Reed watched Mike receive a phone call, moving farther away so that Reed wouldn't listen in to his conversation.
Reed moved around as if trying to pick things up while craning his ears.
Mike went white fast, making Reed wonder what was going on, that was when his eyes snagged on the suit Mike had on.
Reed's eyes widened when he placed the Brioni custom-made suit.
That suit costs thousands of dollars! He would know because back then when he used to profile high-value clients, most of them had a Brioni suit in their collection.
“How the fuck was Mike able to afford that on a salesman's salary?”
Reed carefully cataloged everything Mike was putting on for his birthday dinner while he talked and summed the total up to be $3-5k.
Reed immediately did some digging and found Mike's apartment, which was a very luxurious building on State Avenue…he was still working at the car wash.
Mike was no big fish, born into a wealthy family so the logical explanation was…the owner of the car wash
He was a drug dealer, meaning Mike had to be doing some scheming on the side to get his cut
Reed watched him leave in a hurry, obviously to do his boss's bidding, feeling amused that this was the kind of person his wife would buy a $700k watch for.
Then again, she could already be in jail so it wasn't his business anymore.
But then worry sank in, the longer he thought about it.
Mandy was stuck in the home of a drug dealer and that would put her in harm's way.
Reed was about to leave when suddenly Mike appeared, making him turn around so his back was to the entrance.
He was holding out something.
“I wanted to give this to you.” Mike was handing over the box that contained the watch Kayla bought.
“Why?” Reed didn't take the box from him, feeling in his gut that something was off.
Mike fidgeted, trying to play it off as worried. “I don't want anything to happen to Kayla so I figured that I would return it in hopes that…you could drop the case since you had your money back.”
Reed sensed the lie. Mike didn't give two shits if Kayla went to jail or not. This had to be about something else…
His instincts told him something felt off, especially when he saw Mike repeatedly glance over his shoulder like he was waiting for something
Reed reached out to take the watch when Mike's eyes flickered and he drew back.
“Whatever, later man,” Mike called out in a rush, leaving as quickly as he came
Reed heard the sound of tires on gravel and realized that he had a visitor, which was why Mike took off
He turned around, too slow if he might add, and saw two fists heading straight for his skull
Years of training kicked in immediately, pushing aside the shock and he ducked to avoid the punches
Two, tall mean-looking men dressed in suits and clean-shaven heads came at him with fists swinging, aiming for his skull.
He ducked to avoid a blow to the face, watching the guy's expressions so he could predict their movements.
He narrowly escaped the first one as it is.
Reed grabbed the first man's hand, then struck the other man with his free hand.
The force Reed used was more than he expected, causing a fracture on the other guy's leg Reed hit him, making him fall to the floor
Twisting the other man's hand in his hold, Reed hit him on the left-hand side, above his ribs while simultaneously twisting back his hands and knees
The first guy crumpled to the floor with a cry of pain, openly sobbing.
It wasn't over yet though.
The second guy clutched his left side where Reed had hit him, moving quickly so he could reach for his pistol tucked into his back pocket.
Reed caught the guy's movement and ran forward to stop him.
The man had already raised his hand, but Reed was faster than him, wrapping his fingers tight around the guy's hand and raising it
In the guy's panic mode, he squeezed the trigger firing off several bullets into the sky.
Reed, in anger, struck the man's throat hitting a vital vein which instantly led to his death.
Wrenching the gun out of the man's grip, Reed walked over to the first guy who was whimpering on the floor.
His eyes widened in fear when he saw Reed approach and started to beg. Reed was deaf to his pleading, looking him in the eyes while he aimed
Two shots rang off, bullets embedded in the man's heart and head respectively.
Tucking the gun into his waistband, Reed ran off to check the car the men drove in, searching for any sign of guns or things that could implicate him.
Finding none, Reed searched around for Mike.
Judging from his behavior, that slimy weasel would have known that the killers were on their way and he drew Reed into a conversation to buy time, stalling him.
Reed checked the back entrance and doors for any possible place that Mike could be hiding but found none…
Knowing Mike, there's a possibility he had escaped…heading home.
Which was where his daughter was.
She was stuck in a mine house, just waiting to explode and the innocent kid didn't even know it.
The safety of his child was more important to him than anything else.
So first things first,
Reed needed to figure out how to get into that luxury apartment undetected without raising any alarms…
Just stay safe, Mandy, Daddy's coming.
Reed had no means of transport, so he used the car of the killers, driving it at top speed to Mike's apartment building without bothering about the dead bodies. It was simple logic. No gangster wanted to be caught with his shit flying about especially where the police were concerned, so they could clean up his mess quickly before the cops caught wind of itReed parked carelessly in front of the building, rushing out with his heart in his throat as he barged in without identification. The security guards went on alert instantly and tried to stop him“Hey, where do you think you're going?” the fat one yelled, running up to him.Closing his eyes in annoyance, Reed turned around to set his leg so the man fell to the ground, and to his companion, one punch to the face was lit.Conscious of the ticking clock, Reed ran up the stairs until he got to apartment 17.One knock and a minute later, the door is swung inward to reveal his daughter who gaped at him in disbelief“Dad!” She exclaimed, r
Reed drove carefully on the streets, staring out the window and at the rearview mirror for signs of approaching cars.He needed to get Mandy somewhere safe before those men found him again. The safehouse…Reed used to have many safe houses scattered around the city, but in his state of panic, the only one he could remember now was the one he built when he used to lead the Scavengers, creating a haven for them.He debated driving over to that place but hesitated, not sure if it was still safe to use.Nonetheless, Reed drove over to the nearest safehouse whose address was stuck in his memory.Only to drive into the parking lot and find out that the shop that was used as a shelter above the safehouse had been turned into a pub.Fuck!“Hey, Mandy, wake up!” He gently shook his daughter awake.Tired, blue eyes fluttered open as she rolled around on the seat.Reed got down, bending so he could scoop her up into his arms but Mandy wriggled, wanting to be let down.As they walked into the pub
Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers. It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame. Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”Her Dad wasn't so
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
Margie Blackwater stormed into Walker Rhomes' lavish office, her eyes blazing with anger. The room was adorned with opulent furniture and expensive artwork, a stark contrast to the fury radiating from Margie. Walker, a tall and imposing figure, sat behind his mahogany desk, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he observed her entrance."Come in, come in, Margie," Walker beckoned, his voice dripping with false charm. He rose from his seat and approached her, his eyes never leaving her face. But Margie was having none of it. She shrugged off his outstretched hands, her voice laced with frustration and determination."You promised, Walker," she seethed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You promised that if I gave you the evidence I had on you, you would leave my son and his daughter alone. But you are still having your men hunt my son. This isn't the deal we had."Walker's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He circled his desk, leaning aga
Mike's head throbbed as he slowly regained consciousness. The room spun around him, and he struggled to focus his blurry vision. With a groan, he pushed himself up, his body aching from the impact that had knocked him out."Shit," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. Panic surged through him as he scanned the room, his eyes widening in disbelief. Mandy was nowhere to be seen, and neither was Reed. Dread settled in his chest like a heavy weight as he realized the gravity of the situation. He had failed. Walker would be furious.Mike's mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened. He had been so close to finishing Reed off, but something had gone wrong. He cursed himself for letting his guard down, for underestimating the danger that Reed posed. Now, not only had he lost his chance to eliminate the threat, but Mandy was missing too.Fear gnawed at his insides as he stumbled to his feet, his legs wobbly and weak. He knew he had to act quickly. Walker wouldn't tolerate failu
Kayla sat in the newly acquired apartment that Mike had arranged for her. As she settled in, her phone rang, and it was Mike on the other end. He requested Reed's number from her, prompting Kayla to question his intentions. "What do you want with it?" she asked curiously. Mike replied, "Walker wants to have a word with him." Curiosity piqued, Kayla hesitated for a moment before agreeing. "Alright, hold on. Let me send it to you," she said, quickly typing out Reed's number and sending it to Mike. As she waited for an explanation, she couldn't help but wonder what was going on. "What's happening? Is everything alright?" she inquired, concern evident in her voice.Mike sighed on the other end of the line, his voice filled with frustration. "Nah, getting rid of Reed is proving to be more difficult than we initially thought. But now the boss has found a leverage on him," he revealed, his words hinting at a complicated situation. After Kayla angrily dropped her phone, frustration and anger
