Sly moved around the banquet halls bored out of his mind. He already had his talk with Hunter Windstorme. Nothing out of the usual ‘we can make this city a better place,’ that elated Emily more than he could understand.

This wasn’t a space he fit in particularly well. He would rather gather together with warriors and talk strategies than huddle up and gorge about the economics of the land.

Most of them, he was sure, were people that created problems just so they could solve and eventually enrichen themselves. It was a game he would get angry if he played…and so he avoided it…for the sake of Emily.

As he moved, he caught sight of Katherine fending off an old man that seemed to be insistent on talking to her in whispers.

“Katherine, dear…come over,” he said loud enough for the man to hear.

Katherine rolled her eyes in relief and gave the old man a light push away, making him sneer at both her and Sly.

“Thank you, Sir. You don’t know what you just saved me from,” Katherine dusted her d

“Well, that was a disaster,” Emily collapsed on the bed when they arrived back home. “And don’t you dare give me the ‘I told you so’ lecture,” she warned her husband. “I’ll cry if you do,” she mumbled the last part.Sly chuckled. “I’m honestly just grateful you weren’t hurt through all this chaos. That’s something that would have killed me,”She took steady breaths for a bit, hearing his voice and allowing it soothe her before she admitted, “You were right,” she hummed. “We shouldn’t have gone,”“Ha! And then we’d have missed Mr. Round-butt!” Sylvester reminded her about the man they were making fun of, and the image of his weirdly round, jiggling butt probably from his abnormal diet, sparks a bubbling laughter in her.She could sleep easy now, knowing that Sly wasn’t angry at her.But even then, beneath the entire surface, she still had a lot of questions on her mind. He stepped in and put his life in front of her own multiple times. She thought about when they were driving to the e

As soon as Emily left, Sylvester stared at the door for a few minutes, a smile plastered on his face before remembering that he had a cultivation journey to begin. She had cleared the breakfast table, so he had nothing to do other than setting himself up for cultivation, which he did.It was only after a few hours of cultivating and drawing powers from ye and sunder that he remembered he left someone hanging.“Katherine!” he said with a gasp as his eyes shot open in remembrance of the call he put on hold.Scrambling to his feet, he half-sprinted into the living room to get his phone and dial the number. Katherine answered on the first ring.“Must’ve been a big breakfast,” she muttered sarcastically. “I’m sorry. I got lost and started cultivating without getting back to you. How are you?” he asked. Katherine fought beside him as well yesterday. It was only fair to inquire about her welfare.“Annoyed. There’s a man here that won’t keep insisting on a 15% discount when the most we give

Days passed, and Sylvester busied himself with the art of cultivation. He tried to do his best to make sure he was meeting his daily quota, but even then, he felt like his advancements were too little. He needed a boot, and the stones he asked Katherine to research about…he needed info on them and how to unlock their powers. He was sure that if used properly, they would be of good use to him.As soon as Emily left the house, in his usual manner, he began his cultivation, and was well enough into it, that when the doorbell rang, he didn’t feel agitated for being interrupted. He needed that break anyways.“Katherine,” he exclaimed wide-eyed when he saw his student as he opened the door. She had that beautiful signature smile on her face and her brown eyes radiated the admiration she felt for him. “You could have called,” he challenged, but let her inside.“I thought it’d be best to see you personally to report my findings,” she said simply.Well, depending on the information she had to

Emily slept a little hurt, but all the more confused. A lot of questions pulsed through her mind, but they were questions that she could not ask. They didn’t make sense to ask at this time in their relationship. Were they close enough to? She didn’t feel like they were.So why did she feel the stir of jealousy and the pang of betrayal stir inside her?Something was definitely going on between her husband and that woman that consistently calls him, “Boss”.Who was she? Another one of those ex-students of his?She helped her in the party, though…that was for sure. But was she coming to take her dues by sleeping with her husband? She was sure that Sylvester did not allow it, but how could she be certain. What if they were about to do something, but quickly disbanded when they heard her come in? A lot of unholy thoughts pooled into her mind, and she slept on them, bringing her into a sour mood when she woke up the next morning.Even then, Sylvester was nowhere to be found.Odd. He someti

Sylvester hadn’t called her yet, but she didn’t want to spend time with her mother any longer. Every moment between them nowadays was so tense. It was the same before Sylvester gained his ability to walk, but before, she was forced to bear it, because in some way, it was better than the tension between her and Sylvester. When faced with two evils, you go for the lesser. Now, things between her and Sylvester weren’t perfect, but it was incomparable to the tension between her and her mother. She and Isabella were a chasm apart when it came to ideologies, but because of the common predicament they shared – a crippled Sly, they had to put their differences aside. Now, there was no reason for them to.It turned out that she didn’t have to wait long, as barely a minute after she stepped out of the office, contemplating going to a nearby café to wait for her husband, she spotted him strolling to the venue.Yes, they shared one car which she took, so seeing him walk didn’t give her any sort o

Katherine wasn’t going to go out just like that. She had fantasized this moment right down to the very moment that she and Sly would share their first kiss. She had thought about how he would hold her in his arms, and how the both of them would ride each other into blissful orgasms. The spot Emily was on was hers. Undoubtedly. She had served Sylvester for years as his student, and all this while, she had tried to still her emotions for him. She had tried desperately to wait until the time was right. The time was right now…and he was with someone else? No.The thought of seeing Emily smile because of Sylvester took away her own smile. She couldn’t bear it. Emily didn’t deserve the warlord. She did. Katherine. Emily woke up and did her usual routine – making and having breakfast with her husband, prepping for work and leaving the house. And then, the feeling got her again. She had been having this crippling anxiety for a while now – like someone was watching her. Ever since the whole event with the “Children of Azraloth” as Sly had told her, there always seemed to be an eye on her.She dismissed it, though, maybe she was just being paranoid. But even when she got into her car and tried to drive, she felt like she was not the only one that had been in the car.‘Yeah, of course. You have a husband,’ an inner voice chided her skepticism and she tried to relax for a little bit.Maybe she was just overthinking the entire thing. She got to work, and tried to settle into it, but those damned eyes…they wouldn’t let her work. She went over to her window and stared down at the moving city below.People of all walks of life moved, almost as if they couldn’t wait to get to where they were going. Sylvester was at home trying to master his cultivation when a sharp pang hit him in the chest, jolting him brutally out of his state of meditation.Something was wrong. He immediately got up and phoned the office, but when he did that, everything seemed to be fine on their end. He paced the living room for a while, hoping that his quest for quick power-up hadn’t disrupted something. He wanted to call Katherine and ask after her wellbeing, because after all, she was his student. If something were to happen to her, he would feel responsible, especially since he felt the sensation. But he didn’t know if he wanted to. His quarrel with her was still fresh in his mind, and he didn’t think he wanted to face her yet, especially if he eventually called her and everything was fine on her end.Hence, he called Geral and told him to check on Katherine for him.Geral agreed without hesitation and he wanted to go back into meditation, but something was still wrong. He still felt disturbed. And she was supposed to review it. Her attorney said she must. That’s when the calls started coming in.At first, she ignored it, assuming it was just another work-related message. If she had to respond to another idiot telling them to go ahead with what she had already given the go-ahead for days ago, she’d lose her mind. But then it buzzed again. And again. With a sigh, she pulled it out of her pocket and glanced at the screen.“Unknown number.”Her brow furrowed. It wasn’t often she got calls from unknown numbers, and instinct told her to let it go to voicemail. But something in her gut twisted, urging her to answer.Reluctantly, she swiped to accept. “Hello?”“Is this Emily?” a woman’s voice asked.“Yes. Who’s this?”“This is Nurse Evelyn from North Vale Medical Center. You were listed as the emergency contact for

Pain. That was the first thing that greeted his body as soon as his mind drifted back into consciousness. So much, that even opening his eyes came at a cost he wasn’t able to pay immediately, so he just kept them close.Instead, he let the pain engulf his body, like molten magma spread through his entire body. The pain ate its way through his joints, muscles and flesh. It felt like the most painful way to go yet he knew this wasn’t his time. With great effort, Cullen opened his eyes.A hospital. The harsh fluorescent lighting made him wince. The sterile white ceiling stared back at him, unfamiliar yet unmistakably medical. He tried to shift, but his muscles refused to cooperate. That’s when he noticed the IV in his arm, the heart monitor attached to his chest. His mind raced. How did he get here?Sylvester. There was no denying it.The place he had ambushed him was lonely…too lonely for anyone to have come across him by chance. Heck, they had a lot of time to fight, and no authoritie

Sylvester stood over the collection of weapons laid out before him. Rows of well-engineered firearms, finely crafted swords, spears, and daggers gleamed under the dim lantern light. Beside them, crates of small crystal-infused devices capable of boosting one’s strength and reflexes. They all sat ready for distribution. He nodded in satisfaction. This would do.“Geral,” he called.Geral stepped forward, arms crossed. “Master. You called?”“You’re in charge of these,” Sylvester said, gesturing toward the arsenal. “Make sure every recruit gets what they need.”Geral’s eyebrows rose. “You don’t think this is too much? I mean…these are new recruits. Do they really need this much fire power?”Katherine was passing by, taking some things to and from the store. On hearing the conversation, she frowned. “That’s too little if anything. No grenades? No thowables?” her voice got louder as she got further. “Molotov cocktails? Although, I could prep that on the go…”Sylvester smirked. “I trust you

Cullen’s eyes were bloodshot when he saw Sylvester finally charge him. This was the moment he had been waiting for all this while, and Sylvester was finally giving it to him.The privilege to kill the bastard. However, when he struck with all his might, his fists met resistance. Resistance followed by a few quick jabs to his ribs. Nothing particularly disorienting, but it still mocked him."You’re sloppy," Sylvester said, shaking his head. "You’re not built for this, Cullen. Strength without control is just wasted energy."Cullen snarled. "Shut up!" He launched forward again, his strikes coming faster, more relentless. He swung, kicked, twisted his body for unexpected angles, but every single attack met the same result.Sylvester dodged each of his attacks like they were coming to him at a snail’s pace. Then, just as Cullen pulled back to strike again, Sylvester stepped in and delivered a sharp kick to the side of his knee, sending him stumbling. Again, these attacks didn’t do what

The new warriors were gathered before Sylvester could even finish arranging his thoughts. Geral was like that. Sometimes, too efficient. Sylvester liked that. That was a good thing to be “extra” at.The faces of the soldiers and his students were furrowed in anticipation as they waited for him to address them.“You know, I planned something before…and the message was communicated to you all, right?” Sylvester asked. There were mumbles, but most of it was in agreement.“Well, that was a test, designed to gauge your loyalty.” Sylvester revealed his plan blatantly, causing a rancor. There were mumbles, gasps and even outspoken comments. It was expected.“We’re scrapping that, though, and replacing it with something else,” his eyes swept the crowd, looking through the faces of men that looked too uncomfortable with his words. Those men needed to go.A murmur rippled through the crowd, but Sylvester lifted a hand, silencing them before they could break into full-on whispers.“We’re facing

“So, this…Nine, you call him?” Sylvester asked Otto. He, so far, had tried to be as casual with the boy as possible. He didn’t want to do anything to force his back into a shell, knowing everything he had been through. “Yeah?” Otto picked at the breakfast that was given to him. It was the next day, and the people that had taken him looked like they were going to care enough for him, so he was at peace. “You think you can remember exactly what he looked like?” Sylvester prodded lightly. “Oh, yeah. Beat me for a while. Of course, I remember,” Otto chuckled, his eyes darting back and forth trying to shake a reminiscence too vivid. This was what Sylvester was avoiding. A recall that would send him back into his shell, but it was necessary. How was he going to remember the face of the man, if he didn’t relive his traumatic past? Otto was going to have to be strong here. Otto chewed slowly, eyes flickering with a distant memory. “Tall. Muscular. Scar on his left cheek. Wore a lot o

Sylvester leaned against the edge of the desk, arms crossed, as he studied the young boy standing in front of him. Otto looked as wary as ever, even though they had just given him a nice meal and a set of new clothes that were more comfortable than the tattered pair that he was wearing before. One of the telltale signs of human trafficking is that the effects stick with you forever. Not for a long time…not for a very long time. Forever. And so Sylvester knew deep down, that Otto would never feel as great a sense of peace as the normal person ever again. And the fact that such a young boy had to experience horrors like these made his blood boil. It made him more determined to find these evil criminals and make them pay.Katherine, standing beside Sylvester, watched Otto with careful eyes. “So, these traffickers,” she started, “how many are they?”“Those aren’t productive questions,” Geral face-palms.“Well, we have got to start somewhere,” Katherine shrugged and looked back to the boy

Sylvester stared at the dot on his screen, blinking against the coordinates and lines. It was the tracker he had put on the boy, and the boy had already started moving, having finished his end of day sales, perhaps. Now, Sly just needed to find where he lived, so that he could begin paying the boy regular, more constructed visits, not like the cold standoffish conversation they had in the alleyway. He needed to make the boy see that he could fight for a better life, not just for himself, but for whatever was keeping him on the streets. The dot stopped moving. Not completely, just…around a particular point."An abandoned construction site?" he muttered to himself, narrowing his eyes. This couldn’t be the boy’s final destination. It was either he was remitting money to his suppliers, or taking stock for the next day’s sales. Or he was being jumped. There was the excuse that this could have been his home, since he did look like a runaway, but most runaways would have taken shelter in mor
