05. Meeting Mason Dominic

Kalix stared at the series of numbers with hatred. Even though he despised the old man, he still remembered everything related to him, whether it was in his past life or now.

His mother had loved the man so much that she had gone to great lengths to find him. She even waited for him to return for decades. However, in the end, what she got was not what she had hoped for.

Mason did return to his hometown, but not to meet Kalix's mother, Glory, but to sever all ties from their past. At that time, Mason wanted to run for vice governor. Before his political journey reached its peak, he wanted to cleanse his past.

This caused Glory to suffer a heart attack, and her condition worsened before she eventually passed away.

To this day, it was Kalix's biggest regret. He should have never hidden anything from his mother.

Fortunately, he had a second chance. His mother was still alive and had not been killed by Mason.

"You have to go meet him," the system said, snapping him out of his reverie.

"Of course," Kalix replied calmly. How could he not go see Mason?

In his previous life, he could only meet Mason when his mother was admitted to the hospital, and her illness was diagnosed for the first time. But now, this meeting was happening sooner. Perhaps it was because of the incident in the back building and the breakup between him and Jane, Mason's paid spy.

The system said again, "Good. I will release a new mission for you."

"A new mission? What is it?" Kalix furrowed his brow.

"It's a system secret. It will be released later."

Hearing that, Kalix didn't press further and replied to the number, agreeing to the meeting.

After everything, time passed quickly. Kalix went to Nova Restaurant fifteen minutes before the meeting time, which meant he would arrive at more than 5 in the evening. He deliberately came late. This was something he didn't dare to do in the past. In every meeting with Mason, Kalix would always try to arrive 15 minutes early.

Not because he wanted to please the old man, but he was trying to show respect to the man his mother had loved so dearly.

Sure enough, Kalix arrived at Nova Restaurant around half-past five. He headed to the reception desk and asked for Mason Dominic's name, then was escorted to the reserved private room.

In the private room, Mason sat with a scowl. When he saw Kalix, his expression grew even uglier. He snorted in anger.

"Sorry, I'm late. The city's traffic was terrible during rush hour. You know I can only use public transportation," Kalix said with a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"Sit down," Mason ordered. Even though they knew they were father and son, the atmosphere between them was like that of strangers.

Kalix sat in front of Mason calmly, aware that the old man was scrutinizing every inch of him, from his shabby clothes to his ordinary shoes and even his rough hands.

Moreover, Kalix's face was marked with bruises from the fight with Lorenz in the back building. Of course, his appearance seemed like that of a thug.

Mason had been an educated man for a long time, and he disliked rebellion like Kalix's. This made Kalix's value in his eyes decrease even further the longer he looked at him.

"I don't know what you like, so I just ordered what I want to eat," Mason said indifferently. This was an expensive restaurant not easily accessible to the middle class, and he knew Kalix had never been here.

Kalix nodded, picked up the menu, and flipped through the pages.

Seeing that, Mason smiled and said, "Oh, I forgot you've never been to a place like this. Let me order the food for you. How about it?"

He pretended to care, but his way of speaking clearly insulted Kalix.

Kalix didn't care about the insult, he closed the menu and replied, "Sure, go ahead."

While Mason mentioned a few dish names, a 'ding' sounded in Kalix's mind. A screen lit up with a series of words.

[Mission: Make money from your conversation partner.]

Seeing the mission, Kalix was taken aback. What is this?

"What's wrong? Don't you understand any of the dishes I mentioned?" Mason suddenly spoke, snapping Kalix out of his thoughts. "But I've already ordered, there's no junk food here."

Kalix smiled again, as if to say it didn't matter.

"By the way, why do you want to meet me now?" Kalix asked without beating around the bush.

"You're very straightforward," Mason praised him. "But let me explain one thing to you..."

Kalix nonchalantly nodded. Whatever it was, he didn't care.

"My relationship with your mother ended when I left her in that shabby village," Mason said with disgust. He had long forgotten the remote and squalid village, but he was forced to remember it now.

Kalix wasn't bothered by the old man's disgust, he found it amusing when he heard him say that.

Hearing Kalix's laughter, Mason felt displeased. He furrowed his brow and asked, "What are you laughing at?"

"Just laughing at something foolish. By the way, your relationship with my mother never started, you unilaterally bound it. How can it end even before it began?"

Mason stared at Kalix sharply. Hatred and anger filled his eyes, but not all of it was directed at Kalix. There was also a hatred that came from who knows where, but it was aimed at Kalix.

"You're right. So I hope you don't bother me with things about your mother and yourself."

Kalix leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest, acting very casually as if he were facing an old friend.

His attitude made Mason dissatisfied, thinking that only a rural and poor youth would behave so rudely. Unethical and lacking in etiquette and manners.

In reality, Kalix intentionally displayed this negative side to make Mason dislike him even more. The more Mason disliked him, the more attention he paid. And with that attention, the vigilance and anxiety from the past would accumulate more quickly.

So the sooner Mason would get rid of him. And the sooner Kalix would exact this exhausting revenge.

After finding a comfortable position, Kalix said, "I said that your relationship with my mother never started, but it doesn't mean you have no responsibility."

Kalix pointed to himself and continued, "Can't you see? I am her son. And you impregnated her before you left."

"It happened over 19 years ago. How can I be sure if the child she carried was mine?"

Mason could say it with confidence because he left before the woman gave birth. Their marriage also happened so suddenly and briefly that it couldn't be called a proper marriage.

Hearing that, Kalix was very angry, but he concealed it with hearty laughter. His eyes were slightly watery, and he wiped them. Under Mason's deadly gaze, Kalix slowly calmed down. Then he said mockingly, "Can't you see it? My face is 8 out of 10 similar to yours. I even wonder if your children born to your wife now look like you too, or maybe they resemble your wife's former husband."
