Zachary walked frantically down the docks, glancing at his watch every few seconds. The salty air whipped around him, but he barely noticed; his mind was racing. He hoped he had managed to convince Mello to meet him.

He had put on a brave face, trying hard not to show how much he needed Mello’s help. The last thing he wanted was for Mello to see how desperate he felt, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that it was all hanging by a thread.

Every small sound made him flinch. A creaking board, the rustle of a bag in the wind, even the scurrying of rats sent his heart racing. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves, but it only made him more aware of how drenched in sweat he was.

The minutes dragged on, each one feeling like an hour. He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and scanned the empty docks again, willing Mello to appear. He couldn't help but replay their last conversation in his mind, hoping he hadn't pushed too hard.
