Regardless, we resume our stride and end the topic right there as soon as we stop by in front of the adventurer’s guild. It is unlike any other. The only difference from the adventurer’s guild among its contenders of the building is that… this place has an inn, diner, and is closely built in the middle of the plaza, where anyone could see compared to other stores and businesses. Right next to the adventurer’s guild is the merchant’s firm, which controls the market and anything else revolving around money.
When Chloe nuzzles the wooden slide and enters the adventurer’s guild, she is immediately welcomed by a woman - a staff from the guild; I guess - and is quickly taken to the reception bar.
The place is filled with adventurers, I assume, sitting on the table and chugging their beers overflowing from their mugs. When we pass by, these adventurers steal a glance. I believe they are mesmerised by Chloe’s beauty, especially when she has cut her hair and painted it silver.
But when these individuals have finally had enough, the adventurers return their looks at the glass and resume drinking their hearts out.
However, when the same adventurers see the staff, they raise their mugs and cheer for her existence
This woman who has greeted us might be the receptionist of the place.
“G-Greetings! Ha-ha! I’m the newest member of the adventurer’s guild staff, but a veteran when it comes to fighting and taking down monstrous beasts, you know? Even so, I’ll be the one working with you and explain what you need to do about here, hmm?!”
Now that I’ve perceived it, this girl right in front of Chloe and me is… NOT A HUMAN! WOAH, LOOK AT THAT! CUTE CAT EARS AND… WAIT A MINUTE?! DO I LIKE FURRIES ALL OF A SUDDEN?!
A-Anyway, just like what I’ve hinted, the receptionist looks human, but it isn’t a one, thanks to those pointy ears and a tail wagging back and forth. The wonderful-looking lady wears a short skirt that attracts everyone’s attention and a fitted uniform akin to a steward on a plane. Not to mention, she has eyes that lure any male or female in the area. I am a grown adult, so her looks have easily fooled me. Alas, I am a gun. There is nothing I can do about it but stare at the girl from afar. Even Chloe recognises my hormones as she lightly shakes me, warning me about that intense gaze I have been releasing.
The receptionist woman coughs and welcomes us for the second time. “Apologies for the peculiar introduction. My name is Anne! Anne A****n and I will be your staff for today! Hmmm. From the looks of it, you want to become an adventurer, right? Can you read and fight? Not at the same time, of course, hmm?”
Everything Anne has said overwhelms Chloe. I could almost imagine twirling lines above the princess’ head, indicating that she almost lost her consciousness if it were not for Chloe’s diligent mind. And this staff keeps saying, “Hmm”. But we have saved ourselves some time, considering we already have an adventurer’s guild card proving our identity. I could only hope that this identification card Rodrigo, the merchant, gave us would be valid in this adventurer’s guild.
“We’ve come here to… inquire about things from this guild. Can you kindly give us information about how we could rank up? We are currently sitting at Rank-F, which I assume is the lowest of them all. I would like to increase my rank and be of help for this guild.”
“I would also like to request any information about the current standing of the Kingdom of Winfort and news from the said Kingdom. Although I am aware that adventurers do not hold hands to the Kingdom, I have… personal matters to attend to what is happening over that side, just like anybody else.”
Chloe continues, flashing the most angelic smile she could ever make. The adventurers nearby also pause whatever they are doing and briefly appreciate Chloe’s face.
Chloe even speaks to this staff formally… I just do hope our cover wouldn’t be blown away because of Chloe’s manner of talking. Well, it is also a good thing that Chloe remembers what to demand from anyone specifically. She is more intelligent than I am. But in terms of common knowledge, I am the victor there.
“Ah. Very well. I am pleased to inform you about anything you wish to know about our guild.”
Anne begins a prolonged explanation about the adventurer’s guild concepts of rank, monsters, and the like. In summary, the rank works alphabetically from -G, which is the weakest, and S+ as the highest or the special case. The same thing could be applied to monsters that have already been discovered and items that can be used in monsters. These are called “Grades”, and just like the name itself, the adventurer’s guild is the one capable of grading such abilities.
Rank= -G adventurers can only take G-rank quests and one G+ mission. Lower rank adventurers, for example, would need to have a party of Rank= F adventurers to even take on quests within Rank-F grades.
That is how the system works.
“And true. Even though the guild and some adventurers do not have any relationship with the war, most of our people are hit by the aftermath because of it. So your questions are completely plausible, uhm….” Anne checks for Chloe’s identification card, which has been forged. So right now, Chloe has a different name. “Zoe Sunstone…. As of date, the Winfort Kingdom is ruled by Flynn Winfort, who earned the right to be called King, since all his family members are absent from the castle. The King and queen died after a tragic event - may the queen and King bless our souls -. However, the Western Republic is rumoured to ally with the Northern Empire. And they plan to issue an attack within the next few months. Sadly, that’s the only information the adventurer’s guild could offer. You could check other guilds, affirm, and inquire more about it, Zoe Sunstone.”
That is… really too much to take. But apparently, we have gotten ourselves some juicy information about the world of Kepler. However, it seems Chloe has been caught in a pinch. For a few seconds, she thinks to herself about whatever is running through her mind. After a quick moment, she reverts to her usual self, bows at Anne, and thanks her for the piece of information.
But I have the feeling that Anne has chosen her words quite well. And it seems all of them are true, since I have been hearing the same stuff from the adventurers nearby. However, my guts are really running rampant right now. And I trust myself more than I trust this receptionist girl in front of me, despite her appealing looks and C-cup breasts.
The receptionist named “Anne” checks Chloe out from head to toe. Even before entering the place, the adventurer’s guild test has begun… And why do I get the feeling that this dimwitted girl is not a novice but a veteran acting like a newbie? Or is it just… my imagination?
I have tried searching for any identification from Anne, but… my system couldn’t detect anything. It keeps saying [Gauge Error! Your level is not enough to activate this ability] and return me to the homepage of my abilities… Is it really possible to find someone capable of deflecting my search skill despite having no system in their name? Or is it something else? My guts tell me otherwise...
I haven’t noticed, but there are eyes glaring in my direction… specifically at me. I check the entire room to see if someone from these adventurers has piqued Chloe’s interest and has seen me, but… none of them meet my criteria. It almost feels like this enigmatic being is playing around with me. There is some sort of killing intention released here and there, but... I couldn’t detect it. Is my system malfunctioning?
I am… a gun, right? Nobody should know that I am alive and watching these people….
A cold sweat runs down my spine, telling me that I have to run away. But I can’t. And if I warn Chloe right now, this girl, Anne, would note that I am indeed alive.
After Anne has ended the conversation and has given Chloe the title of an adventurer, Chloe turns to me and chirps, “We did it, Kuro! I’m finally an adventurer! With this, we can grab those missions from the bulletin board, complete them, and travel back to the south where my Kingdom is located!”
Of course, Chloe whispers all that. I doubt even Anne could discern such words coming from Chloe. However, when the receptionist checks Chloe, the princess is leaning her head while looking at me.
“What’s that over there you’re holding?” she asks, with her hand specifically pointing at me.
Again, my heart, if I have one, pounds like a drum in a metal concert. This is the first time that I think my life is in danger, but there is no threat in front of me... I think.
“Ah, this? This is, uh…” Fortunately, Chloe is a clever girl. She knows that people might know my weakness if she tells anyone about whatever I am right now. “Ah, it’s just something that I have…”
“I see. Very well, then, adventurer! Wish you luck! And I hope you can take down more monsters, finish your tasks, and complete rewards from the adventurer’s guild! We are happy to see you around!”
“Likewise.”
Chloe brings me to the bulletin board and checks for any tasks. The only quests available for the lowest rank are taking care of goblins, boars, and other stuff! Naturally, we have to bring any evidence for slaying these creatures, which would serve no problem. I also suggest Chloe to take missions that involve collecting herbs from a designated place as a start… But why do I feel like someone is closely watching us? But when I turn around, I spot no one.
After getting five quests, which are also enough for us to rank up once we’re through with it, I catch Chloe’s attention and mutter, “We need to get out of here, fast.”
“I’m aware that some people are going to chase us down, which is evident from the bounty hunter who tracked us down. But with this new look, I don’t think anyone would notice our guise, right, Kuro? And I thought we were going to spend the night here after everything? Sleeping on the outside without any tents, warm bed, or even a shower is not something I would recommend.”
“Please, Chloe… You have to listen to me.”
I lower my voice and talk seriously to Chloe. She hastily identifies the town of my voice, so she reluctantly agrees and exits the guild almost immediately.
Bonus Chapter Third-Person Point of View ___________________________ Two peculiar individuals enter the radar of the adventurer’s guild, and that catches the attention of the Bounty Hunter’s leader. One is a woman with short hair painted in silver, and the other is unknown to the people living in Kepler. At first glance, the building is nothing more different from the ones stationed in every other village and town. But there is something cooking underground… literally. By the time these two individuals leave the adventurer’s guild in a hurry, a poster hovers near the entrance, reminding the receptionist about her task. The picture from the poster resembles quite closely the woman who has hurriedly exited the building. Anne A****n, who is currently working as a staff in Honeywood town and a roaming adventurer, is paid by someone from the higher-up for a specific job. She couldn’t say who hired her to kill someone. But the person behind the murderous intention belongs to none other t
Back to Princess Chloe’s Perspective____________________At once, Chloe exited the place and ran as far away as her little legs could, gripping me tightly in her hands. We have no idea about the time. But we know we’ve created a fair distance between the village and our origin, thinking we would be safe away from the town. I am the one who has suggested that, and I know someone or something would come after for us if we idle for more. The next thing we know, nighttime arrives, and the environment becomes pitch black. Multiple stars shine above our heads, and the moon, shaped like a square, hovers around us. It is odd but calming. Back in my world, moons, stars, and other planets are in the form of a sphere and others… figures. And none of them are shaped like a square. We are inside a forest yet again. Thankfully, no monsters reside in the area. Normally, these horrible forests like what we are in right now are the epitome of woe or death. As luck would have it, Chloe is still in one
“BAAH! DAMNED THIS ETERNAL REGRET! I will practise! Come, Kuro! Let’s go and practice! I’ll use those trees as my target dummies and hit them using my bullets!”“Uh…. Chloe? Did you just…?”“DID I WHAT NOW, KURO?” Chloe narrows her eyes and growls at me.“N-Nothing. I’m aboard whatever you have in mind, princess.”And here, I think Chloe will sleep after our conversation ends. But I have thought wrong. Chloe picks herself from the ground, drags me out of my place, and rushes towards the trees. She then gapes at the plants for a few seconds before gazing back at me.“Tell me where to train, Kuro. The pain inside my chest continues to consume me, and I want to do something about it.”“Trust the gun… and respect the gun. And for that, you should-...”“I know!” Chloe says, as she encases her hand around the trigger... Around me. She then stares at the tree as if it is a creature heading toward her... It is as if this situation is a life-or-death situation for her. “I know… It’s just that,
The [Forest Cerberus] finds an opening and slashes Chloe’s left arm. Her non-dominant arm. Chloe recognises that she has messed up, so she darts away. But she couldn’t sprint for more. As soon as the princess glances at her back, the same [Forest Cerberus] catches up and plans to pierce her with its horns. Those four [Forest Cerberus] are also tailing behind, waiting for the perfect opportunity to gang up on her.If Chloe still wishes to improve, now’s the time. She aims the gun again at the creature, but her confidence diminishes. The princess isn’t sure if the bullets will hit her enemies… or if it will repeat the same mistake she did earlier. “I… I don’t know, Kuro… I can’t hit the enemy…” Chloe murmurs, and plans on accepting death as she slowly closes her eyes. Her hand shivers again. She is still trying, and Chloe would pull the trigger somehow or in some way. However, she already knows the conclusion. Some bullets would miss the [Forest Cerberus], or they would only hit their
“Did you just say ‘Game Over?’” I ask, trying to make sure I have heard the correct word. Chloe hardly bobs her head, avoids my gaze, and replies, “Y-Yes, Kuro… Because that is what you always say… And I want to mimic your way of speaking… You are somewhat having fun with it, and I also find it amusing to my ears. Hence, I said the word. I apologise if it does not suit me-...” “No, no, no, no, no, no.” I shake my head and continue. “As a matter of fact, that’s actually pretty dope, princess! You can copy whatever I’m saying, and I don’t mind a bit! It’s just refreshing, which took me by surprise to hear you say something out of the blue. And nice shot, by the way! We finally killed the [Forest Cerberus]!” “There you again, saying words that I do not know. What is a ‘Dope?’... Nevermind. I will learn it sometime soon. The terminologies you say always remind me that you do not come from this world but from another. Which is why I feel at ease when I’m with you…” “Anyhow, thank you fo
I leave the decision to Chloe. I have already made up my mind, but I am not alone in this fight. Chloe is with me, and it would be rude to decide whether to take the mission, although it would benefit the two of us. If there’s a decision to make, it is best to survey Chloe to see if she is willing to do it. And if she isn’t, we’d figure something out.Thankfully, the princess is up for the task. When she first hears my thoughts, Chloe contemplates for a second and agrees. But she looks at me with a worried look in her eyes. After a moment, she voices her concerns. “Are you sure we can win this fight, despite the fact that [Goblin Shaman[ is way above our level, Kuro?”Again, for the umpteenth time, I would’ve already shaken it from left to right if only I had a head. “To be honest, I don’t want to give you false hope, so… I don’t know. The best thing we can do is to try. And besides, your aim is becoming better than usual. That’s a start.”“The [Forest Cerberus] needs four bullets to
The fight finally begins. Shedding no fear, Chloe dashes out from the boulder and reveals herself in front of the goblins. When the [Goblin Shaman] and the small-fries notice her, the leader quickly raises their guard and orders its minions to batter us. But Chloe is faster than them. The moment Chloe lands on the ground, she grips me tighter in her hands, aims me at the goblins, and fires three bullets at each goblin at a time. Although a headshot could easily eliminate those goblins and lessen the usage of our ammunition, Chloe doesn’t want to risk it and plans on defeating this mob in a slow but steady fashion. I, too, prefer it that way for now. When Chloe first fought against monsters, she was terrified and lacked confidence. She always told herself, “What if my bullets wouldn’t hit my enemies?” and watched her hands tremble in fear. But all that changed when I deactivated my [Aimbot] and Chloe defeated five [Forest Cerberus] on her own. It was clutch, but she did the job. And no
I thought we had it. I thought this was the end of the line, and Chloe and I would resume our merry journey like a typical day. But it isn’t. Fighting bosses is never easy. And we’ve learned a valuable lesson that… we need to earn our win if we want to be stronger.[Enraged Form has been activated][Second Phase commences for [Goblin Shaman]]Suddenly, the atmosphere changes. Despite the lack of gusts blowing from the seams, there is also a tingling sensation in the air. The wind comes from the [Goblin Shaman]. Additionally, our opponent becomes taller, and its mass increases. And if my gamer senses are correct, this boss of ours is heading to the second phase, which is more powerful than the first one… of course..The [Goblin Shaman] increases its health, and I assume that the boss also gains more strength, leading to more damage than it could before. Not to mention, there is a forcefield-like glass emitting from the monster’s surroundings. Nothing happens when Chloe aims me at the [
