Reed had no means of transport, so he used the car of the killers, driving it at top speed to Mike's apartment building without bothering about the dead bodies.
It was simple logic. No gangster wanted to be caught with his shit flying about especially where the police were concerned, so they could clean up his mess quickly before the cops caught wind of it
Reed parked carelessly in front of the building, rushing out with his heart in his throat as he barged in without identification.
The security guards went on alert instantly and tried to stop him
“Hey, where do you think you're going?” the fat one yelled, running up to him.
Closing his eyes in annoyance, Reed turned around to set his leg so the man fell to the ground, and to his companion, one punch to the face was lit.
Conscious of the ticking clock, Reed ran up the stairs until he got to apartment 17.
One knock and a minute later, the door is swung inward to reveal his daughter who gaped at him in disbelief
“Dad!” She exclaimed, running towards him…
Suddenly, everything felt right again in his world as he knelt to wrap his hands around her
They hugged for a couple of minutes, Reed lost in the euphoria of finally having his daughter in his arms again
He pulled back, framing her face. “Baby, I need you to listen to me. Go into your room and pack what you need to, we need to leave.”
“Why, Daddy?” Mandy questioned but still went into her room to pack and Reed followed her, nervously glancing at the door.
“I'll explain while you pack, honey.” He tells her when she stood in the middle of the room waiting for him to speak. “Do you remember Mom's new boyfriend, Mike?”
He waited for her to nod before he went on. “He’s a bad person, honey and he's into bad things like drugs. The police are after him which is why we need to leave.”
Mandy's face took on a grave look while she nodded and proceeded to pack up even more quickly.
Reed wandered out to the living room to check his surroundings for signs of suspicious behaviors, then checked his guns, and bullets, making sure to turn on the safety in case of any surprises.
Mandy finished in less than ten minutes.
Hand in hand, they were about to leave when the door burst open and Mike came in, leveling a gun at Reed.
“You! Fucking down on your knees!” Mike yelled.
Reed was stuck in this situation but he would never give in like this.
Reed took note of how Mike was holding his gun, remembering how his teacher drilled the proper handling of a gun into Reed's psyche.
Reed learned how to draw a gun and shoot from a Western sharpshooter, the best in the whole of the County.
But first…
Turning his head to the side, he yelled to Mandy. “Go hide, baby! Either in the attic or in your room, Run!”
“Shut the fuck up!” Mike shouted, waving the gun at Reed but he didn't come any closer.
Mandy obeys her father's command, running down to the attic but she hid in such a way that she could still observe what was going on with her father.
Reed starred Mike down, who looked content to hold Reed at gunpoint without doing anything.
“If you want to do this right, the least you could do is throw me a rope, ordering me to tie myself up if you were too scared to approach me. We need to leave, like ASAP!”
“And why would I do that?” Mike cocked his head to the side, trying to figure Reed out. Left to him, he was content waiting here till his boss came around and handled things from here.
“Oh, you don't know.” Reed shook his head. “I knocked out the security guard when I got in, and I'm sure that he must have woken up by now and called the police. Any time soon, they'll come barging through that door. Do you want to be here when that happens?”
Reed saw the exact moment Mike took in the information.
Panic lit up his pale eyes, and they started to shift.
Mike grew nervous and worried about the imminent arrival of the cops who would no doubt rain hell on him and his boss.
“Fine, I'll get the stupid rope, just don't move!” Mike stuttered out.
Mike raised the gun higher on Reed while he went about the apparent, searching for a piece of rope or something to bind Reed's hands with while trying to keep an eye on him.
Reed held still, waiting for that moment, his gun digging into the small of his back.
He knew the moment Mike located a piece of necktie under a couch. Mike's focus shifted, giving him the perfect opportunity.
So fast that Mike didn't even see it coming, Reed drew his gun from the back of his pants, aiming at Mike's wrist which held his gun, and fired.
It was a perfect shot, as it hit Mike's hand and the pain made him drop the gun quickly but not before his finger grazed the trigger letting out a bullet.
The bullet grazed Reed's shoulder, making him clench his teeth from the pain but the overall safety of his daughter trumped anything so he immediately leaped to his feet.
Kicking aside Mike's gun, he grabbed the tie securing it around Mike's body.
“Mandy, darling, you can come out now!” He yelled.
Holding his daughter's hand with one hand, and her bag in the other, they made their way out of the apartment, down to the lobby.
Luckily, the guards were still down but one was already twitching, about to wake up.
There's no telling what could happen if he woke up and caught them leaving.
“Go ahead baby, I'll meet you out front.”
He says to Mandy, waiting until she's out of earshot before he punches the guard again, effectively knocking him out forthe second time.
Then he walked out to the front.
Reed drove carefully on the streets, staring out the window and at the rearview mirror for signs of approaching cars.He needed to get Mandy somewhere safe before those men found him again. The safehouse…Reed used to have many safe houses scattered around the city, but in his state of panic, the only one he could remember now was the one he built when he used to lead the Scavengers, creating a haven for them.He debated driving over to that place but hesitated, not sure if it was still safe to use.Nonetheless, Reed drove over to the nearest safehouse whose address was stuck in his memory.Only to drive into the parking lot and find out that the shop that was used as a shelter above the safehouse had been turned into a pub.Fuck!“Hey, Mandy, wake up!” He gently shook his daughter awake.Tired, blue eyes fluttered open as she rolled around on the seat.Reed got down, bending so he could scoop her up into his arms but Mandy wriggled, wanting to be let down.As they walked into the pub
Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers. It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame. Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”Her Dad wasn't so
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
Margie Blackwater stormed into Walker Rhomes' lavish office, her eyes blazing with anger. The room was adorned with opulent furniture and expensive artwork, a stark contrast to the fury radiating from Margie. Walker, a tall and imposing figure, sat behind his mahogany desk, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he observed her entrance."Come in, come in, Margie," Walker beckoned, his voice dripping with false charm. He rose from his seat and approached her, his eyes never leaving her face. But Margie was having none of it. She shrugged off his outstretched hands, her voice laced with frustration and determination."You promised, Walker," she seethed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You promised that if I gave you the evidence I had on you, you would leave my son and his daughter alone. But you are still having your men hunt my son. This isn't the deal we had."Walker's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He circled his desk, leaning aga
Mike's head throbbed as he slowly regained consciousness. The room spun around him, and he struggled to focus his blurry vision. With a groan, he pushed himself up, his body aching from the impact that had knocked him out."Shit," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. Panic surged through him as he scanned the room, his eyes widening in disbelief. Mandy was nowhere to be seen, and neither was Reed. Dread settled in his chest like a heavy weight as he realized the gravity of the situation. He had failed. Walker would be furious.Mike's mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened. He had been so close to finishing Reed off, but something had gone wrong. He cursed himself for letting his guard down, for underestimating the danger that Reed posed. Now, not only had he lost his chance to eliminate the threat, but Mandy was missing too.Fear gnawed at his insides as he stumbled to his feet, his legs wobbly and weak. He knew he had to act quickly. Walker wouldn't tolerate failu
Kayla sat in the newly acquired apartment that Mike had arranged for her. As she settled in, her phone rang, and it was Mike on the other end. He requested Reed's number from her, prompting Kayla to question his intentions. "What do you want with it?" she asked curiously. Mike replied, "Walker wants to have a word with him." Curiosity piqued, Kayla hesitated for a moment before agreeing. "Alright, hold on. Let me send it to you," she said, quickly typing out Reed's number and sending it to Mike. As she waited for an explanation, she couldn't help but wonder what was going on. "What's happening? Is everything alright?" she inquired, concern evident in her voice.Mike sighed on the other end of the line, his voice filled with frustration. "Nah, getting rid of Reed is proving to be more difficult than we initially thought. But now the boss has found a leverage on him," he revealed, his words hinting at a complicated situation. After Kayla angrily dropped her phone, frustration and anger
Reed knew he was treading on dangerous ground, but he had no choice. The possibility of running into an ambush loomed over him, but he had to gather information. Joyce Palmer was his best bet. She had dealt with Walker Homes before, and Reed hoped she could shed some light on the situation. With a determined resolve, Reed got into his car and started the engine. As he drove through the dimly lit streets, Reed's mind raced with thoughts of his mother's safety. He contemplated various strategies, considering every possible scenario that could unfold. He knew he had to be prepared for the worst, but his heart ached at the thought of his mother being in danger. He couldn't bear the thought of losing her. Finally, Reed arrived at Joyce Palmer's home. He parked his car and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew he had to be cautious, as danger could be lurking around any corner. Reed approached the front door and knocked, but there was no response. He tried again, this tim
