Chapter 2

“Excuse me, sir, you can't be here. You should either go inside or leave this place at once," a security bouncer said to Jake, as he hid behind the transparent glass, staring at Georgina.

She was having a good time with a young man in his early 30s. The handsome stranger appeared rich and powerful in his black tuxedo suit.

He was Maron, the director of C&C Global Company Ltd. Jake clenched his fist, watching as she laughed heartily at whatever Maron was whispering to her. He couldn't hear them, but he could see them.

A Few months ago, Maron had promised to make Georgina the manager of the company if she agreed to be his wife.

When she confided in her mother, Rebecca had advised her to accept the proposal and divorce Jake who had always been there for her.

“Sir?” the guard tapped Jake on the shoulder, and Jake sighed. To avoid causing a scene, Jake gave in and returned to the entrance.

With a grin on his face, he walked into the hotel but his whole smile disappeared as his eyes fell on an unbelievable scene.

Maron was kissing Georgina passionately, and clearly, she was enjoying every bit of it.

He paused with his eyes wide open. His jaw dropped as he stared at them frozen in shock. The flower he had gotten dropped from his hands and crashed onto the floor.

The glass design on the lower part of the flower shattered, attracting everybody's attention. When Georgina turned around, her eyes met with his.

She chuckled sternly and pulled Maron closer. To push Jake to anger, she intensified the kiss, shattering his already broken heart.

Jake stared at them in disbelief. He couldn't believe it. Even if she wanted a divorce, she could have shown him some respect.

Rage and fear engulfed him as he stared at the perplexing scene unfolding before him.

“You! You dare to do this on the night of our anniversary?" He roared, but Georgina gave him a smirk. His pain was visible on his features, as he glared at her.

“You arrogant bastard!" He roared, shooting spears of terror from his gaze.

Maron chuckled mockingly and pecked Georgina, taunting Jake and pushing him to anger. Just like he wanted, Jake lost his cool. He clenched his fist and bit his lips in agony.

Immediately, he charged further in annoyance, but before he could get close enough, 3 of Maron’s private bouncers rushed forward and pounced on him.

He was determined to get to Maron, but he had been outnumbered.

The hefty men landed heavy punches and kicks on him, while Georgina watched from her seat with fear and terror in her eyes at the same time.

“Stop." She cried out, as guilt bore down on her. She made a move to stop the men, but Maron held her back. He held her chin and turned her around, diverting her attention from Jake's predicament.

“What's wrong baby? Come on. You shouldn't be seen as such a loser. Allow my men to handle him. I'll deal with him when I'm ready," he said to her, and she nodded slowly.

Deep down, she was beginning to feel remorse. Even though she wanted to divorce Jake so badly, she never wished to push him into such a situation. She loved him dearly, but love wasn't enough for her.

She would make the same choice over and over again. Her career was more important, and if divorcing Jake could uplift her career, she wouldn't think about it twice.

After being brutally beaten, Jake was bleeding from his nose. His white dress had been stained with his blood. He collapsed on the floor and lay still unable to help himself up.

Maron signaled the men, and they threw him outside the hotel.

Georgina sat still, watching as everything played out. Her eyes had gone teary, she felt so bad for what she had done, but it was too late.

After lying on the bare floor for a few minutes, Jake groaned painfully and managed to get to his feet. He staggered back home, forgetting his bike at the hotel.

As he entered the house, he collapsed on the ground, panting heavily. Rebecca heard a loud thud on the ground, so she rushed to the sitting room.

When she got there, Jake was lying on the floor with his eyes swollen, and his clothes soaked in blood.

She widened her eyes in shock. “What happened to you?" She asked, her eyes traveling around him in confusion.

After a short silence, she raised her brows as though she had remembered something.

“Oh! Let me guess. You went after my daughter and got your ass beaten by Maron's security men?"

“Oh you poor child, I warned you. You should know your limits and don't get yourself killed,” she stated, followed by a mocking laughter.

Jake felt a rush of anger surging within him. He forced himself up and looked Rebecca in the eyes.

“Mom, does my marriage to Georgina mean anything to you? Why have you ruined our happiness?” He asked with anger and severe pain in his eyes.

She scoffed with a mocking smirk hanging on her lips.

“How is it my fault that you're a jobless joker? How is it my fault that you can't provide my daughter's desires, let alone mine?"

"You're no longer on the same level as my daughter. Do you know what it means to be the manager of C&C Global Company Ltd? Of course you don't. Church rats like you won't even know such a big company exists.”

“All you do in the house is eat and have sex with my daughter. I'm only grateful to God that you didn't leave behind your generational poverty by impregnating my beloved child.”

As she rained insults on him, Jake remained quiet and refused to give her the satisfaction of seeing his pain.

“What will you do now that your source of survival is about to be taken away? I wonder which woman brought such a stupid child into this world,” she cursed, and Jake glared at her.

“All of these, Mom, just because a rich bastard wants to marry your daughter?” He cut in with a weak smile on his face. "How quick of you to forget, Mom."

"After all my sacrifices, you have destroyed the happiness we shared. I hope you get what you are looking for,” he said to her and walked to the sofa.

He picked up the brown document from where he had left it and after staring at the document in silence, he chuckled silently and signed the agreement.

The joy on Rebecca’s face as she watched him sign the divorce was priceless.

“Oh my goodness!” She giggled.

He dropped the document on the table and walked back to the bedroom. In a few minutes, he was out with his bag containing his clothes and shoes.

Without further argument, he made his way for the exit but Rebecca's deafening roar called him back.

“Where do you think you're going? Is that not my daughter's diamond necklace you're wearing?” She asked, her gaze filled with hatred and tyranny.

“How dare you take what belongs to my daughter?" She inquired, but he sighed and turned to walk away.

“Come back here, you thieving bastard! Where do you think you're going?" She roared, holding him in his pants.

“What’s this? Let me go! What's your problem?" He yelled, but she grabbed the necklace and started struggling to snatch it from his neck.

“Stop it, Mom. That's mine. It's not Georgina’s,” he explained but she didn't believe him. After a short struggle, he overpowered her and broke free from her grip.

Immediately, she landed a slap on his cheek. “How dare you talk back to me? Do I look like a kid to you?" She yelled and grabbed the necklace again.

“Mom, stop!" He yelled and held back her hand. Seeing that she couldn't take it from him, she pulled the necklace forcefully from his neck, and it fell on the ground.

The diamond broke into pieces, and Jake froze, staring at the ground in shock.

Rebecca scoffed and shot daggers from her eyes. “What have you done? You just destroyed my daughter's diamond necklace." She claimed, but Jake did not listen to her complaints anymore.

He clenched his fist, as his rage rose beyond his control. The necklace was the only property he had to remind him of his mother. He had given it to Georgina as a gift after their marriage.

As Rebecca came at him again, he didn't let her this time. She tried to slap him, but he was quick to avoid her touch. He returned and slapped her so hard that she fell on the sofa.

She lay on the sofa in shock, unable to process what just happened. She couldn't believe that he laid his hands on her. Because he was always gentle and unproblematic, she didn't see the slap coming.

Her eyes had gone teary. She stared at him in shock and pouted slowly.

“You will pay for this, I promise you," She muttered with a sobbing voice.

He ignored her and put the broken pieces of the necklace into his bag. She watched his back with fear in her eyes as he walked out of the house and slammed the door behind him.

Outside the house, Georgina drove into the compound just as Jake was leaving. Seeing him leaving that lonely night, her shoulders slumped as guilt consumed her from within.

She stepped down from her car and watched his back with so much admiration in her eyes. Immediately, Rebecca came out of the house with the divorce document in her hands.

When their eyes met, Georgina knew it was done. She returned her gaze to Jake, as he walked into the distance.

“What if I'm wrong, Mom? What if I've just made a big mistake? I cannot tell why, but I feel very guilty, Mom,” she said, her voice breaking down at each word.
