Ezra felt like he simply could not avoid getting involved with the deities no matter how hard he tried. It was as if they were pulling the strings of fate from above, and he was being forced to obey like a puppet.

Every choice and every secret led him to one shrine or another and there he would inevitably find himself entangled in the net of fate.

Although Ezra still had his doubts about the robed one standing before him, there was no way for him to be sure he was telling the truth.

“How do I know you’re not lying?” he asked. “The God of Magic does not have any physical form. Those devoted to him merely worship the elements and pray to the sacred arcane crafts.”

Oferion smiled and replied in a soft voice, “You are as skeptical and inquisitive as your mother. I like that in a child. It often leads to a more thorough judgment and a more well-rounded character.”

“You said you knew my mother.” Ezra paused midway before adding. “You said her name was Alantra Fien, but I think you don’t kn

The burden of truth was too heavy for Ezra to bear. He had come here hoping to seek answers and rediscover his past, but Oferion’s revelation only added to his mental trauma.“I…am not the son of a crazed murderer! I cannot be!” Ezra denounced, clenching his fist.Oferion however, remained calm and replied in a gentle voice, “Your father already paid for his crimes. And you forget that you also have the blood of one of the bravest elves running through your veins.”“I don’t believe you. If my mother was an elf, why don’t I look like her?” he asked. It was true that Ezra looked like a perfect human and had no features that could liken him to any kind of elf. But Oferion knew something that he did not.“How kind do you think fate would have been to you if you looked like a dark elf? Do you think the Romanovs would still have adopted and accepted you as one of their own?” Oferion sighed and shook his head. “No, my dear boy. They would have either left you to die out here or fed you to the

Oferion approached Ezra and tapped on his chest with the tip of his staff. The gem on top of the staff emitted a bright blue light which spread across Ezra’s skin and gently entered his body.Ezra felt a gentle warmth seeping into his chest and gradually spreading all across his body. His eyes blazed with azure fire, and the tips of his fingers started glowing as pure magic energy rippled on the surface of his palms.“I grant you the power which rightfully belongs to you. The wooden beams supporting the roof of the monastery crackled and snapped like twigs as the flames spread across the room. As the fire bolts kept raining upon the building, it quickly turned into a pyre, with smoke billowing out the hole in its ceiling like a chimney.Ezra realized that if he stayed inside this building even a minute longer, the whole structure would collapse on his head and bury him alive. He could already feel the heat from the flames raging around him, and the smoke made it extremely difficult to see anything.Tying his silk kerchief around his mouth, Ezra took a deep breath and touched his Lunar Howl pendant. “Summon Spectral Companion!”The spectral white wolf leaped out of the pendant and howled. Hearing the ferocious predator’s hunting cry, the Centaur Warriors accompanying the Brutes scampered away in fear. However, the four Brutes attacking the monastery held their ground. Since they were high-level humanoid hybrids, they were extremely resistant to intimidat

Ezra was surprised by this unexpected notification. Silencing wards were usually deployed by mages and adventurers to block teleportation spells and prevent sneaky enemies from dashing from one location to another by using their agility skills. However, Centaurs had never been known to be magic users. If anything, they despised magic due to their past encounters with human sorcerers. “Who the hell is using a silencing ward here?” Ezra looked around him, unsure who else was trying to hunt him down.Oferion’s monastery had already burned down, and there were no other safe havens in the Starlight Forest. Ezra’s only option now was to keep moving and get back on the road as soon as possible.Keeping his Reflexive Armor active, Ezra equipped his enchanted revolvers and carefully made his way through the forest. The Centaurs lurking nearby had their eyes glued on him, but they weren’t too keen on attacking him abruptly since their arrows and bolts had already failed to get through his magic

As the dark fog wafted in Ezra’s direction, the veins on his arms turned black and his skin changed from peachy white to stony gray. His lower body gradually became numb and after a while, he could barely feel his legs.“What is with this fog?” Ezra had never experienced anything like this before and it made him anxious and uncertain.Just then, his system panel flashed open, displaying a terrible status effect.[Warning: Lethal proximity to Dark Fog.][Necrotic Rot contracted!][Skin and flesh decay accelerated by 100%.][Step out of the fog to slow the decay.]“Necrotic Rot? As far as he knew only necrophages and necromancers could inflict Necrotic Rot.But there was no way the undead had raided this forest or else the Centaurs would not have survived the onslaught. What was even more shocking was the presence of a Centaur Shaman in their midst since Centaurs despised magic and were amon

When Ezra had received the notification about the Centaurs, he expected to face a horde of archers and heavy melee attackers. But the Shaman threw all his plans and stratagems out the window. Not only was the Shaman capable of casting minor hexes and curses, but also knew how to effectively deploy wards. And to make matters even worse, this Centaur had pledged his allegiance to Zepheroth which granted him the power of raising the dead with his dark magic.Hearing the guttural grunts of the resurrected Brutes, Ezra turned around. The resurrected Centaur Brutes looked even more formidable in death. Their eyes had turned pitch black, and their battle axes were enveloped in darkness. The Shaman’s dark spell had not only raised them from the dead but imbued them with dark magic. Their hides had turned mottled gray, and dirty black veins had popped up on their arms and necks, making them look like diseased abominations.Ezra downed a magic restoration potion and reloaded his revolvers with

Ezra felt a strange restlessness in his heart as he stared at the wooden totem erected in the middle of the settlement. Even though he had killed the Shaman, he could feel an evil presence lingering in the dark. With the Shaman dead, the dark fog gradually dispersed, and the moon cast its pale glow upon the forest, illuminating the dense undergrowth and pushing back the shadows.Ezra gulped the last healing potion in his inventory to slow the spread of the necrotic rot, but it did little to reverse the damage which had already taken place. His flesh had turned squishy, and his skin dry and flaky. “God, that stinks!” He scrunched his nose as the smell of rotten flesh wafted up his nostrils.Bruised and battered, Ezra looked like he had crawled right out of a nightmare. Even his hair was starting to fall off, and the veins on his arms had turned sickly black. Any sensible person would have hurried out of the forest, but Ezra felt drawn toward the wooden totem before him. It was a stran

The Romanov mansion was unusually quiet this time as Lord Sebastian had ordered all the maids and attendants to take the day off. Only a few guards were asked to stay behind along with a single butler. As Lord Sebastian led Ezra and Aurelia to his study, Ezra could not help but wonder why the house seemed so quiet.“Where is everyone else?” he asked, looking around.“I gave them a day off. They have been working quite hard all year round and I thought it would be nice for them to spend some time with their families,” Lord Sebastian replied, walking into the room with his hands behind his back.“But they do get plenty of leaves all year round. It’s not like they work the whole week,” Ezra replied, unable to understand the reason behind such a decision.Aurelia, however, had already untied the knots. “You see, brother, the people of Aranor have been on edge ever since they heard about the Dewdale infestation. Many of them had relatives living in the village. The commoners are starting to

He should have just taken the hint and stepped down while he had the chance. It would have certainly saved us all the trouble of killing him.”Those cruel words stung Ezra’s heart. Once again, he was reminded of that fateful day when he had lost everything. But instead of trying to lash out or curse Lester, he remained as calm as a monk.“My father trusted you. We thought you actually cared about the people of Aranor. Outside the walls of Stonewell, the Imperial Army was nearly spent from the endless fighting. The ghouls and resurrected skeletons kept coming even as the soldiers killed them in hundreds. “I don’t think we can hold them back much longer,” Marquis Desmond relayed in his hoarse voice, his throat sore from shouting commands and organizing his troops. “These things just keep coming. There is no end to their numbers.”“Don’t give up just yet. Ezra needs us to hold the line and keep them distracted,” Aurelia replied, firing a firebolt from her musket. It burned through five packs of ghouls and cleared a path to the Infernal Gates. “Those Lich Kings are doing all the summoning. If we kill them, there will be no one left to raise the dead again.”“The problem is getting close to them,” Count Gressil said, riding down from the frontlines. “We tried shooting at them, but they are protected by unholy barriers. However, the Shadow Demon blocking his path presented a whole different challenge. To make matters worse, Vorus had already enlisted the help of a dozen more cultists to empower his spell and prevent the dark barrier from shrinking further. Now, even with one of the dark towers disabled, the spell’s influence continued growing stronger by the minute.Ezra could feel his muscles turning stiff as the decaying influence of the dark spell slowly sapped his strength, wreaking havoc on his body. The Shadow Demon noticed Ezra’s hands trembling as he leveled Lord Sebastian’s enchanted musket against his shoulder and took aim. A ring of blue light appeared in front of the barrel, and as Ezra pulled the trigger, a bolt of forked lightning erupted from his rifle. It crackled through the air and zapped the Shadow Demon, bu

  • Rotting away

Destroying the tainted crystal disabled the dark tower, severing its link from Vorus. With just two dark towers empowering his spell, the dark barrier shrunk back to the walls of Stonewell, weakening in intensity.Ezra breathed a sigh of relief as the decay slowed down, giving him just enough time to drink another Rapid Rejuvenation potion.Although it wasn’t a permanent solution, the magic brew helped Ezra buy just a little more time for himself.“One down. Two to go.” As Ezra looked outside, the shrieking of wyverns alerted him. The dark ones had heard the explosion and were now circling the skies around the tower.Flying out of there was only going to land Ezra in more trouble, so instead of taking the quick way out, he jumped down onto a broken ledge and rolled onto the rubble to cushion his fall.It wasn’t the smoothest path, and it tore Ezra’s jacket and bruised his legs, but he managed to get out of the tower before the necro bats swarmed in through the hole in the wall.Ezra’s

The Imperial Army fighting outside was forced to back away and adopt a more defensive approach as the dark barrier expanded, engulfing a good quarter of the vast plains.Even the elves under Flavius’ command ran back to escape the effects of the spell.Ezra, however, had no choice but to push through the city while struggling with the constant life drain. Every second he spent inside the dark barrier leeched an hour from his life, making him age unnaturally.Although Ezra had only been inside Stonewell for a couple of minutes, he could already feel his limbs growing stiff and his skin turning wrinkly and soft.“Why don’t you just attack and kill Vorus directly? Why go through all the trouble of sabotaging the dark towers and

  • Rot and Decay

Ezra moved like a shadow, his boots kissing the cobbled road noiselessly as he sneaked up to the walls of Stonewell. A barred iron gate guarded by Elite Gunners obstructed his path while an army of Skeletal Archers kept watch from the battlements above.Even though the night was blindingly dark, the faint light from the spectral lamps hanging from the wall flickered in the soft-dying wind, illuminating the city in an eerie glow.In the past, a traveler could hear the grinding of factory gears and the crackling flames of the blazing furnace even from outside the gate, but now this once bustling city had fallen into a deathly slumber. The only sounds that reached Ezra’s ears were the wailing of banshees and the distant howls of feral ghouls. No living creature could survive within the walls of Stonewell while the dark barrier was active, yet Ezra was puzzled to see two human Gunners guarding the gate.“This doesn’t make any sense.
