Chapter 5: Pain

"Gentlemen," Mike said, pulling out their glasses.

"From now until the end of this mission. You will be working with Alex Benjamin. This mission is to secure the Rocky City Housing Project. This is Alex Benjamin, he will be your new boss. In descending order, you may introduce yourself to him." Mike spoke while Alex was stunned by what was happening.

"My name is Lincoln Kelly and I work as an urban designer." The first man in the black suit on the left said to Alex, but before he could finish, Mike cut him off.

"Kelly has been named Europe's top urban designer for the past decade. He will report directly to you." Mike said.

"Yes, sir. You can call me Kelly, sir." Kelly spoke to Alex as he took a step back. The next person took a step forward.

"Adrew Watts is a recent architecture graduate with honors from Rocky City State University. He broke the school record by receiving nine of the ten available awards." Mike spoke before Adrew began.

"I'm an architect specializing in green design. According to my mentor, everything is renewable. You can call me Watt's boss." With a bow and a step back, Adrew said to Watt.

"And this is Elivina Vickery, a certified European interior designer. For the past six years, her work has been named best interior designer," Mike said.

"Actually, it has been seven years, including the most recent award. I will be at your disposal, boss. You can call me Vicky." With a bow, Elina Vickery told Alex.

"Your job is to present a quality project and submit it for the Rocky City Government Housing Project, which closes tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. I believe that with Alex as the leader, this team has already won." Mike told them as they boarded another bus outside the hospital.

They had to come up with a project proposal because they were running out of time.

Rocky City was home to a well-known mining company called Underground Mineshaft, which had received a five-star rating. Alex knew that this was the ninth year in a row that the company had been recognized as the best in mining. Everyone in Rocky City knows about Mineshaft.

They arrived at Mineshaft, and because Alex was not an employee of the organization, he had to check in at the security desk, even though his colleagues had a card that they swiped in front of the monitor. Alex knew it was protocol to check in at the security desk.

Alex told his team, "Meet me in the lobby. He quickly provided the necessary information at the security checkpoint and tried to walk in.

"Hey, hey, hey, you there! Who gave you permission to just walk in like that? And where do you think you're going? You are not welcome in this company because people of your social status are not tolerated here. You should either call to tell the person you are here to see or leave through that exit door." Alex was reprimanded by the security guard who prevented him from leaving the building.

Alex's expression changed as he frowned at the security guards.

"My colleagues just came in before me, and since I didn't have a card, I'm here to fill in my details." Alex apologized to the security guard.

"You're here when the rest of your crew is inside. Don't think you can get away with this! Who are you meeting?!" The guard yelled.

"Mike, your manager." Alex replied, but the security guards just sneered at him.

"Don't be ridiculous. You dress like a beggar. How did someone as worthless as you manage to get an appointment? You are not allowed to come in a second time."

The security guard was strangely angry. He thought that even if Alex is here to start a job, it must be one that requires him to clean the bathroom. He didn't trust a word Alex said.

Just then, Kelly, concerned that Alex was taking too long, approached the security post. After hearing the commotion, she arrived with a hostile expression on her face.

"What the hell is going on?" Kelly asked the security guard.

"I asked this man that he was not allowed in, that he needed to call the person down, but he refused to do so.  He tried to force his way into the organization." The security guard said to Kelly in an attempt to make Alex look guilty.

"Stop!"  Kelly yelled at the guard, who turned around to see Kelly with an angry expression on her face.

"Sorry madam." The guard quickly apologized to Kelly.

"What are you doing, this is my new employer. Who gave you permission to be so disrespectful?" Kelly glared at the guard with a stony expression.

The guard answered Kelly in a hushed tone and asked her, "Madam, are you mistaken, how can he be your employer?"

Kelly replied, "Listen and listen well; he is my new employer and you will give him the optimum respect required. She turned to Alex, "I really must apologize, sir. "

The security guard noticed how respectful Kelly was to Alex and said, "I had no idea...I was too blind to see you for who you are."

"Respecting people is one of your most important jobs and you're obviously not doing it well." Alex said, "I hope you have learned." He didn't look back and followed Mike into the company.

After 28 hours of work, the Alex team completed the project and prepared it for submission. The next day before the deadline, Alex's team had completed and submitted the contract.

Suddenly his phone rang.

"The attending physician would like Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin to come to her office as soon as possible. "The secretary said. This almost immediately piqued Alex's curiosity. He reasoned that his father had a chance of being cured. As he rushed to the hospital, Alex became increasingly anxious about what was going on.

A beautiful blonde doctor dressed in white entered the office shortly after they sat down and addressed Alex and his wife.

"We made every effort, but due to the delay in the surgery, although when I checked on him this morning, he seemed to be doing well in therapy and asked about Alex and Marry. Overall, he seemed happy." Dr. Sophie told Alex and Marry.

Mary exclaimed "Ahh" as she watched Dr. Sophie speak.

"Mr. Benjamin experienced convulsions as he struggled to regain his ability to breathe after the janitor sounded the alarm. We tried everything we could to save him, but it was too late and we lost Mr. Benjamin.

"It can't be true, Doctor, please tell me that my father is in good health. He'll be fine when he wakes up this morning, that's what the second doctor said." He sobbed in response to the doctor's question.

"Please, we're very sorry for your loss; we did everything we could to save his life. We need you to sign some papers while we make the necessary arrangements. Again, I am sorry for your family's loss." Doctor Sophie's voice was clinical.

"Beep" Alex took out his phone as it brought him back to reality.

"Congratulations, Lioness Arts has been awarded the Rock City Urban Housing Project. I must say, this is an outstanding achievement on your part. You must be a genius to accomplish this in such a short time. Exceptionally," Kelly sounded quite excited over the phone.

"What are you doing? I have to pick you up so we can sign the document at the Ministry." Kelly continued.

"I'm at Rocky City Hospital and my father is dead," Alex said sadly over the phone speaker.
