“Richard Day! You're under arrest for fraud, bribery, and corruption!”
“Uhm… A case has been brought against you, and I’m simply here doing my duty,” Finn replied, a hint of nervousness in his voice.
‘Is that so?’
Sighing, Richard looked around at the officers before focusing on Finn.
“What crime did you say has been levied against me?" he asked, voice calm but edged with steel.
Just two years ago, Dalton City had been a desolate place, crippled by poverty, plagued by attacks from rival cities, and run by a corrupt government more interested in lining its own pockets than protecting its citizens.
The streets were empty, businesses had crumbled, and people had fled for their lives.
But all that changed when Richard took control.
For the sake of his fiancée Cassie’s father, the ailing mayor, Richard stepped up as acting mayor and initiated an unprecedented transformation.
Under his guidance, Dalton City rose from the ashes; infrastructure flourished, security was restored, and economic growth soared.
Richard’s leadership turned the city into a model for others, and he became widely known as its savior—a man who had sacrificed much of his own life to rebuild and protect it.
And now this was his reward.
“Who made all of these accusations?"
He simply asked in a low voice that still sent chills down Finn's back.
Yet, here she was digging a grave for him and casually throwing him into it with no hesitation.
He frowned at the realization that it was nothing but a set-up, but to what gain? That he couldn't fathom, and he needed to know why, lifting his head, he glanced at her with cold eyes,
“Why?" was his one-word question, and Cassie burst into a loud laughter and stood to her feet,
“Why, you say?? Richard, don't be a fool. Take a good look around you. Do you think you are worth any bit of this prestige, position, or wealth?!”
Scoffing she sneered at him and continued,
"Don't be delusional Richard, you're not deserving, far from it. No one wants an association with one who can't determine his roots, an orphan with no family backing.”
Straightening herself, she strode towards him, looking him dead in the eyes as she cupped his chin with her fingers, leaning to his ears, she whispered,
"You're absolutely nothing, and you're worthless. We have no use for you anymore Richard Day, where I'm headed, you can't take me there, and that's why I have decided to marry Andrew Morris, he's got all I need, and through my marriage to him, the Delaney name is about to become a household not only in Dalton City but in the whole country!”
At her revelation, it was as though cold water had been poured on Richard.
He had been a pawn in their game; all of his sacrifices and fight for justice and freedom were nothing to them; he was to be discarded as a used tissue.
A bitter smile appeared on his face, and he shook his head and sighed heavily.
They would come to regret this decision. They had no idea the reason Dalton had been in so much peace, and they would in due time.
“Take him away!!"
The men nodded and hurried to cuff Richard’s hands, as they clasped his hands with the cuffs.
Richard said nothing as he felt the coldness of the metal on his wrist, glancing at Cassie who was smirking.
With a shake of his head, he let the police push him harshly out the door, ignoring the stares and glares of those who had worked under him.
Back in the office, Cassie spread her arms wide and grinned, returning to sit regally onto Richard's old seat, taking out her phone, she smirked and dialed, at the receiver's pick, she gleamed and said,
“It's done"
Cassandra Delaney grinned as she delivered the news to her father Harold,
"Dad, it's done. The worthless prick has been taken away!! Now I'm free to marry Andrew, and build the life we've always wanted!”
Over the phone, Harold grinned and laughed loudly,
“That's great! I'm glad we finally got rid of that parasite, we have to work quickly so you can finally get married to Andrew and have power over Dalton City and beyond”
Cassie nodded enthusiastically, grinning from ear to ear. She couldn't wait to finally be with Andrew and be married to him, he was the son of the number one family, the revered Morris family of Savon City, their capital.
Being married to him was going to give her the wealth and access to power she had always craved.
With a gleaming smile, she leaned her back onto the seat, imagining the joyful events that were about to take place in her life.
She dialed the secretary and promptly gave an order,
“Get me the most expensive wine you can find, while at it, I'm celebrating my freedom!!" she announced giddily, splattering the whole place with papers that she had thrown up.
Meanwhile, back in the police van, Inspector Finn glanced at Richard at intervals, with furrowed brows and a worried expression.
He viewed Richard as an enigma. He hadn't attempted to resist arrest and had followed them willingly.
He found himself wondering what the acting mayor was up to.
Seated in his position, Richard took a peek at his phone and scoffed.
Just the other day, he had received concerning news that one of Dalton City’s known rivals was trying to make an ambush but was refraining because they knew Richard would overcome them.
Now that he was out of the mayoral seat he knew the former enemies of Dalton City were bound to attack.
Shaking his head, he glanced at his phone as a message chimed in,
‘I have words that Primse is forming an army to attack Dalton. What's your command?’
At those words, Richard smirked.
Franklyn was one of his trusted troops, as well as an ally from another country, with this information, he was certain of an incoming attack.
Not bothering to reply to the text, Richard rested his head on his seat.
It was time for a long-needed vacation, and he was about to take advantage of it.
They arrived at the prison, and Inspector Finn led Richard inside, with Richard striding in and his hands cuffed. They were headed to Inspector Finn's office when loud siren noises filled the air, and officers straightened their postures as a fleet of six luxurious cars rode into the police compound. The cars came to a stop, with a well-dressed officer hurrying down to open the back door he had come down from,Inspector Finn watched with mouth agape as a woman with long flowing red hair and voluptuous curves came down, wearing high stiletto heels, the aura around her was that of power and authority. As he watched her approach, he shuffled on his feet and gulped, before he greeted her with all the false enthusiasm he could muster.“C-chief, this is a pleasant surprise. You didn't inform us you were coming in" He greeted, trying to smile despite the turmoils in his stomach, the police Chief raised her brows at him before replying snidely,“I didn't know I was to inform you of my itine
Finn shook his head vigorously, closing his eyes tight as he did, mumbling under his breath,“I-I w-was only following orders of the mayor. " Vivienne straightened herself, “You also follow my order! You don't go behind me and execute orders without my permission!”Richard remained impassive, looking at Finn kneeling in front of him. He understood what was going on, it was obvious Finn was just a mere messenger whose hands were tied. “It’s all right, Vivienne. I’ll be fine.” He turned to Vivienne and said calmly.Vivienne swallowed hard, scratching at her temple as she watched Richard. It was as clear as day that the mayor and his daughter were nothing but ambitious but stupid people who didn't mind bringing people down to get to their aim.On the surface, the city of Dalton appeared peaceful and prosperous, but beneath this facade were various dangerous factions engaged in a power struggle. Only Richard’s presence kept these forces from making bold moves against the city. Shou
But then, as she recalled the respectful glances the manager directed at them, understanding dawned on her. Of course—it had to be because of Andrew. He was a Morris, from one of the most prominent families in the capital. Andrew's family name alone must have been enough to completely change their treatment here.Realizing this, Cassie’s eyes sparkled with admiration. Her confusion melted into a profound pride. She looked at Andrew, her lips curling into a smile. “Andrew, I’m so proud of you! It’s all because of you! Only the Morris family can have such an influence!” Andrew gave a smug smile, shrugging as though it was nothing.“Well, being a Morris has its perks,” he replied with a wink. “Enjoy, this is only the beginning. This is nothing compared to all you stand to gain with our marriage and merger”Andrew boasted with a puffed-out chest, causing Harold and Cassie to exchange a glance and beamed widely at themselves. The same thought was running through both their minds: it ha
The waiter nodded and hurried to go do her bidding. In no time, their whole table was filled with exotic and expensive dishes, as Cassandra had made sure to order the most expensive dishes on the menu,Ordering dishes like the Kobe beef, Matsutake Mushrooms, Caviar-topped lobsters, Almas Caviar, escargot as well as truffles. Each meal cost well over five million and Cassandra didn't hesitate in ordering them.Their food was arrayed in a buffet manner, and the trio enjoyed their dish to their satisfaction, The food they had ordered was much more than they could handle; after all, this was a rare opportunity, and they weren’t going to waste it.As they finished the meal and prepared themselves to leave, the door to their room opened and a gentleman wearing an expensive suit entered, smiling widely,“Ms Cassandra, Mayor, it's a pleasure and an honour to have you here. Hope the meal was to your satisfaction?”The man was no other than Nicholas Hunt, the owner of the prestigious Golden Le
Cassandra's and Harold's eyes immediately bulged as Cassie was taken aback, her mouth hanging open,“W-what the hell are you saying?" Cassie glanced at the table they had vacated and her heart began beating rapidly within her, internally cursing at Richard and the restaurant’s owner. These dishes could cost more than one million dollars. It was completely beyond her budget.Harold stepped forward, his gaze intent on the owner, he could tell that the man wasn't going to budge.“We'll pay the bill” He said with arrogance like it’s nothing to him, shoving his hands into his pocket and glancing at Andrew. His words caught Cassandra's attention and she snapped her head to gape at him, in response Harold nodded subtly before he continued,"After all, it’s just a small sum to my soon-to-be son-in-law. You clearly do not know who's standing before you and one day you'll bite your tongue!”While he spoke, Cassie subtly cast a glance at Andrew and smiled to herself, she cat walked towards him wi
One of them swallowed hard, shook his head to dispel his fears, straightening himself, he bent his head and sneered at the shop owner,“Hah! Jokes on you, he cannot appear from thin air to rescue you! So you're at our mercy”He kicked harshly at the man who cowered over, clutching at his stomach. Laughing arrogantly, another soldier crunched his boot on the poor man's heel and said loudly,“Seeing as you've dared to threaten us, I can think of several ways to silence you” he lowered himself and whispered loudly as he winked and continued,"Silence you forever, and then no one, not even the Mayor, would ever find out what happened to you. Silence you, alongside your fellow merchants!" The sickening soldier boasted, hitting his chest with his gun as his eyes shone at the thought. On the other hand, the merchants and the others who had heard the threats were filled with fear, some of them had peed on themselves, some shivering to their bones as they heard him. Sensing and smelling thei
The residents exchanged nervous glances, the weight of the evening sinking in. After a brief pause, the head of the group spoke again, his voice respectful but filled with quiet concern."Mayor, I know I’m not in a position to ask for favors, but seeing as night has fallen and the journey ahead is long, we humbly request that you stay with us for the night and continue your journey tomorrow."A chorus of agreement followed, with the other residents nodding eagerly. They looked at Richard with hopeful eyes, silently pleading for him to accept their hospitality."Yes, please stay the night.""We would be honored to host you, Mayor."They urged as Vivienne stood by watching silently with a smile that reached her eyes, but then she felt a slight pang in her heart, her eyebrows drawing together at the thought of the city not being protected by Richard any longer. She wondered how Dalton City could miss out on such a rare and influential gem.By mere commands from him, the feared soldiers o
Vivienne’s brows furrowed at his request, but she said nothing, only nodding in acknowledgment. As they journeyed down,Vivienne was dazed, staring speechless to see both sides of the streets lined with the residents of Vancovira waving flags and singing Richard's praises; some even had tears in their eyes as they bid them farewell. The procession continued with people still lining the streets until they got to the helipad that was to return them to the City; as they exited the vehicle, they could still hear the praises of the people trailing behind them while the ten disciples bowed in reverence to Richard.Vivienne looked dazedly around, her heart churning within as she followed Richard into the helicopter that was to return him to prison. Back in Dalton City, Cassandra and Harold were back in their home, wine glasses in hands as they toasted and celebrated Richard's downfall as well as the new horizon of Andrew taking over the mayoral position,“Cheers to a new dispensation, one w
