Cade sat in his living room after returning to his penthouse later that night, remembering all that went on over at his mom's. She had cried when he was about to leave and though it broke his heart, he just couldn't ruin their plans by staying with her. Cade looked at the cheque again. He could not believe his eyes. But the cheque had not been cashed either, and that was why the slip was still here. Cade went through the file again, hoping to find something else that would make him understand the context of everything, but all he could see were work records. There wasn’t anything else that would be incriminating enough to be considered evidence against Alex. He could not bring himself to look at the work records properly because of how surprised he was to see the cheque. Cade woke up very early the next day. He had gotten enough sleep from last night, and had a lot to do today. He sat up on his bed with his back propped up against his pillow and in his head, he began to enumerate his activities for the day. He would call Gale as soon as he came back from the gym which was his first agenda on the list, then he would have to wait for the records to be provided by Gale. That was pretty much all he had to do today and tomorrow and the next days to come till he was done looking into the records, then all he would be doing is regaining his physique. He ate slowly now, trying to force the food down his throat because though he was still hungry, his appetite was messed up by his suspicions. It was the end of the week and Cade was almost done looking into the records that Gale brought from the company. The file was large, but not as enormous as he had expected since Milton Conglomerate had a lot of employees. Gale had gone through the trouble of editing the files to include only the most important details so it wouldn’t be too bulky. It took him the last three days of the week to finish looking into them all. He found some loopholes, but they were mainly just due to laxity and carelessness. In most of the departments' records, he found that the staff were quite underpaid and he attributed that to either the loss of money due to the lawsuits in the past or negligence on the part of the human resource manager. While the pay was still quite high, he could see that it reduced as the years passed. He would have to do something about that. Just as Cade had expected, Gale was furious when he learnt that Cade had spent the night at his mother’s place. They still weren’t sure if Alex and his mother had spies among the Milton mansion’s staff. Gale was still in the process of vetting them all which was why Cade always had to come disguised even for a brief meeting with his mother. And spending the night with her was dangerous, it would be very suspicious for a delivery guy to stay over and not leave till the next morning. But they thought of a solution. Cade’s mother had to pretend like he was sick and so she cared for him throughout the night instead of sending him home where he lived alone. With his blonde disguise, no one would ever guess that it was really her son and not a delivery person. Gale had told him the exact date that Alex was supposed to be announced CEO.
