**Body Path: stage 1 (Exp): 0/100 Stats: 3% Greater Human**
Riley planned to check his status with the system and visit the orphanage to see if he had been there.
He attempted to sit up quietly to avoid waking the sleeping couple. Unfortunately, he barely dodged Jones's punch aimed at his face. Fury flashed in his friend's eyes. Meanwhile, Maya began to cry softly.
“Dude, let’s keep it down,” Riley said, trying to calm the situation. As a seasoned Body Awakener, he easily evaded Jones's attacks but did not want to escalate things further.
“Relax? How can I relax?” Jones replied, seething with anger. “You played the hero and put yourself in danger! We could have fought together and avoided this mess. If we hadn’t arrived on time, you’d be dead!” After venting, he grabbed a nearby pillow and started hitting it.
“Calm down, man! Why did you have to act like a hero? We could have fought together! If we were just a little late, you would have died!” Jones continued to pound the pillow in frustration.
Riley watched as Jones let out his anger. He felt no regret for his choice, especially after seeing Jones willing to sacrifice himself for them. If they had fought together, Maya would have been hurt first, then Jones. Despite being the weakest, Riley would have come out with fewer injuries. He had to make a choice: sacrifice his friend or risk his own life.
“Did I miss something?” a gruff voice interrupted. Arthur stood at the entrance of the ward, grinning.
Maya managed a small smile and shook her head. “Nothing.”
Riley noticed Arthur. As an Awakener, he sensed Aura more clearly. Arthur’s Aura was stronger than his own. About Arthur’s teammates…
“Even though bad things happened, you did what you set out to do,” Arthur reassured Riley. “My team is fine. We dealt with the stage 1s who got away.”
“No. You saved me. Thank you,” Riley said, bowing slightly. “I’ll repay you someday.”
Arthur just laughed.
“Why did the Bysteds come to the Crypt? Aren’t they supposed to stay in the Abyss?” Jones asked.
Riley glanced at Arthur, sensing he was hiding something about the Bysteds using Cross Tunneling.
“You’re hiding something, aren’t you?” Riley asked seriously.
Arthur chuckled. “You’re sharp. I had my suspicions, but now you’ll find out.”
Maya and Jones looked confused as a man in a black suit entered the room.
He introduced himself as an Inspector from the Crypt Bureau and demanded they sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement or face treason charges.
“What?” Maya exclaimed. “You put my friend's life at risk and now threaten us with treason?”
Jones remained silent, contemplating the situation.
Riley stared at the Inspector. “You’ve done this before. The government wants to prevent panic and keep low-stage Awakeners in check. Crypts are crucial for training. If they shut down, our strength diminishes, which could hurt us in a war with the Bysteds.”
The Inspector raised an eyebrow. “You still have to sign.”
The room grew cold. Maya and Jones shivered, and Riley felt it, too.
Arthur stepped closer to the Inspector and placed a hand on his shoulder, dispelling the cold.
The Inspector appeared unsettled. He recognized Arthur's strength. Hierarchies existed everywhere, even in this situation.
“There’s speculation. In the Crypts where their appearance was recorded, we sent adventure teams. They found nothing. It was as if they vanished without a trace. They had no presence for ten days, and we believed Bysteds had returned to their respective Abysses. Then, out of nowhere, many promising Awakeners who were training for the entrance were killed on the same day. That’s when it hit us. Bysteds figured out a special way to hide in the Crypts.”
As he recalled the moment of realization, the Inspector inhaled deeply. He transitioned from disbelief to denial and finally to acceptance. This truth left him feeling powerless. He looked at the young people who had just escaped death and continued, “Their motives are even scarier. By killing today's geniuses, they are eliminating tomorrow's powerhouses. But not every genius who entered was targeted. They were very specific.
“They are more cunning than we realized. They avoided several traps set by the Bureau. We could do nothing to stop the Bysteds. They cross-tunnel into Crypts at will, conceal their tracks, and strike at the most opportune moments. As a result, officials are increasingly convinced that Crypts are dangerous. The Federation is taking this very seriously.
“There are rumors that Cadets from Raiders Academy will be sent to investigate this situation. We’re hopeful it will be resolved soon, but… don’t venture into any low Crypts until there is closure.”
Arthur remained silent while the Trio nodded. The Inspector left with unnatural steps, leaving behind a heavy atmosphere in the room.
Everyone consciously chose to avoid bringing up the Byssted's plan. Riley felt powerless in front of the power of a whole race. He didn't have any plans to visit the Crypt in the near future, not after this accident.
Even though Crypts were an integral part of an Awakener's combat eExperience, they weren't the only part. There were other locations. 'Raiders Academy… Trish's Academy.' Riley thought, and the images of the strange dream once again flashed in his mind.
"I thought we wouldn't be so unlucky. But who knew," Arthur said as he shot a glance at Jones. Riley and Maya also looked at Jones.
Jones was famous for having good luck, however, his worries mostly came true.
Whether Jones was the source of bad luck or a victim himself, no one was sure.
But he was isolated and finished high school a year early, like Riley.
They met in Astral Grove Training Hall when Jones wanted to learn some basic fighting skills. Due to their own eccentric natures perhaps, Jones and Riley soon became good friends.
Jones's luck seemed to turn around for the better once when he saved a girl his age from hooligans. The girl was Maya and soon they started dating.
Riley looked at Jones who buried his face in his neck and refused to look at them. He sighed in defeat. There was no point in blaming Jones. It was not like he was responsible for the Byssted attack. They were already happening. Plus, if Jones and Maya never came, Riley would've likely died.
"I'll take my leave," Arthur reached the door and paused, "Mr. Bigg asked me to inform you're no longer the Hall's trainer." The door opened, and he left. 'Clever Old Man.' Riley smiled.
Riley sensed that Bigg must have been aware of the Byssted incident, which Explained his urgency that day.Once the incident became public knowledge, Riley would be barred from entering a Crypt, even if he desired to. Hence, Bigg's insistence for Riley to Explore the Crypt before it became too late. This also clarified why Arthur was chosen as Riley's escort, despite initially seeming excessive."You guys need to rest. Actually, take a shower first," Riley directed Jones and Maya away.It had been a day since he was hospitalized, and he was certain they had been in the ward since yesterday. They were beginning smell.Lying back on the bed, Riley glanced at the date. "The Defense Academy entrance is in six days," he realized with a gasp.Riley felt anxious; to gain admission, he needed to reach at least stage 2.Although he was eager to train, the medical AI advised another night's rest for complete healing."I'll visit the orphanage tomorrow and train. But for now...""System!" Riley
Riley dashed through the muddy terrain, feeling like a gust of wind, freer and faster than ever before."Is this what being an Awakener feels like every time?" he pondered, leaping effortlessly to a treetop. With an adventurous smile, he removed his gauntlets and dove headfirst into the ground, channeling his strength into the impact.Dust filled the air as Riley landed, astonished to find his hands unscathed save for a few scratches."I would have surely fractured something before awakening," he mused, slowly adapting to his newfound abilities.Despite not mastering his path's powers, he could already sense the flow of aura transforming into something new within him — chi.Riley felt a surge of power, earning him "+5 Exp" and a sense of satisfaction.Suddenly, a distant sound caught his attention — the growl of murlocs. Equipping his gauntlets with a thought, Riley charged towards them, swiftly dispatching the creatures with deadly precision.Riley got better at fighting after battli
Riley remained hopeful, thinking, "I've progressed halfway through stage 1 in a few days. This is crazy... I might really break into stage 2 and qualify for the Imperial Academy." Despite his astonishment, he credited his rapid improvement to combat and the system.Although talent was believed to be innate and determined one's progression in Immortality, Riley knew there were exceptions. Stories of individuals advancing rapidly, like those who consumed strange fruits in the Deva Ruins, inspired many.Curious about his talents, Riley asked the system, "What did you do to my talents?""Host, before you question about talents. You need to understand how the Immortality work. Let this system show you the truth"The mechanical voice of the system echoed, and Riley felt his consciousness being pulled away until everything went blank. When his awareness returned, Riley found himself in a dark space, devoid of sensation except for his presence. Unable to move his body, he realized he was here
Riley felt like he had solved a puzzle, mentally snapping his fingers in realization."So, these three Aspects—Vital, Dimensional, and Ether—are the fundamentals of everything. They make up me, the universe, and the Immortality. Each Core represents one Aspect, offering Awakeners the means to pursue the powers of these fundamental aspects. The three Avenues allow Awakeners to progress in each of these aspects," he concluded, piecing together the significance of the Immortality and their relationship to the fundamental aspects.Riley's hover bike dashed through the skyways. It passed through the floating complexes, patrolling airships, and reached a quiet district. It had no floating buildings and only a few skyscrapers. The hover bike descended and Riley stopped before the familiar building. The old-fashioned LED nameplate of the orphanage greeted him as he entered the orphanage. The front yard was a playground with with a park."Hey! Catch the bluebird!""Catch the green one!""Dodge
Riley confirmed his conjecture, but he still had questions he couldn't answer. But one thing was clear. Even though he didn't have any memory of her — Trish was real. And whatever predicament she was in, he needed to save her.The Sun was setting, marking the end of the month.Riley returned home and spent the next 5 days visiting the murloc islands. He spent all fighting the stage 1s and mastered his Awakner powers. But to his utter dismay, his progress bar never moved. It stayed stubborn at:"Body Path stage 1: 50/100"On 4th, Septa, Riley woke up earlier than usual.'Today is the day. I must make it!' He looked at himself in the mirror. 'I only got one shot to find Trish. Next year, I'll be 19 and I can't take the test.''I can do it!' Riley cheered himself. How successful it was, he didn't know.He reached the Starfish Spaceport. It was crowded with hover bikes and hover cars. Swarms of youngsters entered through the six entrances of the vast spaceport.Starfish was one of the fin
"Riley!" Jones shouted, waving and rushing over to him. Riley was stunned as Jones approached him, and then..."What are you doing here?" they both exclaimed simultaneously.Riley glared at his friend. "You're supposed to be heading to the Military Science Academy. So why are you in the Abyss? You're not a fighter!"Jones glared back just as fiercely. "And you never mentioned going to Defense Academies. Are you crazy? You need to be at least stage 2 to survive in there! You're only stage 1. They'll tear you apart."They stared at each other for a moment before sighing in unison."I don't get it. The Management is insane," Jones confessed anxiously. "We, the science academy candidates, had a test. Those who passed got tossed into the Abyss. If we 'survive,' they'll accept us. We'll spend our lives in labs. Why put us through this Abyss nonsense?"Riley patted Jones's shoulder reassuringly. "Just steer clear of the city. There are villages nearby."Feeling conflicted, Riley admitted, "I
Riley stood in the center of the Astral Grove Training Hall. The crowd had gathered around, watching him closely. His opponent, a young Body Awakener, smirked as he stretched, showing off his enhanced muscles.“You sure you want to go through with this?” the Awakener asked. “You’re unawakened. This won’t end well for you.”Riley ignored the taunt, his eyes focused on the Awakener’s stance. “We’ll see,” he replied calmly. The bell rang, signaling the start of the duel. The Awakener charged forward, his speed impressive. Riley sidestepped the first punch with ease, causing the crowd to murmur.“That’s all you got?” the Awakener taunted again, swinging another fist toward Riley’s face.Riley ducked and spun, sweeping his opponent’s legs from under him. The Awakener stumbled but didn’t fall.“You’re quick,” the Awakener admitted, his grin fading. “But speed won’t save you.”Riley didn’t respond. He stayed light on his feet, waiting for the next move. The Awakener rushed in again, throwing
Riley stood in his room, surrounded by training equipment. Sweat dripped down his face as he struggled to focus. The challenge of awakening felt heavier than ever.Suddenly, he noticed his dragon bracelet glowing. **What now?** he thought, irritated. He tapped the bracelet, and a voice filled the air."Welcome to the Immortality System."Riley froze, his heart racing. "What are you talking about?" he asked."I prevented you from awakening for 18 years," the voice continued calmly. "It was a test."His anger boiled over. "A test? You’ve got to be kidding me!" Riley shouted. "You let my mother die because you wanted to test me?""Your growth was necessary," the system replied, sounding unbothered.Riley clenched his fists, his mind racing. "You think this is some kind of game? I could have saved her! I could have saved her if you had just let me awaken!"The voice remained silent, and that only made Riley angrier. He looked down at the bracelet, its glow now mocking him. Without thinkin
