“Now, Chloe, your new name is imprinted on the adventurer’s card. This is to avoid any attention from bounty hunters and other people trying to ki... hunt you down.” I follow it up and present the fresh one created by the bounty hunter Rodrigo.

……………………

The adventurer’s card flashes before our eyes as I tell Chloe her new name. Although other details remain the same, there is information that is best to be hidden from the eyes of many. Chloe instantly perceives the differences and notes them inside her brain. As expected to a princess.

Even though Princess Chloe, which she would now be called “Zoe” by the adventurer’s guild, looks down and question things. She mutters to herself, “Do we really need to run away, Kuro?”

That is the saddest part. Chloe has asked this question for quite some time, and my answer still remains the same.

“I’m sorry, princess, but we need to do this. It’s for your own safety.”

……………………..

Just before Chloe and I enter the place, a window pops up and notifies me about a new and special quest. Is it because it senses that I am near a town and Chloe could become an adventurer? Who knows? This system of mine is quite a mystery.

[New Quest Unlocked!]

[Quest: Collect 5 quests from the adventurer’s guild and reach Rank -F]

[Reward: Grenades, Smoke, and Flash Bangs.]

If someone wants to ask me, I want to avoid going to the adventurer’s guild and exposing ourselves to bounty hunters, mercenaries, and the like. It is a stupid idea. But it is what it is, and it’s the only thing we can do right now. Besides, LOOK AT THOSE BEAUTIFUL ITEMS THAT I MUST TAKE! SMOKE BOMBS AND FLASH BANGS? OH, HELL YEAH! THOSE ARE THE GRENADES THAT EVERYONE IS DYING TO GET FROM AN FPS GAME. AND RIGHT NOW, IT COULD BE IN MY HANDS!

I have an idea how these bombs work, but I would save the explanation for later. This is a fantasy world. So anything could be altered, including the ones that I already know.

A-Anyhow, we also need to replenish our goods. And according to Chloe, potions are a must for these types of adventurers. She has dreamt of exploring the world and becoming an adventurer. So when she becomes one from Rodrigo, the bounty hunter and merchant we met a while back, she can’t contain her excitement in visiting the adventurer’s guild.

“Remember, we came here to inquire about the adventurer’s guild quests, ranking system, and any information about your brother and your Kingdom. If we find nothing from the last part, we bail the hell out of here.”

I want to tell Chloe about upgrading myself if we complete a task. But I doubt she could understand those terminologies.

“As you have suggested, Kuro. I will do as you say,” Princess Chloe reacts, and nods.

…………………….

“It’s… Lifeless compared to the ones my parents have told me.”

“Sadly, it is, princess… This is the real world.”

Even I am stunned at what I am seeing right now. The world I have come from does not differ from this… Kepler world.

We pass by a bunch of houses made of wood and other common materials. These people have roofs that are enough to shield them from the rain but could easily be damaged if it is anything more. The place is brimming with people, but their mouths are curled downward, and their bodies lack nourishment. A sour mood also enters the site. My system also alerts me that this place is Honeywood town, the last area that the Winfort Kingdom has occupied. Women ramble around on the plain and work for countless hours on the field, and some are mothers too. Grown men do the same but work on a different shift and load as they pound the hammer or become wannabe blacksmiths of the area.

I wonder why they do not wish to slay monsters and become adventurers. And then… I soon realised that morphing into a warrior requires risks of getting killed by monsters, missions, or fellow adventurers acting as bounty hunters. Furthermore, that is not far from the truth. And I know that Princess Chloe also recalls that being on the front lines would demand a life to protect others.

Nevertheless, the lack of aesthetics does not stop the villagers from marching with a smile on their faces as the parents meet their children with food on their plates. They have contentment smudged on their cheeks. And I am just reminded how lucky they are to be just alive.

But every city has people who live at higher heights. In my world, they are called the bourgeoisie or the people who capitalise on the market above anything else. In other words, the rich and powerful, right below the nobles.

And when Princess Chloe beholds everything, she turns to me and asks me a question. “Have you lived in such a place before, Kuro? Where are people segregated from the poor and the rich? “

If only I could nod, I would’ve already done it. Alas, I am just a mere inanimate weapon with a grown man’s soul. “Yes, princess. But my world called ‘Earth’ is somewhat peaceful and… pleasant. Well, other places are exactly like this, and… people suffer for dozens of reasons, and having a corrupt government only ignites the flame. Basically, this town has it worse than the ones I know. But, well, maybe I’m just ignorant about it.”

“My family is not corrupt! We have placed taxes, which are spent on the military, to conquer lands so that we could find more resources to trade and expand our horizons! We try our best to relieve them with the taxes, since a Kingdom needs to be alive because of its people. That is why the King and Queen should always be praised by the villagers they own. Loyalty is a must for the King and queen, and that is what my parents have told me!”

It is a lengthy lecture. But my words cut sharper than a knife. “Then who do you think is the king of the Kingdom, princess?”

“Of course, it is my father! He is the crowned ruler of this Kingdom! He is the most important person above anyone else! My father cares more about his people than anyone else, maybe even more than my great great grandparents! Father has visited no villages because he is too aware of the war between Kingdoms and Empires, fighting on the front lines, just like anyone else! It’s all for spreading the land for the people.” Princess Chloe almost never stutters when she answers my question.

This youthful girl is not a spoiled brat or a naïve woman. But… her eyes have seen such narrow places that occlude her vision. Her parents share the same idea; however, they have yet to see life way past the boundaries of war.

If they speak of peace, why would this Kingdom resolve in violence? Is it because this world relies on the powerful beings leading the place… or is it because they couldn’t care less about anything else besides expanding one’s land? Despite my thoughts, I refuse to tell them to Chloe. It is not like I hate to bite back and argue with her about our different concepts, but... we have more important things to dwell on rather than holding a quarrel.

I might have become a poet after all that. But that is just… running inside my mind after realising I have taken my world for granted. Or maybe this is just a serious matter, and my brain… refuses to crack a joke? As an old man who has lived a mundane life, I couldn’t tell.

“I’ll ask you again sometime soon… Until then, I hope you should know the answer better than anyone else... That is, if you really want to be the queen.”

Chloe doesn’t get what I have just told her. But she doesn’t refute either. Since I have already held off the conversation, the topic has been adjourned as we head out for the guild.

My role here isn’t an adventurer trying to journey the depths of this fantasy world but a mentor for this young lady. Maybe this is why fate has given us a second chance?... Or am I just overthinking things up?

Ironically, I am a gun. If I were a human person, I could’ve easily shown Princess Chloe more than what meets the eye. But I have to make do with everything we have and serve as her weapon to find our purpose in life.

Regardless, we resume our stride and end the topic right there as soon as we stop by in front of the adventurer’s guild.
