CHAPTER 6 MOCKING DAY

As Nate watched his wife and mother-in-law walk away, he felt a sense of urgency and anxiety.

With every step, they were moving farther away from him, and he wanted nothing more than to run up to them and clarify the situation, so that the misunderstanding could be stopped right there.

But at the same time, he knew there was no point in going after them, if they had already made up their minds about him.

Most importantly, even if he narrated the whole situation regarding his grandfather and the dark stain of blame on his reputation, that had just been cleared up… what were the chances that they would believe him?

What if they declared him as a crazy liar, just like their relatives had just dismissed his offer for help just some moments ago?

Going to them and making such claims without having any proof in his hands was a recipe for disaster, as it would negatively impact his reputation and their trust in him.

It was at this moment that a sudden idea sparked in his mind. He saw a glimmer of opportunity amidst the chaos, through which he could clarify their misunderstanding and also solve the family's problem in one go.

As the new heir of the family wealth, Nate could easily change the opinions that had defined his relationship with Erica and her family, who viewed him as a penniless loser.

Earlier, his plan was to beg his relatives for the money to help Erica– but now, all that money belonged to him! So, he could easily invest in the McKinney family's company, so his wife wouldn't need to take the harsh decision of marrying anyone else.

In a moment of clarity, Nate pulled out his phone from his pocket, and called Uncle Simon back.

The phone rang, his anxiety rising with each passing second, until finally, a voice answered on the other end.

"My Lord? The phone just connected all of a sudden, is everything alright? I heard some shouts…"

Uncle Simon's concerned voice echoed through the receiver. But Nate ignored the questions and jumped straight to the point;

"Yes, I am okay. But where is the nearest branch of our family's company?"

The urgency was evident in his tone, and uncle Simon also seemed to understand it.

Without asking any further questions, he spoke;

"Considering your current location, I believe you can go to the town hall to the investment firm. This company was directly under the old Master's command, and the employees are very loyal to the family."

"Got it, thank you, uncle Simon!"

As Uncle Simon provided Nate with the address, he abruptly ended the call.

Wanting to get the money in his hands as soon as possible, he dashed towards the adjacent garage, his steps propelled by a sense of urgency.

Nate revved the engine of his scooter and tore out of the garage, the wind whipping against his face as he sped towards his destination. And within a few minutes, he saw the impressive facade of his destination in the distance– Bluebell Holdings, the top-ranking company in the city.

After arriving at the prestigious company, Nate expertly parked his scooter in the bustling parking lot.

However, he had barely taken off his helmet when he heard a voice echoing inside the mostly empty garage, calling out his name.

"Nate? Is that really you?!"

Thinking that this was a really strange coincidence, Nate turned around, and there he was – Justin Miller – a reminder of Nate's high school days.

It seemed like Justin had stepped straight out of the 70s in his shiny new SUV, wearing a suit with his hair combed neatly backwards in a retro style. Beside him, stood a girl, who was looking at him with confusion.

This girl looked like the perfect model for the most recent online trends, dressed in a short dress and her face caked in heavy make up and her freshly dyed and straightened hair.

Justin's face had an expression of surprise and happiness adorned as he greeted Nate, extending his hand outwards;

"Hey buddy, fancy seeing you after so long! I would never have expected to see you here of all places!"

Nate smiled politely and shook Justin's hand, saying,

"Justin, am I right? How have you been?"

But Justin seemed to ignore this question as his gaze fell upon Nate's scooter, which stood out in the middle of the sleek cars that populated the parking lot.

With a cutting jab, he seized the opportunity to mock Nate, saying;

"Oh, looks like you are still riding that poor old scooter, huh? I thought you would've upgraded by now."

Justin's smirk widened as he pushed the buttons on his key fob, making the SUV chime loudly as it locked.

"Well, I guess some of us move on to bigger and better things. It must be tough, staying stuck in the past. But hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?"

During their high school days, Nate had been careful to keep his real identity hidden, as he didn't want any of his classmates to judge him based on how wealthy his family was.

So, he mostly kept a low profile without flaunting any wealth or privilege. But he couldn't hide his brilliant mind, and always came at the top of his class, thanks to his excellent grades.

It was this very quality that had fueled Justin's jealousy for all these years. And now, when the roles had apparently reversed, Justin finally found an opportunity to show off his own success.

It seemed like the same envy he had felt in the past had resurfaced in Justin's mind. Nate remained silent, choosing not to react to his mocking remark, but the girl spoke up in her nasal voice.

"Oh, babe! Won't you introduce me to your friend?"

"Ah, right! I almost forgot. Babe, this is Nate, my old high school classmate. And Nate, this is Jessica, my lovely girlfriend."

Nate nodded in Jessica's direction, saying,

"It's nice to meet you, Jessica. Justin, I think we should definitely catch up later, but I have to go now–"

"Ah, yes yes! I must say, I never thought I would see the day you'd be working in a place like this. Did you come here to beg for a job?"

Justin cut him off in the middle and asked with a sarcastic smile. But before Nate could respond, Jessica lightly hit Justin as she laughed;

"Oh, Justin! How many times do I have to tell you, no job is big or small. Why are you asking him that, he can also be very happy at his current job. In fact, it seems like he has come here straight after making some deliveries, isn't that right?"

Jessica looked at Nate, waiting for him to react as she looked at him from head to toe with obvious disgust.

This is when Nate realized that in his hurry to interrupt the family meeting, he had gone to the grand hall in the same dirty set of clothes he was doing laundry in.

After being thrown out of the meeting, he had rushed to the company, without thinking about his clothes at all. And now, he was standing in the parking lot in a stained white t-shirt and sweatpants.

But still, it didn't mean that anyone could mock him or question his dignity. Thinking this, he opened his mouth;

"Excuse me, miss? What do you mean by this, haven't you ever heard of not judging the book by its cover! I am actually–"

"Oh, you are taking her words in the wrong way! My girlfriend was just trying to take your side, buddy."

Justin interrupted Nate once again, taking advantage of the opportunity to blow up his own sense of superiority. Hearing this, his girlfriend also spoke up in a condescending tone;

"Yes, yes! I just mean that we should respect all jobs, you know! If everyone will become like us, then who will do the dirty work like cleaning and making deliveries? And by the way, I really like your little scooter. It's like, such a cute vintage item!"

Of course, Jessica's words were supposed to prove that Nate's place in society was much below theirs. In his heart, Justin was feeling very pleased that Nate had supposedly failed in life, and continued with a smirk;

"I'm just wondering, Nate! Did your wonderful grades only help you secure the job of a delivery man? Meanwhile, I only got average grades but I'm still working as a senior manager in this company. It's so funny how life turns out, isn't it?"
