Chapter 1

On a cold winter night, Jake had returned from the little company where he worked. Little drops of sweat broke out on his forehead as he stepped into the house panting hard from exaggeration.

“Honey," he called, but there was dead silence in the sitting room. On his left hand was a beautiful red flower he had gotten on his way home.

Today marks his 3rd marriage anniversary, and he has returned late already. As he walked towards the sofa, a beautiful young lady walked out from the corner. It was Georgina, his beloved wife.

She was the epitome of beauty. Her ebony hair cascaded behind her back like a waterfall of silk. She was tall and endowed with wonderful features.

Her curves were carved out of her tight white dress, exposing her unimaginable beauty. Her striking blue eyes pierced deep into his eyes, and an ugly frown spread across her features.

“Hey baby, I'm back," Jake said with a childish grin on his face.

Staring at him, she shot daggers from her eyes, her gaze filled with so much anger and contempt.

“Yeah, I know,” she replied with a cold, harsh tone. Jake furrowed his brow, expressing his confusion. Before he could say a word, she slammed a brown document on his chest, looking in the other direction.

Jake was dumbfounded as he wondered the reason for the strange behavior.

“What's this?" He asked, but she kept mute. He collected the document, and after reading the front page, he furrowed his brows, a puzzled look crossing his face as he tried to make sense of the situation.

"I don't understand," he said, his voice holding a note of uncertainty. “What is going on? A divorce paper?" He exclaimed. His features contorted with sudden shock.

Their eyes met, and she raised an eyebrow in a quizzical yet disdainful manner, silently questioning his person.

“Don't make this harder than it already is, Jake. Put your pen on paper, let's go our separate ways. You can keep the house as my parting gift to you,” she said with a harsh tone.

Immediately, the entrance door made a squeaking sound and flung open. A woman in her early 50s walked into the scene, rolling her eyes dismissively as she glared at Jake.

She looked way too young to be fifty. She was effortlessly beautiful, despite her age. She had a striking resemblance with Georgina, Jake's wife.

“Good evening, Mom,” Jake greeted politely, and she scoffed. She was Rebecca, his mother-in-law.

“Where are you coming from, and where do you think you're going?” She asked, casting a glare that sent chills down his spine.

He pouted sluggishly, but he was confused about the whole situation. “What's going on?" He asked out of curiosity, and Rebecca chuckled mockingly.

“Are you this dumb? You're getting kicked out of my daughter's house today, young man. Oh you poor boy, you didn't think you would stay here forever, did you? You poor wretched fool!" She yelled, her voice echoing across the house.

“Sign the divorce papers and get the hell out of this house. You better don't keep us waiting,” she continued, and Jake scoffed, expressing his confused state.

"Is this a joke or a prank? How can you hand me a divorce document and ask me to sign it immediately, what's going on?” He protested, his voice calm and humble.

Georgina who had been silent the whole time walked up to him with bitterness in her eyes.

“Don't you get it? We're no longer in the same class, Jake. Look at you, you're broke and useless. Do you know the kind of shame I get to endure when attending an occasion with you?” She yelled.

“For God's sake, Jake. Try to behave maturely for once. You and I know that this day will come. I have dreams, Jake. I'm about to become the manager of C&C Global Company Ltd. What about you? You're just who you're."

Jake stood still in silence, his gaze fixated on her as she spoke. He couldn't help but wonder what had gotten to her.

"So this dream of yours, does it involve you divorcing me? We promised to love each other till the end of time, Georgina. Have you forgotten?” He inquired with appealing eyes, but her mind was set.

“You can no longer be my husband. Please sign the document. If you love me then you would sign it immediately and save my future. I have a bright future and you know it. Don't ruin it for me, I beg of you," she pleaded with a strong gaze of disdain.

Jake was dumbfounded. He couldn't believe that Georgina just said those words to him. Before he could utter another word, Rebecca cut in.

“That's right my darling," she said and turned towards Jake. “You heard her, now sign the document. Aren't you shameless? You can't even make a woman feel happy and relaxed."

"You're supposed to be the provider in the family but tell me, Jake, how does it feel knowing that my daughter is the sole provider?” she mocked, with a glaring gaze of scorn towards him.

“What?"

“Yeah. She feeds you, Jake. She earns way higher than you. All of the family's responsibilities are on her. You're just a parasite sucking from my daughter, but that's enough!”

Hearing those words, Jake bit his lower lip. His rage was visible on his features, but he tried as much as he could to keep himself in control.

If only he could tell them the truth. He had to remain in a low-class work so he could stay hidden from his family.

If being poor would guarantee his love and peaceful union with Georgina, then he would do it over and over again, because she was all that he cared about. He loved her with his life, and he was ready to sacrifice anything just to be with her.

“What?" Rebecca cut in.

“You're getting angry for being told the truth? Well, aren't you useless? Stop lying to yourself, Jake. We both know that if not for my daughter you would have died of starvation.”

“You should bow and worship my daughter when you see her. She's your savior,” Rebecca taunted him, but he ignored her provocative words.

He sighed deeply and turned towards Georgina.

“Listen, babe. Whatever this is, we can settle it. Let's talk things through, ok? We're married, I see no reason why your Mom should instigate you to file a divorce.”

His eyes were filled with so much love and concern as he spoke. He stretched out his hands and took hers, but she pushed him off.

Before he knew it, a deafening slap landed on his cheek. Dreadful silence filled the air. He held his cheek staring at Georgina as she held her right hand out, with burning anger on her features.

Her face was covered in rage, and disdain littered in her eyes.

“How dare you? Don't you get it? We're done, Jake. Don't you ever lay your stupid hands on me again! My goodness! What am I still doing here?” she yelled.

“I have a date with Maron at the Lastanza Hotel. I can't let you destroy my future, so you can remain here. When you're ready, you know what to do,” she said and walked away, leaving him standing in shock.

Jake held his cheek, trying to understand what just happened. Did his wife just slap him in the face? He was shocked to the bone. He couldn't believe it.

When he regained himself, Georgina was gone. He raised his brow and turned to Rebecca.

“Who's Maron?" He asked, and Rebecca scoffed. She rolled her eyes dismissively.

“He is a real man. A man you can never be. Don't bother going after her, Jake. You're a loser, and you can't compete," she said.

Immediately, he ran out of the house, holding onto the flower he had bought earlier.

He hopped on his bike and drove towards the hotel, where Georgina was having her date.
