“Excuse me please.” A voice said, jolting him out of his reverie. He looked up and saw that he was causing a little hold-up at the entrance.
“Sorry.” He said and stepped aside for them to pass.
He perused the picture again. He had to be sure it was truly R.J. Black and not some random person. He looked at the man again and back at the picture. He was convinced. It was him. Excitedly, all thought of working out now nonexistent in his head, James ran towards his car just as R.J. Black entered the jeep and drove out of the parking lot. James started his car and followed the jeep.
James followed the jeep through town for several minutes. He made sure to keep a discreet distance so as not to cause suspicion.
The jeep finally stopped in front of a bungalow at the very edge of town. James parked his car in a distance. He didn't know whether to get out of the car and try to sneak towards the house. Before he could decide, R.J black was walking back outside again, this time, he was flanked by two men in dark shades, holding guns and a briefcase.
The black jeep turned and drove off again. James waited two minutes, before turning and following them again.
******************************************
James kept this up for three days, following R.J. Black around. R.J. Black's life seemed like a cycle. From his house to the gym to the supermarket, to the pub, and finally to the mysterious bungalow on the edge of town. James noticed he visited that bungalow twice every day and at specific times. Twelve noon and six in the evening. He never spent long there, always walked out a few minutes later with another briefcase. The men flanking him changed every time he visited that house.
James did not know what to make of all of these but he reckoned the opportunity system knew what all these meant and what to do with the information.
On the night of the third day, James had tailed R.J. back to his house around twelve at midnight. He decided to drive back home. He had hardly had any time for anything else ever since set on this mission.
His phone vibrated beside him and he picked it up. He read the notification slowly. It was a message from his bank. He had been credited thirty million dollars!
James was surprised. The opportunity system had already paid him? He thought it was after he had given him the information he needed that he was going to get paid.
He reckoned the opportunity system had decided to pay him in advance. He got to his house, feeling elated. He felt like whooping with joy. He entered his house and collapsed on his bed. He began to laugh aloud like a madman. Yes, baby! He had done it. Thirty million dollars in his bank account. He was rich baby, he was rich!
“You are in a good mood, I see.” A voice said. James gave a start. He turned and saw the opportunity system standing in the corner.
“Of course I am,” James said grinning. “And I bet you know why.”
The opportunity system didn't say anything to that. He moved closer to James.
“Your three days are up. What did you observe while tailing R.J. Black?” He asked.
“A lot. I observed a lot.” James said, his heart was beating fast in excitement. He explained everything to the opportunity system, from how he had met him at the gym, to following him to a mysterious house at the edge of town and everything he saw. The opportunity system said nothing until James stopped talking.
“You have down well.” The opportunity system said. “You have given me the information I need, thank you. Now about your payment…….”
“Yeah, I've already seen the money you sent into my account.” James interrupted, grinning happily.
The opportunity system paused for a minute before speaking.
“What money?”
“The thirty million dollars,” James said, raising an eyebrow. “You just sent it to me a few minutes ago.”
“I didn't.” The opportunity system said. “I said I would pay you after you have my information, didn't I?”
It was beginning to get really confusing for James.
“But…..but……I just received the money and there were no details and…….”
James' voice trailed off. Even though he could not see his face, he could tell the opportunity system was confused as he was.
“If I didn't send the money.” the opportunity system said slowly. “And then you got credited by an unknown source……….Oh no!” He exclaimed suddenly.
Before James could say anything, the opportunity system disappeared into thin air.
James was standing, shocked, staring at the empty space which the hooded had stood mere seconds ago when there was a sudden loud bang on his door. James yelled and crouched on the floor, his hands over his head.
“Who is that?!” He bellowed.
Another bang and his door came crashing down. Five men in black masks ran into the room. Before James knew what was happening, five pistols were pointing at his face.
“Your hands above your head.” One of the men said. “Do not make any funny moves if you do not want us to blow your brain.”
"Please don't kill me," James said amidst fear.
"Not yet, but anything fun will kill you. Move it"
James stood up quietly, “please don't kill me” James fearfully voiced out, it was more of a whisper, he shrieked in fear and obeyed them. He was not ready to lose his life, at least not yet.Who are these people, and what do they want from him? He thought and looked for a way to engage them. That should be the wisest thing for now.“Follow us like a little puppy nigga” one of the men said and pushed him aggressively from behind. “Please I… I will give you anything you want, just spare me” James shakenly. James started hoping to get a reply from them so he could engage them further. They ignored him, James was sweating profusely. His life has not known peace since he met the opportunity system. Now he is left alone to face this mess. “Please I can…” “Enough!!” One of the men shouted at James. James shrieked. “Do you know what we want from you?” The man continued. They led him into a black SUV car and zoomed off. “We don't want much from you, Just Thirty million Dollars” another man
James' heart raced at a 50 km/hr rate. "Not again," he exclaimed aloud, uncertain whether he should feel happy or sad. Did someone just go back in time? Fear gripped James; he didn't want to be attacked again."Well, aren't we having a rollercoaster of emotions today?” a voice behind him remarked. He abruptly turned, his hand clenched into a fist in an attempt to defend himself."Whoa, easy dude, you don't want to beat me up, do you?" the voice said. James stood there, seething with anger. "Please, leave me alone; I've not been happy since I met you. What do you want from me?""C'mon, you can't be serious now. I've made you thirty million dollars richer. That's why I'm called the opportunity system.""Well, if I had a dollar for every time you gave me a heart attack, we'd be even.” James hummed."Do you know I was almost killed because of your thirty million dollars?" James barked. "You've caused me more harm than good.”"Who are you really?" James said, his tone laced with confusion.
James now settled down in a restaurant. Although he wanted to hear what the Opportunity System, Jasper or whatever he called himself, had to say but, he was famished. His stomach growled at each second he waited for the waiter to bring his order. His order of assorted desserts adorned with edible gold leaf, along with chocolate truffles, macarons, and a gold-flecked cheesecake arrived. "It's payment on delivery," the waiter rudely said to him.James could sense that she didn't believe he could afford that expensive meal. James was getting impatient and irate. His stomach growled further. "How much is my bill?" James asked impatiently.“Fifteen thousand dollars, sire,” she said nonchalantly and stretched the payment device for him to input his PIN. "Edible gold, huh? I hope it comes with a money-back guarantee."James said as he smiled at her after he input his pin. His smile welcomed the surprise written all over her face. “Welcome to the Royal Bliss Suite,” she said apologetically. I
James sat, wondering how full of surprises Jasper was. Richard Sterling was probably the richest man in Los Angeles. How come he had a child no one was aware of? Now he says he needs his help. James entered the room he had earlier booked.Royal Bliss Suite was one of the luxurious suites in Los Angeles. James's room is on the 18th floor of the building. It's the highest subscription for their platinum membership.“You have great taste, hmm,” Jasper acknowledged as he looked around admirably."Well, since we're into ghost meetings, I ought to have picked the right place.”James nodded in satisfaction. He loves how his life is playing out."Ghost meetings deserve a classy backdrop, don't you think? Now, about the help I need…” Jasper said“Yes, tell me, how do I help you?” James asked, facing Jasper, who was seated comfortably.“I was part of a cartel called Frostbite Mafia; I was the second in command, and we were the greatest, strongest gang and the number one dealers of drugs in Mexi
James went straight to the address that Scott had sent him.He pulled over his car at the parking lot. He looked around; the place wasn't bad. He reached out to his phone to call Scott but thought against it.He made his way inside directly to the secretary. “Hello, I'm here to see... Scott.” She looked up at him before asking, “Do you have an appointment with him?”“Yes, I do,” James said in the sweetest way ever. His mind flashed to Selena. He smiled to himself; it had been a long time since he met her.“You can wait there while I inform him, you're…” She gestured, urging me to tell her my name. “James,” I said simply. “Alright, Mr. James, you can wait over there while I inform him,” she told me while pointing to a chair where I could sit. She's professional and smart. That's the best treatment he has gotten in a long while. Not quite long, a man in his late thirties came around, and his demeanor looks bossy. He is the boss in charge, and instantly, his intimidating aura filled ever
James didn't know whether he was alive or not. It was as though he was helplessly trapped in between the thin line that separated life from death and death from life. He could not move but he could feel, he could feel pain, excruciating pain. His brain was pounding in his skull and the whole of his body ached, as though he had been beaten. His heart beat faintly. Even inhaling and exhaling took massive effort from him.He could also not see anything but hear faint, distant, jeering voices mockingly calling his name."....look at him, lying there like a piece of shit……"".....what a loser he is. Definitely doesn't deserve her……"".....she chose me over you for a reason. You are nothing, nothing compared to me……"Those words flitted in and out of his head, leaving no meaning behind. They seemed to bounce and echo around his skull and he could not make it stop. The faint, mocking voices seemed to grow louder and louder until it seemed as though people were beside him, bellowing in his e
James sat up so quickly that the nurse attending to him yelped in fear. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving. He looked around, he was lying in a cozy bed, a drip attached to his hand. The whole place smelled strongly of antiseptic. Of course. He was in the clinic. He looked at the nurse who was staring at him, still looking a little frightened."Who shouted?" He asked her."What?" She said."Who shouted? Someone shouted my name right now.""Nobody shouted your name. It's been only me here." The nurse said."But I heard someone……." His voice trailed off. The nurse was giving him a strange look, as though worried about his mental health."How did I get here? What happened." He asked instead."The guy you had a fight with, uh………""Randy?" I said, my teeth gritted in anger."Yeah, Randy. He knocked you out cold. What were you thinking picking up a fight with a guy like that?" The nurse said, raising an eyebrow.I didn't reply. It was bad enough that I had been humiliated by the gu
James trudged home slowly, still clutching his letter of suspension in his hands. He didn't think he had ever felt this heartbroken before. Nothing he had ever experienced compared to this level of sadness. He had his future in his hands but he had thrown it away. He had the opportunity to finally make something of himself but he had been too dumb, too stupid. He had come from a poor family, a broken home. His parents had gotten divorced when he was just four years old. His father never paid child support so his mother had to grind it hard, working three jobs just to make ends meet. Now, just when things seemed to finally be looking up for him; he got a scholarship into one of the biggest schools in the country, he got a job, he got a girlfriend, he had blown it all in one stupid move. He had blown it!If only he could have reversed time he wouldn't have. He would have not confronted Randy. He would have just left him to kiss and grope his girlfriend in peace. Now he had lost everyth
