“Thir…. thirty million?” James stuttered. “Thirty million dollars?”
“Yes. Thirty million dollars.” The opportunity system replied.
“And I don't need to ……. spend it all in three days or anything?” James asked.
“No. It is yours to spend as you wish.”
James stared at the opportunity system and then looked at the floor. Thirty million dollars! That was probably more than all the money he had ever received in his lifetime combined. If he got that amount of money he would never be poor again. He could move his mother from the old slum of a house she was living in. He could give his brother all the help he needed in his business. He would have all the cars and houses he had ever wanted but never had. He would be rich.
“What job do you need me to do?” James asked. His voice was surprisingly calm and clear. His fear had evaporated, replaced by a grim determination.
The opportunity system brought out something from within his cloak and threw it to the ground.
“Pick it up,” he said.
James stooped and picked it up slowly. It was the picture of a man, a tall, black man with a scarred face, gray hair, and a bushy, white beard. In the picture, a cigarette hung from his mouth and he wore a gold chain on his bare chest. He looked strangely familiar. The more James looked at the picture, the more convinced he was that he knew this man. He was not just able to place his finger on where and how he knew him.
“Who is this?” James asked, looking up at the opportunity system. “He looks familiar to me like I know him somewhere…...”
“He is known to many as R.J. Black.” The man replied.
James looked at the photograph again. He had definitely not met anyone named R.J. Black anywhere. Perhaps it was just his imagination.
“What do you want me to do with him?” James asked.
“I want you to tail him.” The opportunity system said.
“Tail him?” James asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Like I should follow him around and stuff?”“Yes. Follow him for three days. After that, tell me everything you have observed about him.”
“That's all? I get to follow a random guy around and I get thirty million as a reward?”
“Exactly.” The opportunity system said. “I need as much information on him as I can get. It is very essential.”
“Where do I find him?” James asked. “I mean…… I don't even know where he stays or anything.”
“Do not worry about that. You will find him.” The opportunity system said.
“How?”
“Don't worry.” The man insisted. “Just trust me, you will find him.”
James was still looking confused, but the opportunity system turned and made for the exit door. James watched as he shuffled towards the door and he could no longer restrain the question that had been bugging him for days.
“Wait!” James shouted and the man halted.
“Yes? Anything else?” The opportunity system asked.
“Just one last question,” James said.
“What is your question?” The opportunity system asked.
“What exactly are you?” James asked.
“I mean, you…….you are not solid. I tried to hit you with a mop earlier but nothing happened. Are you a hologram? Are you a spirit? Or is all this just happening in my head?”The opportunity system looked at James for a few seconds. James imagined he was smiling under that cloak of his.
“Trust me James, the information about my identity is not something you need right now.” The opportunity system said. James could hear the amusement in his voice. It made James slightly annoyed.
“What you need” the opportunity system continued. “ is to concentrate on the task I have given to you.”With that final word, the opportunity system turned and walked out of the room.

James woke up late the next morning to the ringing of his phone. It was Scott, the man he had met at the pub yesterday. James picked up the call.
“Hey, good morning, am I on to James?”
“Yeah,” James said, yawning. “This is James Jackson.”
“Oh sorry, did I disturb your sleep?”
“Never mind,” James said, groggily. “This is Scott, right?”
“Yeah, it's me. I want to know if you'd be available next week on Monday, so we can finalize everything about the shares.”
“Yeah, yeah no problem. Monday's fine.”
“Okay then.”
James cut the call. He stretched and got off the bed. It seemed strange that it was only yesterday he had met Scott at that bar and bought shares worth two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. So much has happened since then.
He turned to walk into the bathroom when he noticed a picture of a tall, black man on his bedside table. James stared at it, feeling a little confused for a moment then he remembered. Of course. The opportunity system had given him a mission yesterday to tail that man.
He picked up the picture and examined it. Once again, that inexplicable feeling that he knew this man before, R.J Black, as the opportunity system had called him.
He put down the picture. He didn't even know where the man was and when he was supposed to start tailing him. The opportunity system had assured him that when the time came, he would know.
He took a bath, dressed up, and took his car key from the bed. He wanted to go to the gym today, to work out. He took the picture the opportunity system had given him from the table and stuffed it in his pocket before walking out of the house.
He got to the gym and got out of the car. He remembered that just around two weeks ago, he had come here to make a delivery. It was here that he met his girlfriend cheated on him with Randy, got into a fight with him and ended up in the hospital with a head concussion.
He walked to the entrance of the gym. As he was about to walk in, another man coming out from the gym bumped into him.
“Sorry,” James said, turning to face the man. The man however said nothing but gave James a contemptuous look and walked away towards the parking lot.
James stood, staring at the man, a little annoyed until something clicked in his brain. He brought out the picture in his pocket and stared at it. He looked up at the man who was now standing beside a black jeep in the parking lot. He looked at the picture again. It was him! R.J black. He had bumped into him.
“Excuse me please.” A voice said, jolting him out of his reverie. He looked up and saw that he was causing a little hold-up at the entrance.“Sorry.” He said and stepped aside for them to pass.He perused the picture again. He had to be sure it was truly R.J. Black and not some random person. He looked at the man again and back at the picture. He was convinced. It was him. Excitedly, all thought of working out now nonexistent in his head, James ran towards his car just as R.J. Black entered the jeep and drove out of the parking lot. James started his car and followed the jeep.James followed the jeep through town for several minutes. He made sure to keep a discreet distance so as not to cause suspicion. The jeep finally stopped in front of a bungalow at the very edge of town. James parked his car in a distance. He didn't know whether to get out of the car and try to sneak towards the house. Before he could decide, R.J black was walking back outside again, this time, he was flanked by
James stood up quietly, “please don't kill me” James fearfully voiced out, it was more of a whisper, he shrieked in fear and obeyed them. He was not ready to lose his life, at least not yet.Who are these people, and what do they want from him? He thought and looked for a way to engage them. That should be the wisest thing for now.“Follow us like a little puppy nigga” one of the men said and pushed him aggressively from behind. “Please I… I will give you anything you want, just spare me” James shakenly. James started hoping to get a reply from them so he could engage them further. They ignored him, James was sweating profusely. His life has not known peace since he met the opportunity system. Now he is left alone to face this mess. “Please I can…” “Enough!!” One of the men shouted at James. James shrieked. “Do you know what we want from you?” The man continued. They led him into a black SUV car and zoomed off. “We don't want much from you, Just Thirty million Dollars” another man
James' heart raced at a 50 km/hr rate. "Not again," he exclaimed aloud, uncertain whether he should feel happy or sad. Did someone just go back in time? Fear gripped James; he didn't want to be attacked again."Well, aren't we having a rollercoaster of emotions today?” a voice behind him remarked. He abruptly turned, his hand clenched into a fist in an attempt to defend himself."Whoa, easy dude, you don't want to beat me up, do you?" the voice said. James stood there, seething with anger. "Please, leave me alone; I've not been happy since I met you. What do you want from me?""C'mon, you can't be serious now. I've made you thirty million dollars richer. That's why I'm called the opportunity system.""Well, if I had a dollar for every time you gave me a heart attack, we'd be even.” James hummed."Do you know I was almost killed because of your thirty million dollars?" James barked. "You've caused me more harm than good.”"Who are you really?" James said, his tone laced with confusion.
James now settled down in a restaurant. Although he wanted to hear what the Opportunity System, Jasper or whatever he called himself, had to say but, he was famished. His stomach growled at each second he waited for the waiter to bring his order. His order of assorted desserts adorned with edible gold leaf, along with chocolate truffles, macarons, and a gold-flecked cheesecake arrived. "It's payment on delivery," the waiter rudely said to him.James could sense that she didn't believe he could afford that expensive meal. James was getting impatient and irate. His stomach growled further. "How much is my bill?" James asked impatiently.“Fifteen thousand dollars, sire,” she said nonchalantly and stretched the payment device for him to input his PIN. "Edible gold, huh? I hope it comes with a money-back guarantee."James said as he smiled at her after he input his pin. His smile welcomed the surprise written all over her face. “Welcome to the Royal Bliss Suite,” she said apologetically. I
James sat, wondering how full of surprises Jasper was. Richard Sterling was probably the richest man in Los Angeles. How come he had a child no one was aware of? Now he says he needs his help. James entered the room he had earlier booked.Royal Bliss Suite was one of the luxurious suites in Los Angeles. James's room is on the 18th floor of the building. It's the highest subscription for their platinum membership.“You have great taste, hmm,” Jasper acknowledged as he looked around admirably."Well, since we're into ghost meetings, I ought to have picked the right place.”James nodded in satisfaction. He loves how his life is playing out."Ghost meetings deserve a classy backdrop, don't you think? Now, about the help I need…” Jasper said“Yes, tell me, how do I help you?” James asked, facing Jasper, who was seated comfortably.“I was part of a cartel called Frostbite Mafia; I was the second in command, and we were the greatest, strongest gang and the number one dealers of drugs in Mexi
James went straight to the address that Scott had sent him.He pulled over his car at the parking lot. He looked around; the place wasn't bad. He reached out to his phone to call Scott but thought against it.He made his way inside directly to the secretary. “Hello, I'm here to see... Scott.” She looked up at him before asking, “Do you have an appointment with him?”“Yes, I do,” James said in the sweetest way ever. His mind flashed to Selena. He smiled to himself; it had been a long time since he met her.“You can wait there while I inform him, you're…” She gestured, urging me to tell her my name. “James,” I said simply. “Alright, Mr. James, you can wait over there while I inform him,” she told me while pointing to a chair where I could sit. She's professional and smart. That's the best treatment he has gotten in a long while. Not quite long, a man in his late thirties came around, and his demeanor looks bossy. He is the boss in charge, and instantly, his intimidating aura filled ever
James didn't know whether he was alive or not. It was as though he was helplessly trapped in between the thin line that separated life from death and death from life. He could not move but he could feel, he could feel pain, excruciating pain. His brain was pounding in his skull and the whole of his body ached, as though he had been beaten. His heart beat faintly. Even inhaling and exhaling took massive effort from him.He could also not see anything but hear faint, distant, jeering voices mockingly calling his name."....look at him, lying there like a piece of shit……"".....what a loser he is. Definitely doesn't deserve her……"".....she chose me over you for a reason. You are nothing, nothing compared to me……"Those words flitted in and out of his head, leaving no meaning behind. They seemed to bounce and echo around his skull and he could not make it stop. The faint, mocking voices seemed to grow louder and louder until it seemed as though people were beside him, bellowing in his e
James sat up so quickly that the nurse attending to him yelped in fear. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving. He looked around, he was lying in a cozy bed, a drip attached to his hand. The whole place smelled strongly of antiseptic. Of course. He was in the clinic. He looked at the nurse who was staring at him, still looking a little frightened."Who shouted?" He asked her."What?" She said."Who shouted? Someone shouted my name right now.""Nobody shouted your name. It's been only me here." The nurse said."But I heard someone……." His voice trailed off. The nurse was giving him a strange look, as though worried about his mental health."How did I get here? What happened." He asked instead."The guy you had a fight with, uh………""Randy?" I said, my teeth gritted in anger."Yeah, Randy. He knocked you out cold. What were you thinking picking up a fight with a guy like that?" The nurse said, raising an eyebrow.I didn't reply. It was bad enough that I had been humiliated by the gu
