The Hero of Chaos

Twenty years felt like hell. My system was locked since the day they threw me into prison. This seal was only released after an explosion destroyed it. All this long, they just feed me disgusting porridge every day.

I'm lucky this is not my first life. At least I could learn how to walk on my own and do other things. I would have killed myself if not for my grudge against Amenus.

[WARNING! YOUR DISASTER CORE HAS BEEN STOLEN!]

"The hero is back!"

The happy cheers of hundreds of people make my ears hurt. Those elves look at me with hopeful eyes.

"The Hero has defeated the dragon!"

"We're safe!"

"We can definitely defeat Amenus!"

My eyes are wide open when I hear that name. Right, I remember that woman earlier said they were hunting Amenus. We have the same enemy.

"Where is he? Where is Amenus?" I asked the dying old man.

They just look at each other and silence answer me. They slowly opened the line, letting someone walks toward me.

"He's going north," he says.

I watch him from top to bottom. His has short golden hair and sharp jaw. He looks arrogant and strong, his clothes are more luxurious than the others with a sword. Most of the elves here only hold bows.

"Where is north?"

He stares at me silently. His eyes are icy cold, as if he is looking for faults in me.

"What's your name?" he asks back.

I'm Gerald, I should answer that. But I've been reincarnated, and I wonder if I'm still the same person. I don't want to be the old weak Gerald anymore.

"Gin," I answer.

He nods then puts his sword into its scabbard. "I'm Leogus, son of King Sarkan."

I'm not surprised if this arrogant elf is a prince. Rich people always behave like that.

"Come with me to see the King. The King of Kiran will definitely want to see our hero."

"I'm not going with you," I refuse firmly. It sounds louder than it should be because I didn't expect my voice to be this heavy.

He turns around and says, "We have the same enemy. Follow me if you want to kill Amenus."

He walks away without saying anything else. I will cut his throat if I don't need his information.

I look around. The palace is wholly destroyed, and corpses lay everywhere. I don't know where the people of Amenus are. So far, I only know from the maid who sent me food that Amenus is a King. I never knew how the person who killed my family could become a King and wield such great power. Even the maids who sent me food daily were green-colored monsters with pointy ears.

I have no choice but to follow Leogus. Still with amazed looks, they ask me to get into the carriage. Unfortunately, I'm in the same carriage as Leogus.

We don't talk much. The whole way, he just looks at me suspiciously.

I open the window. The carriage passes through a meadow with many flowers, looking different from where Amenus' palace was.

We pass a group of beast-eared humans, they are collecting flowers and running around like children. As I expected, I am not in the world I knew. There is no magic, dragons, or elves on earth.

"What is the name of this world?" I finally speak after so long. I can't go on being clueless like a stupid.

Leogus raises an eyebrow. "This world? This is a free land of this continent. No empire has this land, all beings can live here."

"What planets?"

"Planet? What is that?"

Now he stares at me like I'm a crazy guy. The people of this world have not learned about the solar system. I can't blame them since their technology isn't very advanced either.

It's silence for a while until he speaks again. "You defeated the dragon of the abyss with your bare hands. It was unbelievable. We lost thousands of people against the dragon and still failed. Well, it's not surprising if the Hero can trounce a dragon."

He doesn't look like someone who loves to compliment others. I can feel the sarcasm in his tone.

"You are not a hero, aren't you?"

I ignore him. I never claimed to be a hero or anything like that.

He raises his head, looking down at me. "Who are you?"

"Gin."

"Not your name. What are you?"

He's not as stupid as I thought. But I can't possibly say that I am a disaster that will destroy his world. I still need information about Amenus.

He chuckles slyly. "It doesn't matter if you don't tell me. At least we have a same enemy."

We arrive at the gates of the fortress. The fort is made of very sturdy and tall wood. Behind the entrance, there are several giant trees with houses on them.

The roots of the enormous trees become roads like hills, and the giant branches become bridges between the trees. I've never seen anything like this, not even in movies. The carriage moves slowly through the tree roots and then up the tree trunk that is carved into a road. The people's houses are between the trees. They look like houses in general but are made of wood. We head to the biggest tree, the top of the tree, which is covered with leaves.

Everyone pulls over to the side of the road. Those elves look like ants on this giant tree. Children run after our carriage carrying flowers. Most of them are elves; the rest are children with animal ears. I don't see an ordinary human here.

"That's the Hero! The Hero is back!"

"He defeated the dragon!"

Rumors spread very fast. I close the carriage window; their stares make me uncomfortable.

"You look very different from our previous Hero," Leogus comments again. He is surprisingly talkative.

"Our Hero before seemed friendly and wise. He was my teacher who taught me magic. Whereas you look like a lake in winter, frigid and frozen."

My eyes stab him. This is the first time I'm being called as cold. In fact, other people often took advantage of me in the past because of my face, a total loser.

"Just like Amenus. He wasn't from this world..." He pauses and looks at me, as if he knows if I would be surprised.

I can't hide my surprise. Amenus is not from this world; I know that. But the previous Hero wasn't from this world either. The real question is how they got here? I was born in the cycle of reincarnation; do they also experience the same thing?

"And I'm sure you're not from this world either," he continues.

"How do you know?"

He doesn't answer. The carriage stops, and he just leaves me behind immediately.

I go outside, and in front of me is a big wooden castle. We are still in the trees, and this castle is at its highest peak. This castle looks like a typical concrete castle but is made of wood. Whoever made it must have worked very hard.

Two maids lead me into a room. Everything is wooden and luxurious, just like a palace should be.

"We will clean you up, Lord Hero."

I look at myself in the mirror, and I'm speechless. I look like a mess.

My body is skinny, with only skin and bones. My silver hair is long and messy. But most importantly, my irises are red. I never knew if I had reincarnated into a red-eyed person.

My face is covered with dragon blood, dirty like mud. The maids help me clean my body, bathe me, and cut my hair shorter. But I'm still ugly.

[The system has detected physical damage. Do you want to fix it?]

[<Yes>           <No>]

Even the system can't stand my appearance.

Yes.

I close my eyes, drawing air into my lungs. A stinging sensation touches my entire skin. It feels like a new power is being injected into my body. I feel healthier and fresher.

"Wow..."

I forget there are still maids here. They freeze with their mouths open.

I see myself in the mirror. I can't believe my eyes. My body is bigger and sturdier. I look a hundred years younger.

The two maids look down in embarrassment. They immediately search for new clothes that fit me better. I guess they are familiar with magic, as they aren't afraid of my quick changes.

"The king is waiting for you, Lord Hero."

They lead me to another room. A huge and spacious room, like a meeting place for palace magnates. Dozens of people line at the edge of the red carpet while the King sits on the throne.

All eyes are on me as I walk confidently in front of the King. That King doesn't look old; he looks the same age as Leogus. He is gorgeous with long blonde hair and a well-defined face.

I don't bow or salute. If I do, they will look down on me. Just as people in power look down on me as Gerald.

The King comes down from his throne to meet me. I thought he would slap me for being rude, but that handsome elf just stand before me. He stares at me very intently, even colder than Amenus' gaze.

A second later, he prostrates before me.

Wait, what?

"My savior! Your lowly servant pays homage to you," he says in a thunderous voice.

The other elves do the same; they bow down until their faces touch the floor. Except for two people, Leogus and an elf with a spear.

But what is this? Why would a King bow down before me? Is the position of a hero higher than the King?

The room suddenly falls silent. They still bow down as if I am a god statue.

"Stand up," I say a little awkwardly.

Everyone stand up as I ordered. The King's gaze turns warmer.

"I didn't know I could meet you so soon. I am very grateful because you have saved our troops."

They really believe that I am a hero. I never admit that. But what should I tell them? They will fight me if I say I am a disaster that will destroy the entire world. In the end, I will lose information about Amenus.

"Just tell me, where is he?"

I'm starting to get annoyed with them. This meeting is wasting my time.

"Wait a moment, Your Majesty!"

An elf with a spear in his hand interrupts. Only he and Leogus didn't bow before me. For Leogus, it's understandable because he knows I'm not a hero. But this old elf, I have to be careful with him.

"What is it, Bartos?"

Bartos approaches me. His eyes observed me carefully.

"He doesn't look like the hero foretold, Your Majesty."

His words make whispers heard throughout the room.

"Bartos! Watch your words!" The King gets angry, and his eyes almost jump out.

"As we know, our previous hero, The Great Gerald has blue eyes and a handsome face."

Is he body-shaming me now? I used to be teased for being ugly, but with my new face, I'm many times more handsome than a few hours ago.

And why did the previous Hero have the name Gerald? I'm glad I no longer use that name, or I'll create more misunderstandings.

"He has red eyes, Your Majesty! No human has red eyes!" Bartos suddenly raises his voice.

Bartos walks around me. "He could be the curse that has been predicted!"

Curse? After the Hero, now I'm accused of being a curse. What's next? Demon Kings?

Everyone gasps, and in a second, public opinion starts to change.

"Just tell me where's Amenus, and I will be gone from your presence forever." I am too annoyed that my voice is accidentally raised. I sound furious.

I see Bartos's Adam's apple go up and down; he swallows hard. Having a deep voice like this isn't bad either.

I am still waiting for someone to answer me. I can't count how times I've asked this, and no one has ever responded to me.

"What do you want?" I'm frustrated. This problem must be solved quickly.

Bartos stands before me. Because his body is shorter than mine, he has to look up.

"I ask for a battle!"
