Count Gressil had already caught wind of the dangerous situation, and the elite knights were immediately put on high alert. Although the commoners had turned against them, the Count’s informers remained loyal and helped him keep an eye on his enemies from afar.

Ezra returned to the mansion late in the afternoon and found Count Gressil arguing with his daughter.

“You need to stay inside the mansion until the commoners can be brought under control. That demon has convinced them that you are their only enemy, and those fools will do their best to find you,” the Count spoke in a serious voice, pacing the room like a troubled general. “I will not let them snatch my daughter from me!”

Tanya listened to everything her father had to say before replying in her usual calm voice. “We both know the commoners are easy to manipulate. Zepheroth’s cultists are trying to weaken the city internally. But we still have the Goddess on our side. Besides, no one except the dissenters knows we are here.”

As the minutes rolled by, the clouds drifted away, and the moon reappeared in the night sky surrounded by her entourage of blinking stars. A cool breeze blew from the east, soothing the senses, and cicadas buzzed in the distance, adding to the feeling of solitude.Ezra moved closer to Tanya, and she gently leaned on him, laying her head on his shoulder. “I wish this night could last forever,” she whispered. “I don’t know how this war will end, but I just want to freeze this moment and take comfort in your company while I still can.”“Don’t worry, we will get through this. Even the darkest night ends when the sun comes out. We just need to have faith,” Ezra replied.Tanya looked at Ezra and put her hands on his suit. “You know, I always thought I would join the sisterhood of Ishani and become a High Priestess someday. But somehow, I can’t imagine myself in those white robes anymore. And I think it’s because of you, Lord Ezra Romanov.”Ezra blushed as Tanya looked deep into his eyes, an

The Royal Guards patrolling the palace gardens started searching the area, and the Manticore summoned by Servius crawled across the grassy path and positioned itself in front of the back gate, securing the only escape route.Ezra guided the princess to the ladder, and Tanya followed behind them. Under the cover of darkness, the trio quickly disappeared inside the tunnel. “Take her to the tower,” Ezra instructed Tanya before handing Aleena to her.Frantic shouts and warnings resounded from above as the guards continued yelling into the night, searching for the missing princess.“Seal all entrances and exits and gather the attendants in the courtyard!”“No one is to be allowed to leave the palace grounds until the princess is found!”Just then, a much calmer voice rang out in the background. It was none other than the chief court mage, Servius. “Unyielding Dawn.”His spell lifted the darkness, summoning an artificial sun to illuminate the palace grounds. It pushed the shadows back and b

After flying around all the neighboring villages, Princess Aleena was finally satisfied and decided to call it a night. But instead of returning to the palace, she asked Ezra and Tanya to let her explore the city streets. It was a dangerous idea to wander the streets of Magaravia at this late hour, especially since Aleena was next in line to the throne and Tanya had a bounty on her head. However, Ezra agreed to the proposition and promised to give her a tour of the city since it would allow them to win her trust.Setting the Wind Rider down on the roof of the mansion in Verdant Gardens, Ezra and Tanya escorted Aleena through the estate and hailed a carriage to take them across the city.Since it was past midnight, most of the people were fast asleep in their beds, but Aleena’s escape had put the guards on high alert. The Longmans were prowling the streets at every turn, and the riflemen from the city guards were scouring the alleys and knocking on every tavern door to find the culprit

It was just as Tanya had feared. Aleena being a naïve young princess had fallen for a simple damsel trap and walked right into an ambush. And the worst part was Ashton Alley was the most avoided part of the city and the guards would not even think to look for her over here.Ezra knew the assailants would not harm Aleena if they discovered she was the princess of Magaravia. Her royal blood would help her squirm out of trouble since they could leverage her and gain something far more valuable from the king in return. However, Ezra still had no clue whether these six women were working alone or if they were part of a larger criminal organization.“Who are you?” Ezra asked. “Are you not afraid Madam Moonfrey might string you up if she found out you were robbing nobles right under her nose?”The oldest in the group chuckled at his words. “Do you think our dear madam would punish us for helping her? If you know Madam Moonfrey then you must also know how she restocks her supplies.”Ezra grinn

Ezra kept watch as Tanya opened a teleportation portal and escorted the princess back to the safety of her royal chamber. Once the portal closed, Ezra quickly barred the front door with a wooden table and set to work, searching the hideout. The shabby walls of the dilapidated building seemed to reflect the dire poverty of those unfortunate few who had been destined to live inconsequential lives amidst the squalor of the largest slum in Valaria.Judging by the creaking floorboards and the cracked ceiling, Ezra could tell that this place was used as a temporary hideout since it looked completely inconspicuous and barely attracted any attention. However, since this place was frequented by so many members of the Bleeding Roses, he was confident of finding clues if he looked around.“You can try interrogating these women when they return to their senses,” Marlin advised while Ezra gathered the unconscious assailants and tied their hands and feet together, securing them to a wooden table in

When Ezra had set out with Tanya, he had plenty of things on his mind, but running into the Bleeding Roses was something completely unexpected. It was as if fate had guided him to this hideout and pointed him in the right direction. The letter Ezra had retrieved from Madam Moonfrey hinted at a strong connection between the Bleeding Roses and the loyalists. However, the elusive noble at the helm of affairs still remained a mystery along with his secret plans. But now that Ezra had found out about the prostitution racket, he could feel he was close to unraveling their secrets. The token Ezra had just pocketed was marked with the initials L.H. and had the numbers 0230 hyphenated with it. Together, they identified the name of the customer as well as the appointed time.Ezra pulled out his silver pocket watch and glanced at the time. The cloaking spell kept him safe from watchful eyes as he walked down the narrow corridor flanked by rooms on each side.Ezra could hear muffled moans and peals of ecstatic laughter coming from the adjoining rooms. They were occasionally interspersed with heavy groans and excited shouts. He could tell the pleasure house had plenty of other customers tonight. As Ezra continued walking down the corridor, one thing puzzled him. He could not understand why Madam Moonfrey would allow a young vice lieutenant to have fun with her girls. His thoughts went back to that day when she had caught a guard collecting bribes from the poor folk of Ashton Alley and given him a sound thrashing.Ezra wondered if Holmes was the only city guard who had been invited to the pleasure house or if there were others like him. The conversation between Eva and the captain of the City Guards made it perfectly clear that Duke Carrington was no longer loyal to King Reginald, and his show of allegiance to the throne was only an act to fool the other nobles. However, the evidence was still too inconclusive for Ezra to suspect the other loyalists. It remained uncertain whether Marquis Desmond and his men were being manipulated by the duke or if they too were involved in the whole conspiracy.Ezra knew he could not trust the loyalists, but the stakes just went up as he discovered Duke Carrington was using Madam Moonfrey’s connections to buy the City Guards. As Ezra continued eavesdropping, the conversation became more interesting. So far, he had only figured out a part of the duke’s plans, but Eva spilled the remaining details in no time.“Our most honored patron, Duke Carrington, has everything planned to the letter. It was my fault for allowing him to lead the charge all alone,” Marquis Desmond responded, his eyes still glued to the bloodstained patch of withered grass where his friend had breathed his last.“They even swallowed the bodies,” one of the paladins mumbled anxiously. The fear soon spread through their ranks, and the rest of the troops became increasingly agitate

  • Bloodbath on the battlefield

Corrupted Slashers stood at the top of the necrophagic hierarchy, and despite being similar to ghouls, they were driven by wild hunger and often could not differentiate between friends and foes.A single Slasher could slaughter an entire village, and only trained Gunners could handle a Slasher prowling among a pack of ghouls. However, these undead monstrosities were rarely found in the open and disliked hunting in groups.Strangely enough, Marquis Desmond could already count fifteen Slashers hiding in the shadows. It was a bizarre occurrence, one that posed a bigger threat than a horde of ghouls."There is too many of them," Marquis Sullivan whispered, furrowing his brow. "They must have been summoned by that necromancer to guard this valley.""Well, Lady Aurelia did say it wasn't going to be a walk in the park," Marquis Desmond responded.Count Gressil, being the most experienced Gunner, rode to the frontlines and prepared to engage the enemy head-on.“I can handle these bastards. The craggy mountains flanking their path watched on like ancient guardians, their ominous cliffs darkening the skyline. The arid path running down the middle was wide enough for troops to pass unhindered, but there was always the danger of being ambushed from the cliffs above. Count Gressil had known this rugged terrain for decades and was no stranger to such tricks. He could sense that the eerie silence pervading the darkness was merely the calm before the storm, and it kept him on his toes.“Never thought I would have to march on Ignar as a foe,” Marquis Sullivan was the first to speak, breathing some comfort into the tense atmosphere. His eyes scanned the cliffs as he continued riding. “I sure am glad we are not fighting elves. Their archers would have picked us off like fish in a barrel from up there.”“We still are sitting ducks until we cross this valley,” Count Gressil r

However, Lorelai’s blood magic had brought the city to its knees in one fell swoop.Despite her unconventional methods, she had succeeded far beyond Malodor’s wildest expectations, and now this great city once known for its values of chivalry and justice was wallowing in darkness, its walls and towers stained with the blood of the innocent.Inside the grand hall of Bloodflame Castle, Lorelai was seated on a bed of blood orchids, surrounded by nine pregnant women bound in dark vines.A clay pot in the middle of the room was gradually filling with bloo

Led by Sir Galahar and his Royal Gunners, the Imperial army had finally arrived at Racinta. The ruined city looked inhospitable, much like the rest of the barren lands around it, but it was much safer to be camping inside Racinta, than resting in the open while the undead were howling in the dark. The dome of holy light shielding the ruined village kept the shadows at bay and allowed the soldiers to finally catch their breaths. They had been marching for two hours now, and even the horses looked tired. But Aurelia knew they had to get moving as soon as possible, or Lorelai could use her blood magic to wreak havoc on them.As the soldiers secured the village and gathered in the middle, Count Gressil lit a bonfire and ordered the men to drink up and recheck their gear.Meanwhile, Sir Galahar instructed two of his most trusted Royal Guards to scout the way ahead and scope out Ignar f

  • Dead men tell no lies

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. • Malodor's Fall

A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. Each second he held onto the blade it continued draining a portion of his magic power, draining his energy at an alarming rate.Fortunately, Ezra's passive magic regen

The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is thi

But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding?
