MALTHUS SNACK BAR - DAY
Monica and Célio are sitting at the table, which has already been served. They eat and talk.
Célio begins, "Monica, I understand that you have been brave since we met, but... Now we are in other domains. We left our parents' skirts. So I ask you to be careful when facing certain people."
"Oh, are you worried about me, Célio?" Monica reacts with emotion.
Célio reacts by shaking his head, "N-no, Monica, what’s is it? Your father will be here shortly after, knocking me down. I respect you, I'm not flirting with you."
Monica launches a joke, "Especially because in flirting you are not very good."
Célio did not catch, "Anyway, that Ricardo worries me. Mysterious, creepy, alone... He has already got into some trouble and you know that he cannot be trusted. Today you were with Carina and Fábia, but... Imagine, one day you’ll go there alone, at night..."
Monica says thankfully, "I appreciate the concern, Célio, but I'm not that careless. I’ll never be alone with him at night. And for now, Ricardo hasn't been involved in anything serious like drugs; that's why you can face it."
"Yes, but electricity cat is the first step. I told the girls to call Escelsa, but the cat issue has to be with the police station. This is a crime, Monica."
"Yes, and Mayor Tito was elected promising order and decency."
Aurélio approaches with the apron on his clothes, "Excuse me, young people. Did you say electricity cats in our neighborhood? From whom?"
"Look, Seu Aurélio, we still don't have proof, but we believe that who started it was —"
The noise of the door opening and the presence of someone make Monica interrupt herself. She pokes Célio.
It's Ricardo approaching them, arrogant and scowling as always.
"Where's the owner of this joint?"
Aurélio breathes deeply, wiggles in negative, and goes to attend. There is tension, "What will you want, young man?"
"What do you have the best?"
"Annie Lima already ate the best yesterday, but if you want..."
"Hey man, never tell the customer what's missing, emphasize what you have! That discourages a potential purchase."
Monica and Célio puzzledly look at each other.
Aurélio answers, "We have these snacks that were fried today."
"The problem is that I never know what the oil used in these fries is like. You keep repeating the same oil for months, too lazy to change it for a new one. It gives us cancer."
Some customers are beginning to be afraid to continue eating.
Aurélio is getting embarrassed, "I assure you that I change my oil every week."
"Do not assure me, but the health surveillance. See me then two coxinhas."
Aurélio promptly picks up the coxinhas. Instinctively he puts it in a paper bag for travel.
Ricardo exclaims, "Are you packing for the trip? You don't even know if I'm going to eat here!"
Aurélio is mocking, "Are you going to eat here, or is it for the trip?"
"I'm going to travel to Hawaii with the Engineers!"
Ricardo takes the bag, puts his other hand in his pocket, takes a five-dollar bill, and hands it to Aurélio. When Aurélio makes the change, Ricardo starts to leave.
"Hey, your change."
Ricardo laughs dismissively, "You can buy a broom; you need to clean it up here."
Ricardo laughs and leaves. Aurélio claps his hand on the marble, irritated. Célio and Monica get up and go to him.
"Are you all right, Seu Aurélio?"
"Very well, Célio, just anger. Some people come into the world just to take away our joy, it’s not possible."
Monica says, "This is not going to end like this, Aurélio. I'm still going to dig deeper into this cat story."
Aurélio calms down a little; he smiles and puts both hands on Célio's shoulder and the other on Monica's shoulder. The two smile back.
COR-DE-ROSA STATIONERY
Tito gets into the stationery shop. Located on the same Rhodia Avenue, the commerce belongs to Rosa Martins, 20, with loose hair with unruly strands. She approaches the customer, knowing who he is. The stationery store is crammed with products, it doesn't have enough amount of clients to sell and free up space.
"What can I help you with, Seu Tito?"
Tito, who was looking for an A4 sheet, did not like her calling "Seu", and tried to hide it.
"Does the young lady have some ream of A4 sheet?"
"Yes, I have here."
She takes him to the product location. She crouches and picks up. In the background, Carina opened the door and entered.
Tito says to Rosa, "You have a lot of things here. It’s a big investment in the store, or else sales are not good."
"Yeah... It’s a new neighborhood, people are starting to get used to it. And there are new residents every moment."
"And that's why I need to help you with new residents, and therefore new customers for you."
Tito walks with the ream practically glued to his chest. Rosa still doesn't notice. They go back to the starting point and Rosa spots Carina, looking.
"Can I help you with something, dear?"
"Do you have acrylic paint?" Carina asks her.
"Yes, I do, on your right. Sorry, the store is a bit messy, but it will get better."
Carina responds sweetly, "Well, it looks like it’s full of many options. I liked it; I won't have to take a bus to go to the Tribo Estônia anymore."
Rosa smiles and goes to the other side of the counter obviously to receive from Tito.
Tito acts like a smart politician, "See? You already have a loyal customer. It's like that in the beginning, then it gets better."
But, Rosa is already smart.
"Um, um..." She extends her hand, "R$ 15.00."
Tito acts like a trickster. "You know, daughter, the Association is currently without funds, some residents do not want to collaborate. If you have a way to pay later..."
"But, how am I going to get my business forward if everyone asks me to pay later?"
Carina approaches the counter with the paint.
Rosa asks her, "Just the paint, dear?"
"For now, yes. Ah, Mayor Tito, I heard that the Association is in difficulties."
Tito makes a joke of it, "Yes, daughter, but you don't spread around. It’s a temporary lack of funds."
"I will help with these sheets. I’ll pay for it."
Tito sets his teeth on the street. Rosa grimaces in annoyance but says nothing, it’s better than letting goods go without receiving the money. Carina pays for her paints and the ream, Rosa gives her change.
"Thank you so much and come back soon!"
"I'm going back! Bye, Mayor Tito!"
"Your gesture will be remembered, dear!"
Carina leaves. Tito is still smiling, but his smile fades a little when he meets Rosa's frown.
MALTHUS SNACK BARCélio and Monica pay for the lunch and say goodbye to Aurélio."I received it from Seu Tito and I came to honor you soon.""I thank you for your preference, Célio. With this money, I’ll buy a broom, as the citizen said."Monica replies, "Ah, don't you mind that guy, Seu Aurélio. Yes, clean up your business, for hygiene and customers, but not for him." She turns to Célio, "I need to stop by the Cascais bakery.""I’m gonna see Cássio in the square".Monica is thrilled, "Thanks for the invitation, Cé. I loved it." She says to Aurélio, already leaving, "Bye, Seu Aurélio!""Bye!" after she left, he is mocking Célio, "how is it? 'Cé'?"Célio adds dignity, "Hey, Seu Aurélio, it’s not a good tone to make fun of a lady.""Am I missing something?"Célio talks almost to himself, "IT´S ME who is losing if I don't act soon. Time is cruel.""I can get nothing with this philosophy."Célio speaks when he leaves, "We’ll talk later, Seu Aurélio."Aurélio laughs and takes a flannel to c
IN THE POLICE STATIONCarlos is at his desk in front of Tito. The mayor wants to know what's going on in the neighborhood. The conversation already started.Tito is reacting surprised, "What? Daylight robbery?""Exactly! The boy spent the night here in the cell. But, I checked his background. Nothing. He debuted in the criminal world and paid for it. I don't think he ever tries again.""God help me not. Today's youth... Why did they say the 1980s were the lost decade? It didn't have half the problems today.""Young boy, he could be working as a supermarket assistant, or in his father's workshop... But, no, they are unoccupied today... They don't even want to watch television, nowadays they are all restless.""Do you think it's an isolated case?""He said categorically that he was not under the command of any gang. But, I trust not very much.""It was just what I needed, gangs killing each other in our neighborhood.""With the necessary tools, we will do a good job."Tito does not captu
IN MALTHUS SNACKEd enters the snack bar. He passes by and does not look at Cássio and Sandra talking at one of the tables in the background. He goes straight to the counter."What do you want now, Ed? Something more than a pastry?""What I ate this morning was the best cheese pastry in my entire life. And yes, I want one more."Aurélio looks at his wristwatch, "For kids like you, isn't it almost dinner time?""Then why can they?"Ed points to Cássio and Sandra’s table. The two continue talking."Because they are past your age," Aurélio explains to him.Ed laments, "Complicated."Aurélio laughs, "And to drink?""A cane juice cup!"Already calmer, Aurélio will prepare the juice. Ed takes the plate with the pastry with some ketchup squirts, and goes to the table in front of Cássio and Sandra. With his back to them, he starts to eat, but his ear connects to their conversation.Cássio asks her, "Are you sure you were not mistaken, honey?""Are you calling me blind or a liar?""Blind, no, a
POLICE STATION - DAY Wednesday, the routine begins. Casual amount of residents and policemen. Among them, Ricardo smiles silly, he seeks with his eyes until he finds Carlos's desk. He goes to him and sits down, "Here I am. What do you want to know?" Carlos doesn't like Ricardo's stance, "You know that our neighborhood is relatively new, Mr. Oliveira." "I know. I came here in 1997. There was almost no one on my street. It looked like a ghost town. Now that it's getting fun." "Yes, and unfortunately there is a resident who is not having any sense of fun. On Monday, I had to intervene in an armed robbery. You must have heard of it." "No, our neighborhood still doesn't have a radio or a newspaper." Ricardo's tone is always jibing and mocking. "Well, that's what happened. And yesterday, I receive an anonymous tip about clandestine electrical connections, what people call a ‘cat’." "Okay, and what do I have to do with it?" "They mentioned your address, Mr. Oliveira." Ricardo looks
CASCAIS BAKERYAnnie comes in excitedly, floating until she finds Jonas in a bad mood, and with a visible bruise from yesterday's slap."Jonas! What happened to you? Did someone try to rob the bakery yesterday?"He answers with another question, "Do we already have a criminal faction for something this big?""No, but remember that they already started with a robbery in broad daylight with Monica."Jonas has an explosion, "They should have taken her purse, so she could run out of books and starve to death!"Annie chooses a table to sit at, "Are you going to tell me what happened? Or can I try to guess now?""What do you think?""Whoever gave that mark was Monica. It looks like a woman's slap."Jonas walks away and stands behind the counter. Visibly upset."I'm sorry, Jon...""You asked her not to interfere, that we had agreed, and she came in next to closing and got in. I threw truths in her face and she reacted like that."Annie has shallow water eyes, "Honey, I'm sorry...""Don't worr
STREETS - DAYMonica follows her path, she has already turned a block. She is in the back street. She keeps walking, looking up, and some passersby notice her.Ahead, Monica is already feeling crazy and almost giving up. Until she stops walking and does a victorious smile. In Monica's view, there’s a tangle of spliced wires, obviously irregular. She looks from the top of the pole, going down to a certain house, and sees ‘number 33’. Monica smiles, triumphant, she found the irregularity. When she turns to go to the police station......Monica bumps into Fábio, only in shorts and sneakers, running. Fail."Why don't you look where—", she notices him, "Fábio?"A pseudo-charming Fábio smiles at her, "What is it? Ah, you never noticed me without a shirt, right?"Monica is indifferent, "Dude, a worthly shirtless man is just my dad. And he's better than you.""Come on! Age reaches everyone, Little Monica. And that's why I don't want to waste mine. You, not that you need it, but you could als
POLICE STATION - DAY Carlos this time sees Sandra standing at the entrance. He interrupts his laughter. "Have you been attended yet, miss?" Monica turns around and sees her too, "Sandra! What a small world." Sandra replies wryly, "Small neighborhood." "No way, look at the size of that map!" Sandra approaches, "Chief, since yesterday I made a complaint, but it seems that it didn’t give results. There are gathering kids in a group near my house and they just sit idly practically all day. Nobody knows what they want; if they are watching to steal us later." "Miss, you will have to gather more neighbors to complain to Seu Tito. We are unable to do something of this magnitude. I managed to arrest one who assaulted your friend, but a gang... I hope not, but as soon as possible we will look." "I hope there won't be a tragedy before. May my boyfriend won't cry leaning over my coffin. Excuse me." Sandra stomps away. Monica is thoughtful, "How strange... Kids attacking in daylight... S
MONICA’S LIVING ROOM - DAYAnnie confronts Monica for having argued and beaten up Jonas. Carina inadvertently ends up witnessing."Annie, calm down..."Annie is hurt, "How could you, Monica? I trusted you. I asked you not to get involved!"Monica gets supplicant, "Annie, don't you see that this story is a little weird? Jonas's family is taking this competition talk too seriously. The neighborhood is starting; we still have little shops... Try to open a bakery Downtown, or even in Tangamandápio! There they will see competition. Although it was not the case, I think it’s unfair to involve his girlfriend and future daughter-in-law.""Will we have a wedding after that?"Carina respectfully opines, "If he stops loving you because of that, then he is the fool, dear.""Annie, sit down, and let's talk calmly—" Monica gets up and tries to lead Annie to the sofa, but she dodges the other."I don't want to talk anymore, Monica. I just came to check it out of your mouth. Now I have to go home and
