4 - Divorced

Simon groaned as he shifted from the bed. His head hurts and he was nauseated. With eyes half-closed, he looked at the window only to find that the sun was already high in the sky.

He overslept and he has a hangover. He remembered himself last night getting more alcohol than his body could tolerate.

As he struggled to sit on the bed, images from last night came into his memory like an avalanche.

Their arguments, the insults, the divorce papers he refused to sign, and the reality that his beloved wife had sex with another man.

Simon was once again devoured by the pain of what Ashley did. He realized that he was such a loser for being cheated on like this, not to mention the discrimination he endured from her family.

He got drunk last night because he can’t handle the pain and humiliation. He needed to erase that from his memory, he needed an outlet and alcohol was the easiest way.

He struggled to get out of bed, he felt like his surroundings were spinning.

“Damn, hangovers!”

He refreshed up and when he emerged to their living room, silence greeted him. He looked around the house and realization hit him. Ashley didn’t return last night. She slept somewhere, and the thought that maybe she was with Gregory Holt made his bile rose to his mouth.

He shook off all those thoughts and headed toward the kitchen. He made himself a cup of coffee and toasted a slice of bread.

He was about to eat his breakfast when the door of their apartment slammed open, and Ashley strode inside like a true queen who owns the world.

He noticed she was not wearing the same clothes as last night.

And then, Gregory Holt came to the view. He looks magnificent with his Armani suit matched with a gold Rolex watch. His eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses making it hard for Simon to see his true expression.

Simon’s body went stiff. He wanted to punch the guy for stealing his wife, but he dismissed the idea. He’s not a violent man, and even if he is, he will not let it show.

“Ashley, you’re back.” Simon’s voice was incredibly calm, even with the fact that his wife brought another man into their home.

“So, is this your husband?” Gregory took his sunglasses off and looked at Simon from head to toe, then his lips formed a wide, insulting grin. “You married this loser, Ash? Are you serious?” He laughed mockingly. “I can’t imagine you tolerated this to happen to you.?

Ashley smirked at Gregory’s remarks. “I was forced to marry him. If I were to choose a groom, I would never choose a poor rat like him.” Ash pointed a finger at Simon.

Simon ignored Gregory’s remarks, instead, he looked at his wife.

“What is this man doing in our home, Ash? I don’t want him inside our house. He is free to leave any time.” Simon acted as if he was tough, but deep inside he was truly hurt watching his wife sided with another man. As if the insults last night were not enough.

Gregory broke into a series of laughter, and Ash laugh with him too. His mocking laugh reverberated through the room.

“I own this building now, idiot. I will be the one to throw you out of this place anytime I want, and not you. I bought this yesterday for ten million dollars, so I have all the rights to stand here. You, on the other hand, should leave this place right now.”

Gregory’s smirk widen as he dug the pockets inside his coat. “But first, you need to sign these papers.”

Gregory throw the papers and they scattered on the floor.

Simon got a view of those papers and he was shocked to see that those were the same papers Ash had last night. The divorce papers.

Simon swallowed hard.

“Sign those papers, and we're done. I don’t want to have anything to do with trash like you.”

“Ash…” It was all Simon managed to say. He was shocked. Was she really serious about divorcing him for that man, Gregory Holt?

Simon’s hands were trembling. The humiliation was too much. His pain turned into rage as he looked at the two.

Ashley shoving it on his face that she had found another man to replace him was painful enough. How much more if she brought the man home and the pair wanted him to sign those papers?

Simon picked up the papers and stared at them. He couldn't understand what was written there, but he saw his name and Ashley’s.

Was he really this worthless? Can’t Ashley love him with the way he was? He’s sure as hell Ash didn’t truly love Gregory. She just saw how capable Holt is, and she wanted to get hold of the wealth and power.

Simon realized how much of a manipulator his wife is.

“C’mon, sign those damn papers! You’re wasting our time.” Ashley shouted, her voice laced with desperation.

Was she this desperate to get rid of him?

“I think I what he wanted, babe.”

Ash turned to look at Gregory with questioning eyes.

Gregory pulled out his wallet from the back of his pocket. He fished out several dollar bills from it and toasted it in the air.

“You want money, right? The reason why you don’t want to sign it is that you wanted to squeeze out some money from us?” Gregory once again toasted a lot of dollar bills on the air making Ashley gasp in surprise.

“There’s the money you wanted, now signed it you freaking, asshole! Signed it!”

Gregory threw out a ballpen, it landed on Simon’s feet.

All his life, Simon has been very patient with the people who tried to hurt him. They discriminated him, thinking that he was a poor and useless guy. They insulted his very existence to the world, telling him how much of a loser he is for being so poor.  He’s been mocked, hurt, and looked down to.

And now, Simon thought it was best to stop all of it. He will not tolerate it anymore. He knew to himself that he didn't deserve all of this maltreatment. He may be hiding his true identity but that doesn't give these people the right to look down on someone who has nothing.

He looked at the two who stood in front of him, their faces were filled with disgust as they waited for him to sign.

Simon picked the pen from his feet. He raised the paper but he never read what was written on it. Without any word, he put his signature on every page.

Every stroke of his hand to sign the paper was accompanied by a promise to get back to those people who belittled him. He will definitely take his revenge on them.

The moment he finished signing it, Ashley immediately snatched the paper from his hand. Her face brightened as she scanned every page and find Simon’s signature on it.

“That was easy. That just shows what kind of a loser you are.”

Gregory and Ash left the apartment laughing at him.

Simon was left in the house. His heart was broken and his ego was bruised.  He had nothing in his pocket now but some coins. He needed extra money so he can look for a place to stay for the night.

With one last glance at the house he considered his home for the past years, he sighed and packed up his things.

Simon wondered what Chairman Steele's reaction if he learned that his precious granddaughter decided to end things between them.
