THE DIVORCE

The rain was pouring heavily at this part of Brooklyn with people running left and right, trying to dodge from its splashes. Others had umbrellas with them but still went to a corner to avoid the cold.

Nicholas however, had a target and he was almost done. Delivering goods for people was his part-time job and he was nearly done for that day.

"I'm so drenched and tired," he muttered to himself as he brought the motorcycle's engine dead and stepped down.

A huge man in a gruff voice was the last customer and he quickly brought out his package. The man was in front of a hotel.

"Hello sir, here's your package." He said to the man, handing him a brown cartoon.

"Look at you fool! It's raining heavily and you still wet all my goods!" He yelled at Nicholas.

"Sir, I'm sorry but the box isn't ruined at all. I've kept it inside the rain proof bag." He was showing the man the bag but he tore it to pieces and stepped on it.

"How dare a low delivery man like you speak back to me! I will report you to your boss and make him fire you at once!" The man said.

Nicholas really hoped he wouldn't do that, so he quickly added. "Please sir, I am sorry, it will never happen again."

That man was Bob Fisher, one of the big staff at Graham's enterprise, the biggest real-estate company. Anyone working at the Grahams company, even as a cleaner was as proud as a peacock. And he heard Bob was a sales manager there.

So this is why Nicholas must never make him angry!

"Well, because I am kind, I want you to clean my shoes now, with your filthy hands." The man commanded.

Nicholas looked stunned, but he shook his head and knelt to clean the shoe. The man kicked him and Nicholas fell to the floor, groaning in pain.

"A filthy rat like you cannot touch me, else you'll be rubbing off your poverty on me. Now get lost before I change my mind!" The man barked out.

Dustin quickly went back to work to get his payment, ignoring his boss cold attitude towards him as he demanded his money and

hurried to the jewellery store.

"Finally, you've done it, Nick." He muttered to himself. He had been meaning to get her a gift for months now after her promotion at her work place. Now, his combined money would be enough to get her a fancy jewellery, even if it won't be as expensive as others could afford.

Caressing the necklace like a magical ornament, he hurried home. He began to guess so many ways that his wife, Maya, would be happy. His thoughts were rubbed off when he noticed an expensive looking vehicle parked in front of their house.

His brows furrowed, "what is this?" He said to himself. "Maya, didn't we expect any guests tonight?"

He went ahead and opened the door. Nobody was in the living room so he was beginning to doubt whether that car had been meant for any guest of Maya' when suddenly, he could see a man's show by the entrance, right next to Maya's.

He frowned. "Who's shoe could thus be for? Maya rarely has any guests over."

Then, he heard muffled giggling and chattering. That was his wife's voice, but with someone else's.

He realized the voices were coming from their matrimonial bedroom and headed straight there. By the entrance, he hesitated for a minute. The door was partly open so he could hear their voices loudly now.

The necklace in his hand dropped to the floor as he stood in shock, but they didn't seem to have noticed.

"I can't wait till you divorce that filthy husband of yours. He irritates me every time!" Said the visitor's voice, a very familiar voice that made Nicholas shivered.

"Oh baby, I promise to divorce him just soon. Nicholas is nothing compared to you. You know that, right?" His wife, his own Maya said.

"Now, take me back to fantasy land. I love what you do to me, sweet Maya." He said and that was even when Nicholas bursted in.

Maya's eyes fell on him with shock, and so did that man. That man was none other than Bob Fisher.

Nicholas didn't know whether to be crying or not. "Maya, what is going on here? I demand an explanation!"

At first, his wife looked shocked and almost as if pained. But now, every guilt in her face had disappeared in an instant.

"Nicholas? What are you doing home so early? I thought you wouldn't be back until after a few hours." She said to him,

Nicholas' palm was a fist of rage. "So you could have more time to spend with this filthy man?" He yelled out.

"What in the world is going on here! I will not stand it, my love. Send him out now!" Bob Fisher said angrily.

Nicholas' blood was boiling hot now as he dashed forward and grabbed Bob Fisher by the collar of his shirt.

Maya gasped and tried to stop him but Nicholas was stronger. "You bastard! How dare you try to sleep with my wife! You will pay for this!"

"Nicholas, stop this madness at once! Stop it," she tried and finally managed to get his attention again. "Stop this madness. Are you trying to ruin me!" Cold eyes flickered at him.

Nicholas pulled free and the man could breath fine again, but Nicholas' eyes were fixed on his wife. "Would you dare support this creep more than your husband?"

Maya rolled her eyes. “Oh Nicholas, stop pretending like you don't know who he is! He is Bob Fisher, and now he is the CEO of Willos Group, a new company under Grahams Enterprise."

"So, it's enough reason to bring him home to our matrimonial bedroom and humiliate your husband?"

"Stop talking like a kid, Nicholas. With his influence, don't you know how powerful I can grow? Compared to you, he can offer me a whole lot more." She said, the words managing to roll off her tongue with so much ease.

"I am now angry, Maya. How can you let this poor thing humiliate me?" It was Bob Fisher's turn to talk now.

"My love, please do not be angry!" Maya quickly said,"I beg you, just give me a moment to speak to him alone." She said and the man grumbled a reply, then she kissed him.

"Come, Nicholas." She ordered, and like a fool, hia feet dragged him along. They were in the living room now, close to the entrance when she spilled out, "you should have called, you would be coming home early."

"Stop saying that. I am your husband and I came home early because I wanted to surprise you with a gift." He said and that made Maya snort.

"You wanted to get me a gift? What? Lemme' guess, some cheap jewellery from that poor people store? Nicholas, Bob promised me a car! Can you believe that?" She looked so excited as she spoke.

Nicholas' heart sank to its lowest as he recalled all the stress he had to go through before he was able to get her that gift that she had not even bothered to appreciate.

"Maya, I am your husband and you owe me an apology. This is you cheating on me, don't you see?"

"I don't owe you anything Nicholas, nothing but maybe a divorce. You need to realise that you're nothing but a delivery man and you have no net-worth at all, maybe beyond hundred dollars! If you even still have up to that after your cheap gift."

Nicholas realized that it was over now. If that's what she thought of him all this while, then it was only right to let her go.

"I hope you'll be happy." He said to her and she smiled.

"Oh don't worry, I'll be happy alright. And let's get this divorce over with. I'll send you the papers soon."
