6. Twist Of Fate

Chapter Six

Elijah was nervous, his eyes darting back and forth as he shifted his weight from foot to foot

“No, this is not going to work. I am innocent and only came to the bar to mourn my mother’s death. There is a mistake somewhere , Selena here seems like a nice lady but I declined this offer and I won’t be your son-in-law …” but before Elijah could finish his words , Grandfather Clinton spoke

“Shut him up “ he ordered, his voice low and menacing.

The bodyguards stepped forward, their hands moving to grip Elijah’s arms. He struggled against them, but they were too strong. They dragged him to the center of the room, their footsteps echoing in the silence that followed before the sounds of beating took over.

Elijah was thrown to the ground. The bodyguards surrounded him, their faces twisted into sneers of contempt. Elijah looked up at them, fear and confusion written across his features.

"Please," he begged, his voice barely above a whisper. "Please, don't do this” Elijah pleaded while Nicki kept viewing and Selena started crying more.

But the bodyguards were unmoved. They began to kick and punch him, their blows raining down on him with brutal force. Elijah cried out in pain, his body writhing on the ground as the bodyguards continued to beat him.

The beating went on for what felt like an eternity. Elijah's screams echoed through the hallway, his body battered and broken. And still, the bodyguards continued to rain down blow after blow, their faces twisted into expressions of sadistic pleasure.

Finally, it was over. The bodyguards stepped back, their breathing heavy as they looked down at the youngman's broken body. Elijah lay there, bloodied and bruised, his eyes closed as he gasped for breath.

“When I speak, don’t you dare interfere or question me, “ said Grandfather Clinton before he left the room angrily.

“Selena, look at your pathetic husband. Oh my goodness, you will be the laughing stock in the entire family for having the most poor in-law. Look at your husband looking like a criminal “ Nicki said laughing at Selena who is busy crying, it looks like she is also hopeless in the situation.

“Nothing happened between us and this isn't a big enough deal to tarnish the image of the family” Selena cried but Nicki kept mocking her while they ignored Elijah who was on the floor and gnashing his teeth in pain.

“Bye, take care of your mess and your new rough husband “ Nicki said before storming out of the room.

“You! I hate you with the whole of my life for ruining my life and my chances of being the future heir in line to my grandfather’s property !” Selena shouted at poor Elijah the whole of her life.

Elijah lay on the floor of the hotel room, his body wracked with pain. He had been badly beaten by the bodyguards. Now he lay there, helpless, his body bruised and battered.

He tried to move, but every inch of his body screamed in agony. He groaned, his eyes shut tight against the pain. His mind raced as he tried to make sense of what had happened. How had he ended up like this? What had he done to deserve this?

He opened his eyes and tried to focus on his surroundings. The room was dimly lit, with only a single lamp casting a soft glow across the space. He could see the outlines of furniture - a bed, a dresser, a couple of chairs - but they all seemed to blur together.

He closed his eyes again and tried to regulate his breathing. In, out, in, out. He tried to calm himself down, but it was difficult with the pain coursing through his body As he tries to ignore Selena’s nagging.

“A driver will take you to the address of your new home and a doctor will see you and make sure that you don’t contaminate the entire family” Selena said with her croaky voice before she also walked out of the room leaving a confused , betrayed and broken hearted Elijah behind who is still trying to process what’s happening.

“ I simply went out to drink and mourn my mother’s death, how did I become a son-in-law ?” Elijah asked himself.

Maybe it’s better for me to die than to suffer this badly was what Elijah kept thinking about till the driver took him to his house his own house which is so quiet and it reminded him of his late mother and how unfortunate life was for him.

The drive home was short , Elijah thought his father or uncle will look for him to comfort him but no such thing happened and that’s when Elijah realised that he needs to leave the house if he wants to start working hard to earn his own money , influential power and respect.

As he entered the small bedroom, Elijah's eyes filled with tears. Memories of his late mother came flooding back to him, overwhelming him with a deep sense of loss. He stood there for a moment, taking in the room that had once been her sanctuary.

The walls were painted a soft shade of pink, with delicate floral wallpaper bordering the top. The curtains were drawn closed, casting a warm, comforting glow over the room. A small bed sat in the center of the room, adorned with a patchwork quilt that his mother had made by hand. A nightstand with a small lamp and a stack of books stood next to the bed, a testament to his mother's love of reading.

Elijah walked over to the nightstand and picked up one of the books. He opened it and was hit with a wave of emotion as he saw his mother's handwriting scrawled on the inside cover. She had written a heartfelt message, telling him how much she loved him and how proud she was of the man he was becoming. He clutched the book to his chest, the tears flowing freely now.

He moved over to the bed and sat down, taking in the familiar scent of his mother's perfume. He remembered how she would tuck him in at night, reading him stories and singing lullabies until he drifted off to sleep. He could still hear her voice in his head, soft and soothing, a constant presence in his life.

Elijah reached out and touched the quilt, tracing the intricate patterns with his fingertips. He remembered watching his mother work on it for hours, her nimble fingers flying over the fabric. She had taught him how to sew when he was young, and he had always loved spending time with her in this room, creating new things together.

He looked around the room, taking in all the little details that made it his mother's. The photographs on the wall, the trinkets on the shelves, the dried flowers in a vase on the dresser. All of it was a testament to the love and care she had put into this space.

Elijah sat there for a while, lost in his memories. He thought about all the times he had come to this room seeking comfort, seeking solace. His mother had always been there for him, her arms open wide, ready to offer a hug or a listening ear.

Now, she was gone. Elijah's heart ached with the knowledge that he would never again be able to come to this room and find his mother waiting for him. The tears continued to flow, and he let them, allowing himself to grieve for the woman who had meant everything to him.

As he sat there, lost in his sorrow, a sense of peace washed over him. He knew that his mother was gone, but he also knew that she would always be with him, in his heart and in his memories. This room, her room, would always be a sanctuary for him, a place to come and remember the woman who had loved him more than anything in the world.

Elijah stood up, wiping the tears from his eyes. He took one last look around the room, taking in every detail, every memory. Then, with a deep breath, he turned and walked out, carrying his mother's love with him as he went to meet the drivers to take him over to Selena’s place.

“Instead of me living like a slave, it is better for me to start a new life .Elijah decided that the situation with Selena will give him the perfect chance to leave the small basement apartment he was sharing with his mother and he knew that nobody cares about him besides he doesn’t have a girlfriend and Selena is a beautiful woman.

“Bags” the bodyguards asked Elijah when he left his room and back to the car that drove him but he shrugged because he didn’t have anything to carry.

“You need to change, the president Clinton hates this kind of shabby look especially when he is about to introduce you and Selena to the public before any scandal surfaces.

“I don’t have a suit “ Elijah said with a low tone and the bodyguards rolled their eyes before bundling up inside the ar an old and oversized suit that looks like it was thrifted.

Elijah stood in the back of the black SUV, the dim interior of the vehicle casting shadows across his face as he slipped into the oversized suit that had been handed to him by the burly bodyguard. The suit hung off his slender frame, the sleeves and pant legs billowing around him like sails in the wind. He tugged at the fabric, trying to get it to sit right on his body, but it seemed to resist his efforts, stubbornly clinging to its own shape.

As he struggled with the suit, Elijah glanced out the tinted windows of the SUV, watching the world go by in a blur of motion and color. The streetlights flickered past, casting a sickly orange glow across the pavement, while the neon signs of nearby shops and restaurants blazed with an almost painful intensity. The sounds of the city filtered through the windows, a constant hum of traffic and chatter that seemed to surround him on all sides.

With a final tug, Elijah managed to get the suit to sit somewhat more comfortably on his body, although it still felt bulky and awkward. He smoothed down the fabric, trying to make it look as presentable as possible, and ran his fingers through his hair, which had grown a little too long and unkempt over the past few weeks.

Despite his best efforts, Elijah felt acutely self-conscious in the oversized suit. It made him feel like a child playing dress-up, or a clown in a circus, rather than the sophisticated and capable adult that he hoped to present to the world. He glanced up at the bodyguard, who was watching him with a blank expression, and wondered what the man was thinking of him.

As if sensing his discomfort, the bodyguard cleared his throat and spoke in a deep, rumbling voice. "You look manageable “ he said, gesturing to Elijah's reflection in the window. "Just remember to act the part by laying low and keeping you mouth shut and then maybe you'll be fine”

Elijah nodded, taking a deep breath to calm his nerves. He knew that he had to keep up appearances, no matter how uncomfortable he felt in the suit. The stakes were too high, and there was too much riding on his success.

With a sense of determination, he straightened his shoulders and stepped out of the SUV, the bright lights of the city hitting him full force. The bodyguard followed close behind him, his imposing figure a reassuring presence at his back.

As they walked down the street, Elijah tried to adopt the confident stride of a successful businessman, although he felt like a fraud in the oversized suit. People turned to look at him as he passed, their eyes lingering on the mismatched clothing and slightly disheveled appearance.

But despite their scrutiny, Elijah felt a flicker of excitement in his chest. He was on a mission, and nothing would stop him from achieving his goal, not even an ill-fitting suit.

As they reached their destination, Elijah took a deep breath and pushed open the door, stepping into a room filled with the sound of laughter and the clinking of glasses. He scanned the crowd, his eyes darting from face to face, until he saw the person he had come to meet.

With a sense of purpose, he made his way towards Selena who is across the room, his oversized suit billowing around him like a cape. The bodyguard followed closely behind, his presence a silent reminder of the danger that lay ahead.

But Elijah was undaunted. He had come too far to let a little thing like an oversized suit get in his way. And as he approached his target, he knew that his life is about to change.
