The lady started to explain. “The owner of the laundry is a drug dealer, the laundry is just a front. The guy is part of a very large trafficking network but from what I hear, he runs this city. My brother Matt was lured into taking drugs, and soon after, he became addicted and my parents had to cart him off to a rehabilitation center when it became too bad.” Moisture gathered at the corners and she angrily swiped it away.
“Matt was a minor, you know.” She tried to explain to him. “And rehab didn't work since there were still drug dealers in there and guess what, they were even more cheaper!”
She stopped talking for a minute, her eyes appearing glassy as she got sucked into her memories.
Reed had to prompt her. “So, what happened?”
“My parents of course went to the cops and reported the whole situation, who then traced it back to Walker but no way to even hurt him or pinpoint it to him.” She scoffed.
Reed patiently waited her out, allowing her to let it all out of her system.
“They were criminals and I couldn't let them get away with it!” She sobbed.
Anna was desperate to get justice for her brother, so much so that she didn't want the asshole laundry owner to get away that she cashed in her tuition fee with the hopes of getting a hitman to take the man down.
She explained all this to the impassive Reed who looked like he couldn't care less if she jumped up a bridge.
“I know I shouldn't… I'm sorry, I…”
Reed sighed internally, wondering how he got into this mess. The lady already looked like she was on the verge of tears.
“It's okay, I understand.” He forced the words out. “The only thing I'll ask for now is an up-front payment of $20000.”
Anna's face fell in relief and she dug her hands into her pocket to bring out the spare cash she had in her pocket and counted it, handing it over.
Reed was mildly surprised that she easily forked the money over so fast, and shook his head at her naivety. Didn't she think?
A wiser person would have been careful not to reveal where the money was hidden because greedy men could overpower her and take the money for himself.
They parted ways soon after and Reed headed over to the hospital to see his mother and pay her bill.
At the reception, he waited patiently by the desk tapping his fingers in anticipation when his phone buzzed twice, alerting him to the sound of a notification.
His eyes widened like saucers when he saw it.
$1,000,000 has been deposited into your account by the Swiss Heritage Trust bank, please check to confirm…
He was equally shocked and perplexed about what happened. The Swiss Heritage Trust is a secure account of a money laundering channel he used back when he was still a Scavenger but it had been a long time since he had control of the account.
Who the hell could it be?
Who did this?
While Reed was busy racking his brain, his phone buzzed again with an unfamiliar number displayed on the phone screen.
At this point, Reed was apprehensive to pick up.
What if this was the person who sent the money?
He jabbed the answer button, placing it on his ear.
Only to be met with no sound, almost like the person on the other end was scared to speak.
Reed waited it out, thinking deeply.
It could be only one other person…his subordinate.
“Have you received the money?” A cold, female voice finally spoke up.
Reed was stumped for a moment because he couldn't place the voice. “Yeah, sure. Thanks…”
Saying thank you to me isn't necessary, everything in this organization should have been yours.” There was a brief pause. “Master, I really hope that…” the woman trailed off, a tremor in her tone.
“Hope that?” He pressed further, hoping to glean a bit of information.
“Nothing.” The woman's voice returned back to normal. “I'm sorry I bothered you but be rest assured everything you have will be safe with me.”
Before he could even say anything else, the woman had hung up.
Reed sighed.
It seemed that in his absence, his subordinates had tried their best to protect the organization.
While overwhelmed, his mind started to churn out ideas. After settling his mother's medical bills, the rest could be used for his daughter's tuition fees.
That was when he remembered…
No, no, no! Please tell me Mecca didn't send it to the Safe Fund account-
Fuck me, she did!
It was an account that Reed and his wife shared, which she also had the passcode.
Hastily, he checked the balance and his heart skipped when he saw that over $700,000 had been removed.
Oh, hell no!
Reed was partially in shock, not believing that his wife would still use his funds even after they were divorced!
Fueled by anger, he waited to clear the remaining of his Mom's debts before storming out of the hospital, in search of Kayla.
It wasn't until he was standing at the bus stop that he remembered he didn't have Kayla's current address.
Reed stood there thinking hard, before settling on the only other person to give him answers.
His daughter…
The line rang for the longest and just when he was about to give up, her beautiful voice came over the phone.
“Hey, sweetie.”
“Dad!” For some reason, the enthusiasm in her voice almost brought tears to his eyes.
“I always knew you were going to call!”
“Really?” He sniffled, trying to act as if he was bawling his eyes out. “Why's that?”
“Because I know you're no lawbreaker or criminal, you're just my Dad!”. His daughter’s words brought so much comfort to him
“Hey, honey, I'm going out for dinner with Mike tonight!” He could hear Kayla's voice in the background. “It's this posh restaurant, Maude, so I might be late coming in! Don't wait up, and use the money on the counter to get food!”
Reed got pissed off at the cavalier way she was treating their daughter.
But first things first…
“I gotta go honey but I'll send some money to you for school okay?” Reed said
She agreed and as soon as he hung up the phone, he transferred the remaining balance to his daughter's account.
With time to kill, Reed changed directions instead of heading home, his pride and curiosity constantly at war.
He headed to the restaurant, Maude, ready to find out what Kayla and that new husband of hers were going to spend his money on.
Reed had to make a pit stop at home so he could change into decent clothes that could at least show he belonged in a fancy restaurant.Upon getting there, he discreetly looked around for his ex wife but couldn't find her.“Sir, can I help you with something?” A harried-looking waitress tapped her feet impatiently, looking over his shoulder.Crap“I…um, I'm meeting someone in there.” The lie rolled smoothly off his tongue, while he pretended to look through his phone for a fake name.Thankfully, there were a lot of people on the line and the lady couldn't wait for him to figure it out so she just waved him in.Once he was in, it was easy to spot his stealing wife.It was Mark's birthday and Kayla was doing some type of grand gesture with her friends and his.Reed's eyes widened when Kayla whipped out a very expensive box that had a designer watch. He could overhear some of the guests murmur in surprise, saying they didn't think that Kayla had that type of money, after costing they conc
Reed watched Mike receive a phone call, moving farther away so that Reed wouldn't listen in to his conversation.Reed moved around as if trying to pick things up while craning his ears.Mike went white fast, making Reed wonder what was going on, that was when his eyes snagged on the suit Mike had on.Reed's eyes widened when he placed the Brioni custom-made suit. That suit costs thousands of dollars! He would know because back then when he used to profile high-value clients, most of them had a Brioni suit in their collection.“How the fuck was Mike able to afford that on a salesman's salary?”Reed carefully cataloged everything Mike was putting on for his birthday dinner while he talked and summed the total up to be $3-5k.Reed immediately did some digging and found Mike's apartment, which was a very luxurious building on State Avenue…he was still working at the car wash.Mike was no big fish, born into a wealthy family so the logical explanation was…the owner of the car washHe was a
Reed had no means of transport, so he used the car of the killers, driving it at top speed to Mike's apartment building without bothering about the dead bodies. It was simple logic. No gangster wanted to be caught with his shit flying about especially where the police were concerned, so they could clean up his mess quickly before the cops caught wind of itReed parked carelessly in front of the building, rushing out with his heart in his throat as he barged in without identification. The security guards went on alert instantly and tried to stop him“Hey, where do you think you're going?” the fat one yelled, running up to him.Closing his eyes in annoyance, Reed turned around to set his leg so the man fell to the ground, and to his companion, one punch to the face was lit.Conscious of the ticking clock, Reed ran up the stairs until he got to apartment 17.One knock and a minute later, the door is swung inward to reveal his daughter who gaped at him in disbelief“Dad!” She exclaimed, r
Reed drove carefully on the streets, staring out the window and at the rearview mirror for signs of approaching cars.He needed to get Mandy somewhere safe before those men found him again. The safehouse…Reed used to have many safe houses scattered around the city, but in his state of panic, the only one he could remember now was the one he built when he used to lead the Scavengers, creating a haven for them.He debated driving over to that place but hesitated, not sure if it was still safe to use.Nonetheless, Reed drove over to the nearest safehouse whose address was stuck in his memory.Only to drive into the parking lot and find out that the shop that was used as a shelter above the safehouse had been turned into a pub.Fuck!“Hey, Mandy, wake up!” He gently shook his daughter awake.Tired, blue eyes fluttered open as she rolled around on the seat.Reed got down, bending so he could scoop her up into his arms but Mandy wriggled, wanting to be let down.As they walked into the pub
Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers. It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame. Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”Her Dad wasn't so
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
Margie Blackwater stormed into Walker Rhomes' lavish office, her eyes blazing with anger. The room was adorned with opulent furniture and expensive artwork, a stark contrast to the fury radiating from Margie. Walker, a tall and imposing figure, sat behind his mahogany desk, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he observed her entrance."Come in, come in, Margie," Walker beckoned, his voice dripping with false charm. He rose from his seat and approached her, his eyes never leaving her face. But Margie was having none of it. She shrugged off his outstretched hands, her voice laced with frustration and determination."You promised, Walker," she seethed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You promised that if I gave you the evidence I had on you, you would leave my son and his daughter alone. But you are still having your men hunt my son. This isn't the deal we had."Walker's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He circled his desk, leaning aga
