Bzzz….bzzzz…
The sound of an incoming message drew Reed's attention and he looked up from his feed to look at his inbox
There were new messages from different people requesting his services but it was the one at the foremost center that prompted him to open it
Out of curiosity, he tapped on the icon and his eyes widened…
$100,000
The amount of money on bid wasn't the surprising thing but the name of the person assigned to kill was
What the hell did Mr Walker do to piss someone off
Even a mere punk was worth, at most, a couple thousand dollars, what made Mr Walker so special
That stumped Reed but then his eyes wandered over to the bottom half of the screen.
The Commissioner?
Thankfully, the mode of payment was cash in person which was convenient since Reed couldn't afford that kind of paper trail.
Even though it was pretty confusing to him, Reed decided to go ahead since he always had a desire to see the Commissioner
Being smart, he created a fake, anonymous account to accept the bid and the client responded
The meeting was set for tomorrow afternoon in an abandoned car park, and Reed rolled out of bed early to arrive at the location on time
On getting there he found out he wasn't the only one there…
There were two men, who judging by their looks and demeanor were also killers waiting
One had a stoic-looking face and appeared moody but it was obvious that he was strong by his stance, while the other guy… could be nicknamed Mr Muscles
He had muscles atop his muscles, with his pockets bulging with ill-hidden weapons.
He was pacing about, being all nervous and fidgety…
A couple of minutes after Reed arrived, a black SUV pulled up, dropping off someone.
A woman stepped out of the car in sky-high heels, and a mask covering her face, shielding her profile from view
She stopped once she got to their front, folding her hands over her chest to hide her anxiety
“I'm sure you've all gotten to know each other by now. I'm just going to go straight to the point, once you guys have concluded the job, the money will be split evenly between you three.
Her voice wavered in the end and Reed could see that she was a bit frightened by them
While he was still thinking about what to say in response to her statement, the guy with many guns grunted
“Hey, you!” Reed raised his head to discover that the guy was talking to him. “Brought anything with you for preparation?” the guy sai
Reed shook his head. “No. I don't have any cash with me, and I wasn't told to come along with any.”
Todd, the guy with many guns, glanced at Reed briefly before looking away.
Reed’s clothes were threadbare and well-worn, nearly adjacent to a streetwalker.
“This guy must be as weak as one too, as he couldn't even bother with bringing along a gun. Not sure he even deserves to take a part of the money.” Todd said
Reed read Todd easily, watching his emotions flee by his face. Todd was disgruntled while the other guy appeared laidback.
”Look, I need you guys to work together so we can-”
“Shut your mouth, lady!” Todd bellowed angrily, aiming at Anna's chest with his gun, through his side pocket. “You better watch that mouth of yours…if you want me to let you go alive, I need to be in a good mood.
The lady, Anna clamped her lips shut immediately, nodding her head seeing the shape of the barrel pointed at her.
Todd smirked, riding on her easy acquiesce but at the back of his mind, he had already resolved to fuck her after they were done with the job.
Todd then glanced over to Reed , still hiding the gun. “You should leave. We only need professionals and you should leave without trying to take part of the money!” Todd said
Reed stared at the Muscles, at a loss for what to do. He needed to prove himself to be taken seriously but unfortunately, it had been a while since he engaged in a fight and Todd was too far away for him to make a move.
So Reed kept silent.
Todd's nostrils flared in anger.
“Who the fuck do you think you are?
He walked towards Reed, patting his side pocket, silently threatening him.
Reed glanced at Todd's pocket, clearly seeing the visual of a gun but he pretended to be clueless.
“Can you stop standing in my way, man, and go back to your post, Muscles?” Reed pretended to be mad, pushing Todd to make a mistake.
Todd reacted with his muscles rather than his brain. Out of anger, he swung the gun out to aim at Reed but Reed had fast reflexes, knocking off the gun as soon as his arm shifted.
Todd staggered, but Reed wasn't done.
He grabbed Todd's hair and pulled it towards him to connect with his knee forcefully.
Blood spattered over his jeans, and Reed landed on the last hook which knocked Todd out immediately.
Glad that happened, Reed rushed forward rolling Todd over so he could remove all his weapons, including a holster gun, two shot ankle guns, and one tucked into his waist.
Reed tossed them to the ground, later reaching out to pick up a few that seemed sturdy.
“Here, help me hold this.” He tried to pass it to Burly Guy but to his surprise, Burly Guy looked scared and bolted the moment Reed tried to force it into his hands.
Damn…
Reed sighted the Anna about to run but he cornered her, hitting her against the wall with force.
“Look, I don't know what the fuck just happened but I'm not like those types of men who acted badly, violating the rules of the trade.” He kept quiet, not giving away too much. “Bottom line is, I needed the money, so I need to know…”
“Know what?!” she said
“Why you're doing this?” He asked her.
Reed mentally prepared himself for anything while hoping she wasn't armed and dangerous and… That he hadn't fallen into a trap.
The lady started to explain. “The owner of the laundry is a drug dealer, the laundry is just a front. The guy is part of a very large trafficking network but from what I hear, he runs this city. My brother Matt was lured into taking drugs, and soon after, he became addicted and my parents had to cart him off to a rehabilitation center when it became too bad.” Moisture gathered at the corners and she angrily swiped it away. “Matt was a minor, you know.” She tried to explain to him. “And rehab didn't work since there were still drug dealers in there and guess what, they were even more cheaper!”She stopped talking for a minute, her eyes appearing glassy as she got sucked into her memories. Reed had to prompt her. “So, what happened?”“My parents of course went to the cops and reported the whole situation, who then traced it back to Walker but no way to even hurt him or pinpoint it to him.” She scoffed. Reed patiently waited her out, allowing her to let it all out of her system.“They
Reed had to make a pit stop at home so he could change into decent clothes that could at least show he belonged in a fancy restaurant.Upon getting there, he discreetly looked around for his ex wife but couldn't find her.“Sir, can I help you with something?” A harried-looking waitress tapped her feet impatiently, looking over his shoulder.Crap“I…um, I'm meeting someone in there.” The lie rolled smoothly off his tongue, while he pretended to look through his phone for a fake name.Thankfully, there were a lot of people on the line and the lady couldn't wait for him to figure it out so she just waved him in.Once he was in, it was easy to spot his stealing wife.It was Mark's birthday and Kayla was doing some type of grand gesture with her friends and his.Reed's eyes widened when Kayla whipped out a very expensive box that had a designer watch. He could overhear some of the guests murmur in surprise, saying they didn't think that Kayla had that type of money, after costing they conc
Reed watched Mike receive a phone call, moving farther away so that Reed wouldn't listen in to his conversation.Reed moved around as if trying to pick things up while craning his ears.Mike went white fast, making Reed wonder what was going on, that was when his eyes snagged on the suit Mike had on.Reed's eyes widened when he placed the Brioni custom-made suit. That suit costs thousands of dollars! He would know because back then when he used to profile high-value clients, most of them had a Brioni suit in their collection.“How the fuck was Mike able to afford that on a salesman's salary?”Reed carefully cataloged everything Mike was putting on for his birthday dinner while he talked and summed the total up to be $3-5k.Reed immediately did some digging and found Mike's apartment, which was a very luxurious building on State Avenue…he was still working at the car wash.Mike was no big fish, born into a wealthy family so the logical explanation was…the owner of the car washHe was a
Reed had no means of transport, so he used the car of the killers, driving it at top speed to Mike's apartment building without bothering about the dead bodies. It was simple logic. No gangster wanted to be caught with his shit flying about especially where the police were concerned, so they could clean up his mess quickly before the cops caught wind of itReed parked carelessly in front of the building, rushing out with his heart in his throat as he barged in without identification. The security guards went on alert instantly and tried to stop him“Hey, where do you think you're going?” the fat one yelled, running up to him.Closing his eyes in annoyance, Reed turned around to set his leg so the man fell to the ground, and to his companion, one punch to the face was lit.Conscious of the ticking clock, Reed ran up the stairs until he got to apartment 17.One knock and a minute later, the door is swung inward to reveal his daughter who gaped at him in disbelief“Dad!” She exclaimed, r
Reed drove carefully on the streets, staring out the window and at the rearview mirror for signs of approaching cars.He needed to get Mandy somewhere safe before those men found him again. The safehouse…Reed used to have many safe houses scattered around the city, but in his state of panic, the only one he could remember now was the one he built when he used to lead the Scavengers, creating a haven for them.He debated driving over to that place but hesitated, not sure if it was still safe to use.Nonetheless, Reed drove over to the nearest safehouse whose address was stuck in his memory.Only to drive into the parking lot and find out that the shop that was used as a shelter above the safehouse had been turned into a pub.Fuck!“Hey, Mandy, wake up!” He gently shook his daughter awake.Tired, blue eyes fluttered open as she rolled around on the seat.Reed got down, bending so he could scoop her up into his arms but Mandy wriggled, wanting to be let down.As they walked into the pub
Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers. It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame. Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”Her Dad wasn't so
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
