Chapter 2

The system window popped up before Arthur as he arrived at his condo; [Mission completed: Retrieve Luna Rhyfel from the Gallagher’s.]

He returned his attention to his home; one that while being comfy, was still extremely luxurious.

From a swimming pool to a garden and a training area, he tried to put in his current home as many elements from his old home as he could and he succeeded for the most part.

He helped Luna into her wheelchair and guided her into the house, smiling gently in response to her shocked expression.

She was notified that a physician would be seeing her before her wedding, but she had never expected the physician to be as wealthy as this.

Arthur stopped on the porch and drew a chair to join her much to her surprise.

“It’s not necessary.”

“What isn’t?” He asked, brow raised.

“You don’t have to be this kind to me, you’re just a hired physician and I’m not worth being treated kindly.”

Luna shifted away from him, averting her gaze and shrinking away in her wheelchair. She was frightened that if she got too comfortable she would get hurt again. She couldn’t let that happen!

Arthur knelt before her and took her hand in his.

She was frightened and confused by the act. The small part of her that actually enjoyed the kindness made her so embarrassed she wished the ground would swallow her up.

Arthur’s heart broke at the sight. He recalled the energetic and kind Luna from his childhood and he could only imagine what she had to go through to end up like this.

Normally, he would’ve been devastated as he would be unable to help his only family member who had saved him from death, but that was not the case.

“You must have gone through a lot, Ms Luna,” he said quietly.

She withdrew her hand from his and avoided his gaze.

He rose, his voice resolute and unwavering, “I promise to heal you completely, so trust me.”

“Take care of her, I’ll be back,” Arthur instructed a man in a full suit standing guard who nodded in response before he headed into the house.

“System inventory, open.”

The translucent blue screen opened in response to his command, his eyes resting on the image of a vial that he was rewarded a while back but had not used it.

It was a high-grade elixir, one capable of healing any and every injury. Fortunately, neither he nor any of his team members had been in a situation that required him to use it as it was a reward he had gotten from his most difficult mission as a mercenary.

He retrieved it from the inventory and the screen vanished soon after.

Moments later, Arthur rejoined Luna with a small medicine cup in hand, one that contained the high-grade elixir and a glass of water.

“Now Ms Luna, you’ll need to drink this and then get some rest and then everything will be fine afterwards.”

For the first time since arriving at his home, she held his gaze, tears spilling out of her eyes. “Are you trying to mock me?! Is that it?! Did my aunt ask you to do this to break me? Or was it Aaron?!”

Her experiences over the years with her distant aunt who became her foster mother were anything but sweet and it became much worse after her accident, it was then her aunt started to look at her as a complete liability.

And while she wished that Aaron Gallagher would be better, he wasn’t. Her marriage to him was both a business deal and a punishment.

It hurt her more as she remembered that the last time she could genuinely smile was as a child before she and her cousin’s family were killed off in an attack.

Arthur watched her quietly. He thought he had lost his heart, after experiencing horror after horror on the battlefield, he thought he was dead inside.

But seeing Luna again, seeing the one who put her life on the line go through this much pain, moved him.

He took her hand once more and squeezed it gently. “I promised you before, didn’t I? I will take care of you and make sure you recover completely so please, trust me, Ms Luna.”

Reluctantly agreeing and realizing there was no other alternative, Luna took the medicine cup and drank the elixir in it, emptying the glass of water afterwards.

“Good, now you’ll need to get some rest, Ms Luna and I promise you in a week you will work again.”

“R-really?” Luna asked in disbelief.

“Of course, I made you a promise did I not? Now, let me guide you to your room so you can rest.”

The week went by in the blink of an eye. Arthur, simply prepared while monitoring his stats. But for Luna, it was like she was in a completely different world.

For the first time since her parents had passed on, she got to experience the true feeling of what an actual family felt like.

While she knew little about the physician who cared for her, she had surprisingly grown closer to him during the time they spent.

He paid more attention to her than was professionally required. From answering some of her cravings, the one he deemed healthy to exchanging stories with her.

He took her on strolls through his garden every morning and evening even though she thought pushing her wheelchair around would be an inconvenience.

For many, that might have seemed insignificant, something that would always be there for them, but that wasn’t the case with Luna.

For a woman who hadn’t experienced the love and care from family in years, it was a life-changing experience for her.

But since that day, he hadn’t given her the medicine he offered her on her first day in his house. Instead, Arthur gave her a combination of lower-grade elixir to help her recover her energy faster.

“Looks like it’s about time, Luna.”
