A second chance

Laila was attentive when Pat (27) was on the line with Mr Williams, his Dad, director of Operations at AB Corp.

"Dad. My fiancee's appointment was terminated. Why?" he asked.

"I don't know. It came from the Chairman," said Mr Williams.

"Chairman? Dad, you couldn't intervene."

"Pat. Don't ever call me in that matter. Using me to scheme herself up?" his father blew up.

Pat hissed and cut the line.

"What did he say?" asked Laila, staring at Pat's face.

"Don't mind the old man."

"Oh! He is not in support of our marriage?"

"Am I a kid? Not that he is not. He said it was the chairman that terminated your appointment."

"I heard that. So, was that why he was raking?"

"There is nothing to worry about. I am going to Atlas as a non-executive director. I will get you fixed into a better position there. You know how much they pay?"

" No. You said it is Nebraska?"

"Yes. Immediately, I get there, I'll send for you."

Laila rose to go afterward.

He meshed their fingers to give her a kiss.

"Pat, wait. She freed herself. "I'm going,"

She kickstarted her car, teeth fastened " Nebraska! David's home state! Tomorrow I'll take a flight...I'll, before he moves in."

She thought of the sanity of going to find David in his state.

There were many things to take into consideration.

First, his parents were opposed to their marriage. To worsen the situation, they died and neither David nor she went for their burial.

She honked by mistake and waved to a woman who was agitated at her steering because she was in her lane. It was her who was rough driving, coming from behind to brush her car.

Inside her room, she stood before her wardrobe, picking what to wear.

How long she will stay will determine what and what she will wear.

Done.

She was in Nebraska by the early flight.

Though the winter temperature had dropped, she had layered herself with a jacket, now in the crook of the right arm, and a long sweater passing well below the knees.

She carried a brown bag in her left hand and was at the gate of the old statehouse.

Her hair covered her ears and the extensions flowed down from the front of both of her shoulders giving the size of her breasts more cover.

She was sad-looking, despite her elegant poise at the gate.

David gave the security a call to let the lady at the gate enter.

She added life to her steps as the auto gate rolled one side gradually for her.

"I won't ask her anything." David made a U-turn. " I can't shame one I love? " He remained on his gentleman's policy and lit his cigarette.

"Hmm. David!" Laila exclaimed as she entered. "You have changed!" She smiled.

"Seat. Laila. Welcome."

She left her seat she just perched on and sat tight in the Divan with David, gripped his fingers, and rested her head on him.

David shifted and she was resting her head on his upper leg to recover from jet lag.

David smoked one stick after another: Have I done my best? His heart pounded. Is this weakness or gentility?

He continued to rewind the past:

She darted out her tongue and the man's lips caught it and kissed it, kissed it, kissed it! she closed her eyes and her knees wobbled.

He jiggled his fist and lit a cigarette.

" Can I get you something?" he asked.

She shook her head.

"What do you want then?" he asked her.

"A second chance." she said.

"A second chance? You missed the first?"

Silence.

"I will give you a second chance. Get up and take something...Laila. No cause for alarm. Get up. The second chance is given."

David pulled out a plain handkerchief from his pocket to dry her tears.

"David. Should I believe you?"

"My nice guyness?" David chuckled. " All I want is genuine repentance. Your genuine repentance."

"David. Believe me." she said.

"Fine. Get up and take something."

She let him raise her head from his leg.

The butler prepared various dishes on the dining table brewing out fragrance aromas, and faced David, bowed, and exited.

"David. Why did you choose to hide yourself? My sister said she saw you?"

"Did I hide myself? Or my love for you was greater than my personality?"

Silence. Then, she took a long breath in and out.

"Laila, for you to deserve a second chance, you have to know the gravity of my love, Your Mr Romeo"

She nodded.

"And my parents, because they were opposed to our Romeo-ness and Juliet-ness, I did not attend their burial." David recalled.

She was nodding agreeably to everything David was saying.

She placed her fork and spoon on the table and held his hands.

She loves David but she has a policy.

Would a leopard change its skin? Would she change her policy?
