006: The Janitor Offer

"What! I should work for Benjamin?" Chris exclaimed, glaring at Karen mysteriously.

"Of course!" Karen responded, "Aren't you supposed to be happy that Mr Burton was cheerful enough to grant you a job despite how you embarrassed him?"

Before Chris could even defend himself, Karen added "I don't want to hear further complaints from you, Chris! This family has been faithful since you were little but now that you've grown to become an adult, we refuse to let you feed on our daughter's income!"

"So make your decision, Chris! You either work for Mr Burton or you leave our home!"

Karen makes most of the decisions in the family, so Chris has no option but to obey her by agreeing to work for Benjamin Burton.

"Get yourself ready, first thing tomorrow morning, we are heading to his office!" Karen added before walking away.

After Karen and Josh left, Chris knew that there were thousands of explanations he had to give to Ava. So, he took most of his time apologizing to her for not listening to her five years ago when she asked him not to take the blame for Alice.

It all seemed like their friendship was back on track as Ava mentioned to Chris that she was happy he got over Alice. First thing tomorrow, they both agreed to go to Benjamin's company to find a good job for Chris.

7:45 AM

Karen was already awake and prepared to leave for Benjamin's company.

"Chris!" She called out but no response was coming. Ava walked out also prepared for the interview so her mom had to ask her if she had seen Chris.

Before Ava could explain, Karen already took her judgement "I knew that he'd be sleeping by this time of the day!"

"I'm not asleep, Aunt!" Chris responded, walking down the stairs.

As Chris walked down, Karen pretended as though she never mentioned Chris might be asleep.

"Let's go! Mr Burton must be waiting!" She added and they all left to their luxurious car.

Ava volunteered to drive so Chris attempted to sit at the front but Karen stopped him instantly!

"What are you trying to do?" She asked and closed the car door.

"I'm obviously attempting to enter the car, Aunt! We're leaving to Benjamin's company, aren't we?" Chris responded, maintaining a clear eyesight with Karen.

"I'm sorry but there is no space for you in this car, Chris! You're not worthy of seating in this car!"

"But we are going for the interview, aren't we? Do you expect me to be late..."

"I expect you to walk to the company. After all, that's what you're good at!" Karen cut him off and entered the car instantly. Ava could have stopped her Mom but she already made her decision.

After all, that wasn't her first time stopping Chris from going anywhere with them. Josh handed Chris some money, urging him to use them for his transport fare.

Karen hates Chris because he's been a burden to her family right from childhood and her hatred increased when he took the fall for Alice and went to jail.

Chris refused to collect the money from Josh, stating he would manage on his own but before Ava and her family arrived at Benji's Corp, Chris was already there waiting for them.

"Chris, what are you doing here? I mean..." Ava didn't even know how to structure her question. Karen on the other hand was shocked because she knew that Chris had nothing, so how possible was it for him to be there before them and even if he entered public transport, he shouldn't be there at that moment.

Chris smiled at them as he remembered how he used his superpower of running. He got to Benji's Corp within 10 seconds and had been there for almost 30 minutes.

"Please, Ma. The boss wishes to see you!" A security agent interrupted and took them to Benjamin's office but when they got there, they didn't see him.

They had to wait for an extra 30 minutes, yet he wasn't there. Chris smiled to himself, thinking thoroughly if Benjamin was doing all these purposely.

"Where could he be?" Chris finally spoke up. Immediately after his utterance, Benjamin entered his office.

"I'm sorry for keeping you all waiting..." He added, walking to his seat when Chris scoffed "Seriously!"

"Excuse me! Did you just say something to me?" Benjamin, who overheard Chris's silent talk, asked.

"I wasn't referring to you. Come on, we've been waiting for you for ages now. Can we proceed with the interview already?"

"Interview?" Benjamin smirked "I decided to offer you a job, yes but I never mentioned Interview..."

As he made his utterance, Chris stared at him horribly. "So what job do you have to offer without an interview? As long as I can remember, nobody gets a job without an interview or even clarification of his or her CV!"

"People that deserve an interview before getting a job are Graduates..." Benjamin responded, standing to his feet "Not an ex-convict like you!"

Benjamin and Chris exchanged enraged glare! After all, this was what Benjamin wanted. He wants to humiliate Chris first before he can grant him a job. But what type of job was he even willing to offer?

This was Chris's question until Benjamin dialed a number and said, "You may come in now"

Not long had he made his phone call did two men dressed in Janitor Uniforms stepped in, leaving Chris in wonder.

"And who are they?" Chris had to ask.

"They are your co-workers! From today hence, you'll be working as a Janitor in my office!" Benjamin responded, walking out from his desk. "For now, your pay is $300 and as time moves on, I may consider increasing your salary!"

Hearing that Benjamin offered a monthly salary of $300 to Chris as his janitor, Karen walked to Benjamin and thanked him but her appreciation wasn't Benjamin's priority.

He wanted something else!

"What is the problem, Mr Burton? It's there anything you want to say?" Karen asked, trying to change Benjamin's facial structure.

"Yes, Mrs Josh! I'm not satisfied with what just happened..." Benjamin responded, his eyes fixed on Chris's face.

"I genuinely offered your adopted son a job but he seemed to be unhappy. Instead of you appreciating me, he should be the one doing that!"

"I'd love to hear him call me his Divine Helper!" Benjamin added, his words rising in anger.

Karen never wished for Mr Burton to be sad so she immediately turned to Chris with that cruel face of hers "Go on, tell him how grateful you are for this job!"

She commanded but Chris didn't take any step. His mind was calculating impulsively where Benjamin got his brain from.

"Are you deaf, Chris? Go ahead and appreciate Mr Burton! And you better do it properly!" Karen added but Chris responded immediately after her

"Why should I thank Benjamin Burton for something as useless as this?"

Alice walked forward, urging Chris to mind his language but he turned a deaf ear.

"You're not ashamed of yourself, Benjamin Burton! Of all the great jobs out there, you're offering me a job as a personal janitor. You dare to call that an offer?"

"What other offer do you expect me to give an ordinary ex-convict like you? Not like you're worth cleaning my shoes!"

"Really?" Chris scoffed "The worst mistake you can make is underestimating me, Benjamin Burton. In case you have forgotten, I am no longer the Chris you put in jail! Never dare to Underestimate my capabilities..."

"What are your capabilities?" Benjamin asked jokingly, pulling a threatening smile on his face "No matter how long you served in jail, you remain my useless friend who went to jail for his wife! You still remain my useless old friend whom I used to order around... No matter what you do, you'll never bring me down!"

As Benjamin made a mockery of Chris, he put his hands in his pockets and said, "What if I cut off your ego by bringing your company down? Will you still believe that I am that old friend you used to order around?"

Benjamin burst into immediate laughter after Chris's words. Even Alice now believes that Chris is doing too much already. She had to warm him one more but Chris desisted from backing out.

"Why are you laughing?" He directed to Benjamin "Did it sound so funny?"

Benjamin stopped laughing immediately and stretched his hands on Chris's shoulders. Tapping them, he said "Benji's Corp has five contracts with the world's best Group, Dragon Group! In addition to that, we are planning to publicize our $1 billion contract. Do you think a nobody like you can bring down my company?"

"A nobody like me can't bring down your company. Instead, a nobody like me already brought down your company!" Chris responded, an ironic smile appearing on his face. As he smiled, Benjamin's confidence dropped as he wondered what Chris meant by his words.

"What are you trying to say?" He asked mysteriously and Chris responded, "Check your phone, a lot of emails and notifications are trooping in!"

Benjamin opened his phone immediately and his mouth suddenly went wide! He couldn't believe what he was seeing!

His Company just lost all the money they had in their account and all the contracts they have with not just the Dragon Group but with other Groups have been cancelled.

In fact, the last message states that his company 'Benji's Corp' is currently on a mortgage of $7 trillion!

Not holding this, Benjamin turned to Chris angrily with his mouth quivering, "Who are you?" He asked and Chris smiled

"I told you never to Underestimate me, didn't I?"
