Chapter 1

Margaret glared disapprovingly at the young man in front of her. Her face was rigid, as if there were many unpleasant things she wanted to say.

"Where are you off to so early in the morning?" Margaret asked.

"I'm looking for a job, Mom," the young man replied.

The old woman smirked mockingly. "A job? What can you do? No one wants to hire you. And even if they do, it might just be as a labourer," she sneered.

"Oh, come on, Mom! Didn't Mommy want Adam to work?" It wasn't Adam's voice, but Laura's—Adam's wife. Laura's sudden appearance shifted her mother’s attention to her.

"What kind of job can your husband do, Laura?" Margaret asked with a scornful look. "Look at him... his bulging belly. That's because he never moves. He just eats and sleeps every day. Instead of working, he's just going to bring shame to our family!"

Of course, what Margaret said about her son-in-law was a lie she made up. Adam's body was lean, with not much fat on him. They had treated Adam like a servant all this time. Even Laura had never treated her husband well.

Harsh words had become Adam's daily bread. However, the man couldn't do anything. Adam could only hold back his frustration and anger inside.

As her husband was being insulted, Laura seemed indifferent. Being married to Adam was truly a disaster. She initially thought Adam was a wealthy man, but in reality, he had nothing.

"I'll head off now, Mom," Laura excused herself, leaving Adam, who might still face more insults from Margaret. As an only child, albeit young, Laura was already entrusted with an important position in the family company. Every day, she would leave in the morning and return late at night.

Margaret's gaze followed Laura's back until she was out of sight, then she turned her attention back to Adam.

"A useless, poor son-in-law! You should just die!" After uttering these harsh words, Margaret walked away, leaving Adam clenching his fists in anger.

Adam wanted to leave the Smith family, but felt indebted. So, he had to endure until the Smith family cast him out. Adam took deep breaths to calm himself. Then, he started walking out of the grand but hellish residence.

It had been two years since Adam became a son-in-law in the Smith family, and for two years, he hadn't worked. He couldn't understand why, if the family didn't like him, they made him their son-in-law?

Although Adam didn't work, he did almost all the tasks that male servants usually did. Margaret even intentionally fired the two gardeners who used to work for the family and burdened Adam with their tasks. Adam never complained out loud; he did it all as a sense of responsibility towards his wife. He considered it his job, and the earnings were for providing for Laura.

While walking on the sidewalk, Adam remembered his conversation with Laura the night before.

"I will look for a job." Laura, who was removing her makeup, turned to look at Adam sitting on the edge of the bed.

"What kind of job can you do? You don't have any skills other than gardening," Laura said, disrespecting Adam as usual. She always spoke with a condescending tone.

"I will do any job as long as I can provide for you!" Adam asserted. He was tired of being constantly insulted by his in-laws, who kept saying he was just a freeloader.

Laura scoffed with a smirk on her lips. "How much can you provide? I bet not more than my daily allowance." Laura turned back to her vanity table, resuming her interrupted activity due to being surprised by Adam's statement.

With his head bowed and eyes fixed on the tips of his toes, his body stiff from clenching his fists tightly, Adam was angry, but he couldn't let it out.

"What...," His voice was hoarse with restrained anger. Laura turned back to her husband to hear what he would say next. "...can't you respect me for once, Laura?" Even Adam's jaw didn't move as he spoke. He was desperately holding back his anger.

Instead of reflecting on her behaviour all this time, Laura made another hurtful remark. "You have nothing that could make me respect you! That's it!" Laura, done with cleaning her face, went to bed. "I'm going to sleep! It's up to you tomorrow! If you want to find a job, I won't stop you!"

Laura lay down with her back to Adam. She never cared about how Adam felt. Without power or wealth, Adam had no right to refuse or object to anything.

Adam groaned as he kicked a soda can in front of him. How long would he endure this humiliation and insults?

"HEY! ARE YOU CRAZY, HUH?"

Adam looked up when he heard a shout directed at him. He rolled his eyes in annoyance upon seeing the man walking towards him.

"Well...! Is it a coincidence to meet, Poor Adam Davis?" The man jeered as he circled Adam.

"I have no business with you, Travis!" Adam said lazily. He wanted to avoid the man by walking around him, but Travis blocked his way again.

"Don't be a coward, Adam! What? You want to run away?" Travis's lip curled in a sneer, his gaze still mocking.

Adam sighed heavily. "I don't have time for you! Move aside!" Adam boldly pushed Travis with his arm so he could step back.

Feeling humiliated that the poor Adam dared to pass him, Travis quickly turned around and grabbed Adam's arm. Travis immediately punched Adam in the face, causing him to fall to the ground on the sidewalk.

Adam felt a metallic taste on the corner of his mouth. He wiped the corner of his mouth with his hand, revealing fresh blood.

Travis grinned satisfactorily as he saw Adam's handsome face slightly bruised. He spat beside Adam.

"Stay there! Don't forget that!" Travis walked away, but before leaving, he approached Adam and stepped on his fingers, making Adam cry out in pain. After satisfying himself, Travis left just like that. He got into his luxurious car and sped off.

Adam, seething with anger, could only pound the pavement several times. He wanted to cry, but he remembered he was a man. After a while, he resumed his steps to find a job.

Travis Lloyd had been chasing Laura for a long time, but she rejected him and married Adam instead. Of course, this made Travis resentful for losing to a poor man of unclear background.

The Smith family actually preferred Laura to be with Travis, but for some reason, she chose to marry Adam instead. Adam stopped momentarily. His hands clenched, eyes shut tight. He raised his head slightly and let out a loud scream. Fortunately, the street was deserted, so no one paid attention to him.

For a moment, Adam felt despair about his fate. Why did destiny seem to be against him? After venting his frustration, he opened his eyes again. Adam regulated his breathing, which had been irregular due to overflowing emotions.

"I have to find a job! At least I can leave the Smith family's home." Adam regained his enthusiasm. Standing by the roadside, he looked left and right, ready to cross.

After ensuring the road was clear, Adam stepped forward. Inside, there was a strong determination to get a job. Until now, he had been like a frog in a well, just following what the Smith family told him.

But it seemed that ill fate continued to follow Adam. Just a few steps into the road, a car was speeding towards him. Adam didn't have time to dodge, and he ended up being hit and thrown to the ground as the car collided with his body.
