Reed had to make a pit stop at home so he could change into decent clothes that could at least show he belonged in a fancy restaurant.
Upon getting there, he discreetly looked around for his ex wife but couldn't find her.
“Sir, can I help you with something?” A harried-looking waitress tapped her feet impatiently, looking over his shoulder.
Crap
“I…um, I'm meeting someone in there.” The lie rolled smoothly off his tongue, while he pretended to look through his phone for a fake name.
Thankfully, there were a lot of people on the line and the lady couldn't wait for him to figure it out so she just waved him in.
Once he was in, it was easy to spot his stealing wife.
It was Mark's birthday and Kayla was doing some type of grand gesture with her friends and his.
Reed's eyes widened when Kayla whipped out a very expensive box that had a designer watch. He could overhear some of the guests murmur in surprise, saying they didn't think that Kayla had that type of money, after costing they concluded that the watch cost about $700k, approximately the exact amount she stole from him.
Fuck. Me.
He couldn't believe that she would be so impatient to take out that amount of money so she could buy a watch for that douchebag
He couldn't stomach it anymore, watching Kayla lie and scheme her way through.
Reed pushed through the crowd, taking Kayla by surprise
“Kayla? This is why you stole my money?!”
“What money?” She pretended to be clueless
“Oh, don't fuck with me! The money you withdrew from the account to buy this piece of shit a watch!” He yelled
“You've got some guts you know? Coming in here like you own the place!” She scoffed. “If you think I did it, then go to the police!”
Kayla sneered at her pathetic ex-husband and his attempt to disgrace her in public, not knowing it'll backfire on his ass
She knew that he was an ex-convict with no certifiable job and that the only way he could have gotten that huge sum of money was through illegal means, thereby making going to the police pretty hard
Kayla sidled close to her husband and rubbed his chest, not a bit worried about that.
He had close connections to a very powerful family and her gift to him- one which he had always wanted- was her way of securing her position in the family.
Besides, if Reed dared call the police, he would be able to get her out of it
Reed stared Kayla down before he said fuck it!
He dialed 911, reporting the case to the cops.
He heard Kayla gasp in disbelief, shocked that he went through with it.
“Are you fucking insane, what about our daughter?!” Kayla screamed, losing her composure. “I know you're only doing this to get back at me for what I did to you and you want me to follow you to jail but it's not fair!
“You're the one who's meant to be in jail, not me, “ He replied calmly
Ten minutes later, the cops showed up, Reed tabled the matter before them and with a little investigation, they were able to prove that Kayla did swipe the funds from the account
Kayla refused to give up. “Why don't you ask him how he got the money? Did you check his records? If you did, you would find out that he's a bum who just got recently released from jail. So how the fuck does an ex-convict have a million dollars lying around in the bank?!”
Detective Jones, the lead investigator on this, simply tapped on his screen a couple of times before showing it to Kayla.
“The money came into Mr Blackwater's account from a Swiss executor's trust and had already paid the standard high inheritance tax…so his money is legal.
Kayla's mouth dropped open as she wondered how that came to be. She knew all of Reed's relatives and none had that kind of amount!
“Mike, please help me! Don't let them take me away!” She begged
Reed just scoffed at her pathetic plea to a man who didn't even care about her..
He overheard Mike telling a police officer earlier that he knew nothing about what Kayla did. It was quite ironic that she expected so much of him because a year ago, this man was a coward who couldn't tell the truth
Mike only nodded. “Of course, my love I'll get the best lawyers on it right away!”
Reed had to laugh. The way tables turned so quickly was downright hilarious.
Kayla's eyes hardened. “You’re so cruel! Doing all of this just to humiliate me.”
“That's funny because I seem to remember that you're the one that stole here! If you hadn't touched the money, none of this would have happened!” Reed retorted.
Reed watched the police drag Kayla out, thinking about how the court proceedings would go, hopefully, he could get custody of their daughter but first…
He has to take care of the drug dealer situation.
Mike's phone rings and he picks up immediately.
It's his boss.
The same one who funds his lifestyle with money illegally gotten for drug deals.
Mike gulped loudly and picked up the call.
“Mike, listen to me carefully and before you try to deny it, I know what's going on.” Boss dove right in without pleasantries. “Do everything in your power to clear your name with the cops, do not let them dig into your means of income.”
He ended the call. Mike rushed to follow after them to do his boss's bidding.
As soon as Boss ended the call, he got a notification, tipping him off to the actual source of Reed Blackwater's money, and his heartbeat took a nosedive
What if it was someone within the drug cartel who wanted to send him down and employed Reed, using the $ 1 million as hush money?
He stabbed at the intercom, barking into it. “Get me, Milo and James, now!”
Less than a minute later, two of his finest soldiers stormed into his office.
He slid Reed's picture to them. “I need you to find this man, use any means necessary to get him to talk on which evidence he has managed to obtain, and if he doesn't talk…kill him.”
Reed watched Mike receive a phone call, moving farther away so that Reed wouldn't listen in to his conversation.Reed moved around as if trying to pick things up while craning his ears.Mike went white fast, making Reed wonder what was going on, that was when his eyes snagged on the suit Mike had on.Reed's eyes widened when he placed the Brioni custom-made suit. That suit costs thousands of dollars! He would know because back then when he used to profile high-value clients, most of them had a Brioni suit in their collection.“How the fuck was Mike able to afford that on a salesman's salary?”Reed carefully cataloged everything Mike was putting on for his birthday dinner while he talked and summed the total up to be $3-5k.Reed immediately did some digging and found Mike's apartment, which was a very luxurious building on State Avenue…he was still working at the car wash.Mike was no big fish, born into a wealthy family so the logical explanation was…the owner of the car washHe was a
Reed had no means of transport, so he used the car of the killers, driving it at top speed to Mike's apartment building without bothering about the dead bodies. It was simple logic. No gangster wanted to be caught with his shit flying about especially where the police were concerned, so they could clean up his mess quickly before the cops caught wind of itReed parked carelessly in front of the building, rushing out with his heart in his throat as he barged in without identification. The security guards went on alert instantly and tried to stop him“Hey, where do you think you're going?” the fat one yelled, running up to him.Closing his eyes in annoyance, Reed turned around to set his leg so the man fell to the ground, and to his companion, one punch to the face was lit.Conscious of the ticking clock, Reed ran up the stairs until he got to apartment 17.One knock and a minute later, the door is swung inward to reveal his daughter who gaped at him in disbelief“Dad!” She exclaimed, r
Reed drove carefully on the streets, staring out the window and at the rearview mirror for signs of approaching cars.He needed to get Mandy somewhere safe before those men found him again. The safehouse…Reed used to have many safe houses scattered around the city, but in his state of panic, the only one he could remember now was the one he built when he used to lead the Scavengers, creating a haven for them.He debated driving over to that place but hesitated, not sure if it was still safe to use.Nonetheless, Reed drove over to the nearest safehouse whose address was stuck in his memory.Only to drive into the parking lot and find out that the shop that was used as a shelter above the safehouse had been turned into a pub.Fuck!“Hey, Mandy, wake up!” He gently shook his daughter awake.Tired, blue eyes fluttered open as she rolled around on the seat.Reed got down, bending so he could scoop her up into his arms but Mandy wriggled, wanting to be let down.As they walked into the pub
Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers. It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame. Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”Her Dad wasn't so
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
Margie Blackwater stormed into Walker Rhomes' lavish office, her eyes blazing with anger. The room was adorned with opulent furniture and expensive artwork, a stark contrast to the fury radiating from Margie. Walker, a tall and imposing figure, sat behind his mahogany desk, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he observed her entrance."Come in, come in, Margie," Walker beckoned, his voice dripping with false charm. He rose from his seat and approached her, his eyes never leaving her face. But Margie was having none of it. She shrugged off his outstretched hands, her voice laced with frustration and determination."You promised, Walker," she seethed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You promised that if I gave you the evidence I had on you, you would leave my son and his daughter alone. But you are still having your men hunt my son. This isn't the deal we had."Walker's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He circled his desk, leaning aga
Mike's head throbbed as he slowly regained consciousness. The room spun around him, and he struggled to focus his blurry vision. With a groan, he pushed himself up, his body aching from the impact that had knocked him out."Shit," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. Panic surged through him as he scanned the room, his eyes widening in disbelief. Mandy was nowhere to be seen, and neither was Reed. Dread settled in his chest like a heavy weight as he realized the gravity of the situation. He had failed. Walker would be furious.Mike's mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened. He had been so close to finishing Reed off, but something had gone wrong. He cursed himself for letting his guard down, for underestimating the danger that Reed posed. Now, not only had he lost his chance to eliminate the threat, but Mandy was missing too.Fear gnawed at his insides as he stumbled to his feet, his legs wobbly and weak. He knew he had to act quickly. Walker wouldn't tolerate failu
