Love in Sin

***

Two people fell on the floor with their mouths filled with foam; they were Alan's parents. A bottle of rat poison spilled onto the floor, which Alan thought his parents used to commit suicide.

That afternoon, Alan had just returned from work carrying a plastic bag filled with food he had bought on his way home. The plastic fell simultaneously with Alan, who knelt down sadly. His tears spilled, seeing the death of his parents.

"I thought you would survive all this," Alan whispered.

"Those swindlers! I will find and avenge the death of my parents on them!" groaned Alan, pouring out all the suffering that had happened to the people who had deceived Alan's parents.

That night, Alan's little house was so quiet and serene. His father no longer asked about Alan's work. No more her mother, who always smiled and cooked simple dishes in the kitchen.

They left too quickly and too suddenly. Alan wants to regret and blame the world for being so cruel to his life, but his energy is depleted entirely because of the sadness he is going through.

Alan wants to redo everything that had happened, to prevent the root of all this from happening. However, it was impossible to do. No one can turn back time, either to the future or the past.

The emptiness in the living room of his house made Alan feel sleepy. In the end, he fell asleep while still sitting on the wooden chair.

.

.

Ivy's voice called out to him in a high-pitched voice. Arryn realized that what he saw was a dream about what happened on earth when he was still named Alan.

"Arryn, wake up," Ivy pleaded.

Arryn's eyes opened slowly; sleepiness was still felt by him. Arryn clutched his head. The pain was gone, a sign he was much better.

"What's wrong, Ivy?" Arryn asked.

"I saw a troop of cavalry marching toward the village," explained Ivy, the bird flying as she turned her head to look to the other side of the forest.

"Cavalry? What are they doing at midnight like this?" Arryn asked.

"Looks like someone in the village contacted the nearest town for help," Ivy replied, guessing.

"Then we can't rest here. We'd better start leaving now." Arryn immediately stood up from the banana leaf he used as a bed. He brought food that had been gathered to stock up on the trip.

Arryn decided to leave because the forest location was quite close to the village. He was afraid that the cavalry would check this forest if their purpose of coming was to investigate the tragedy there.

Ivy flew higher than the trees, seeing to the east a quiet village. He asked Arryn to go there and hide.

Arryn didn't want to argue. Instead, he immediately walked with quick steps towards the east. For lighting, he uses firewood in his right hand.

"How's your condition, Arryn?" Ivy asked.

"Much better than before. It seems my mana regen is working well," Arryn replied.

The two of them began to leave the forest until they arrived at the gates of the Rivermouth village. Arryn went straight in and walked fastly down the village's main road with Ivy.

Rivermouth has a smaller population than Wintermere – the name of the village where Arryn and his mother live. Most of Rivermouth's residents are breeders and farmers.

They stopped in front of a closed tavern. Arryn continued to walk out of the forest, not seeing the cavalry chasing him.

"Looks like they're not going to chase us all the way here," Arryn replied.

"That is good. However, I'd better check it out first," Ivy said.

She suddenly disappeared and flew high, beyond the people's houses, to watch the movement of the cavalry. Ivy could clearly see that the soldiers who came to Wintermere were standing there, not chasing Arryn.

Ivy concluded that the cavalry would not be after them anymore. She immediately floated down to approach Arryn, sitting on a chair in front of the tavern.

"They're not chasing us," Ivy replied, appearing in front of Arryn.

"Then what were they doing there?" Arryn asked.

"It's like investigating and guarding the village," said Ivy.

Suddenly the tavern curtain opened and revealed the face of a middle-aged woman in a long nightdress. She opened the tavern door and asked what Arryn was doing this midnight.

"I... just got chased by a beast that led me to this village," Arryn explained.

"Beasts? There is no beast in the forest," the woman explained, squinting her eyes.

"They're there; it's big with wide white fangs," said Arryn.

"Listen up. I don't care if you meet a beast or an imaginary animal. It was a tough night for all people here. So can you get out of here and don't make any noise?!" the tavern lady insisted. Arryn nodded because he had no other choice.

He walked back with Ivy away from the tavern. The middle-aged woman immediately closed the door and curtains before her husband approached.

"Who are you angry with?" asked the shop owner's husband.

"Foreigners. He talks a lot, making it difficult for me to sleep," said the middle-aged woman.

Curious about the stranger's appearance, the tall husband immediately opened the curtains and wooden door. No one else on the village's main road except Arryn.

"Hey. Are you hungry?" the man asked Arryn.

Arryn's steps suddenly stopped as his head turned. He saw someone else was now opening the tavern's door for him. However, his brows furrowed as his eyes narrowed. It was as if he had seen the man's face before.

When Arryn walked over to him, he knew it was Brian. He's a man who often visits Arryn's house bringing food, but Selena never visits him back.

"Uncle Brian?" Arryn asked, making sure.

"Arryn?" Brian asked.

Arryn nodded his head. They both finally smiled at the same time. Arryn was grateful that Uncle Brian visited his house so often that he could be saved tonight.

"What were you doing in Rivermouth?" Brian asked.

"There are a lot of things that happen. I decided to leave Wintermere," Arryn replied.

Brian invited Arryn to come in and calmly explained everything. Brian sat next to the middle-aged woman who had scolded Arryn earlier. However, the woman did not say anything when Brian invited Arryn into her tavern.

"My mother died in the hands of the villagers," Arryn replied, starting the conversation with something startling.

"Selena died?!" Brian asked, surprised, with his eyes wide open.

"Who is Selena?" asked the middle-aged woman, who is none other than Brian's wife.

"She was… a customer at Wintermere. She always asks for food to be delivered there," Brian replied, smiling slightly, trying to convince his wife.

Arryn watched them both. He only realized one thing from Brian's attitude when he heard the news about his mother and his response when answering his wife's questions.

Brian likes Selena. That was the reason he always sent hot dishes to Arryn's house.

Arryn had to admit that his mother's face was much prettier than the fat and curt wife Brian's. It was natural for Brian to approach Selena because everyone knew that Selena was a young widow.

"Why did she die?" Brian asked.

"About that, I'm not in the mood to talk about it," said Arryn.

"I'm sorry," Brian said, feeling guilty

Brian sighed as he smiled at Arryn. There was a pain in his heart when the woman he loved left him too soon. Now, there were no more women in Wintermere that he would go to with food and feelings.

"Now, where are you going?" Brian asked.

"My mother told me to go to Ravengarden. In there, I have to meet someone," said Arryn.

"It's quite a distance from here. It will take about three nights to get there," Brian replied.

"For now on, you can sleep here tonight; it's freezing and dangerous outside. Then, I'll make you dinner. You must be hungry," Brian continued, smiling broadly as he stood up.

Even though he would never see Selena again, he would at least serve what Brian thought would be the last meal for Selena's family.

Arryn smiled as he continued to say thank you. But, unlike Brian, his fat wife started to leave them as she stepped onto the second floor of this tavern.

"He's been so nice to you, Arryn," Ivy said softly.

"Because he likes my mom," Arryn replied.

"But isn't that woman his wife?"

"Who can bear to live with such a woman like that?" Arryn joked, whispering to Ivy.

"You're a cunning man, Arryn," said Ivy.

Arryn smiled faintly at Ivy's words, "I'm just being realistic, nothing more."
