Chapter 002

They arrived at the prison, and Inspector Finn led Richard inside, with Richard striding in and his hands cuffed.

They were headed to Inspector Finn's office when loud siren noises filled the air, and officers straightened their postures as a fleet of six luxurious cars rode into the police compound.

The cars came to a stop, with a well-dressed officer hurrying down to open the back door he had come down from,

Inspector Finn watched with mouth agape as a woman with long flowing red hair and voluptuous curves came down, wearing high stiletto heels, the aura around her was that of power and authority.

As he watched her approach, he shuffled on his feet and gulped, before he greeted her with all the false enthusiasm he could muster.

“C-chief, this is a pleasant surprise. You didn't inform us you were coming in"

He greeted, trying to smile despite the turmoils in his stomach, the police Chief raised her brows at him before replying snidely,

“I didn't know I was to inform you of my itinerary or that I needed to send a message before I make my rounds"

Inspector Finn promptly shook his head and swallowed before trying to respond,

“N-no, not at all, it…”

Vivienne Duncan, the police Chief wasn't even listening to him, as her wide eyes were currently locked on Richard, she had a wide smile, a glaring contrast to the sneer that had previously colored her face, ignoring Finn, she walked over to Richard and promptly bowed, extending her hand for a handshake,

“Mayor Day! It's a pleasure to see you, what brings you by? Have you been attended to? What's the issue? I could get it fixed”

But as she reached out, her smile dropped when her eyes fell on Richard's cuffed wrists behind his back.

Her expression shifted instantly, from warmth to fury, and she whipped around to face Inspector Finn.

“What is the meaning of this, Inspector? Why is Mayor Day in cuffs? Who gave you the authority to restrain him like this?!!”

Once again, Inspector Finn swallowed and shuffled on his feet, lowering his eyes before responding,

“I-it was the mayor Delaney’s orders. The mayor and his daughter have presented a case of bribery, corruption, and misappropriation of funds against him. I was only foll…”

Smack!!!

Before he could go on with his explanation, a loud slap landed on his face, causing him to cradle his aching chin and cheeks in his palm,

“ Corruption?! You incompetent and blind idiot! You have lost the use of your brain functionalities and reasoning?!”

Vivienne charged at him, glaring at Finn with flaring nostrils. She cast a glance at Richard, the aura that he exuded sent chills down her spine. Trying to shake off the fear, she shook her head and faced Inspector Finn once more,

“You, of all people, should be the last person to carry out such a ludicrous order! Have you forgotten who was the person who single-handedly rescued your sister and those other girls who had been captured?! If not for him, your sister would probably be dead or be reduced to nothing but a prostitute!”

Vivienne snarled, and Finn, whose head was still lowered, shuddered before sinking to his knees.

Just over a year ago, Finn’s life had unraveled when his sister was kidnapped by the Black Vipers, a ruthless syndicate notorious for exploiting women as strippers and escorts for the wealthy.

Despite Finn’s status as a police officer and numerous coordinated raids, the Black Vipers remained untouchable.

The syndicate operated with impunity, and each failed operation cost more officers’ lives, leaving the police force demoralized and desperate.

In his darkest hour, Finn and a handful of trusted colleagues turned to Richard Day, who was the acting mayor at the time.

What followed was nothing short of legendary. Richard, without backup or fanfare, entered the Black Vipers’ stronghold alone.

Hours passed, and just when Finn had started to fear the worst, Richard emerged, completely unharmed, with a procession of freed women following in his wake.

Behind him, the notorious members and leader of the Black Vipers bowed in silent submission, acknowledging his power as if he were a force beyond their comprehension.

The aftermath only deepened Richard’s mystique.

The following day, the syndicate publicly donated their entire year’s earnings to Richard, a baffling gesture of surrender.

Richard, in turn, stunned the public once more—he directed every cent of that tainted fortune to foundations, schools, and orphanages, refusing to take even a portion for himself.

Vivienne watched Finn carefully, her gaze piercing as she saw the turmoil of emotion flicker across his face.

Bending over, she leaned close, her sneer cutting through the silence as she locked eyes with him,

“I'm certain you remember it all. Now tell me, how will someone as trained as you fall for such an atrocious lie?" Pointing at Richard she went on,

“How do you think that he would be involved with such petty accusations?!”

But then, as she recalled the respectful glances the manager directed at them, understanding dawned on her. Of course—it had to be because of Andrew. Andrew's family name alone must have been enough to completely change their treatment here.Realizing this, Cassie’s eyes sparkled with admiration. Her confusion melted into a profound pride. She looked at Andrew, her lips curling into a smile. “Andrew, I’m so proud of you! It’s all because of you! Only the Morris family can have such an influence!” Andrew gave a smug smile, shrugging as though it was nothing.“Well, being a Morris has its perks,” he replied with a wink. “Enjoy, this is only the beginning. This is nothing compared to all you stand to gain with our marriage and merger”Andrew boasted with a puffed-out chest, causing Harold and Cassie to exchange a glance and beamed widely at themselves. The same thought was running through both their minds: it ha

Andrew’s face tightened imperceptibly. He knew Nicholas wasn’t bluffing; the forces behind the Golden Leaf had a reach and power that even his illustrious family couldn’t challenge easily.Swallowing his pride, Andrew gave a curt nod, his voice steady despite the tension. “I see. Then, we’ll comply with your request.”Cassandra’s jaw dropped as she turned to Andrew in disbelief. “Are you serious? Mr Brady struggled to his feet, he wiped at his mouth that was filled with sand, spitting out as he glared at the men,“What do you think Mayor Richard Day would do to you if he ever found out that you have dared cross the border and brutalized us? You'll all kneel to beg his mercy that's what!”Mr Brady declared boldly as he scowled at these guys. On hearing the name Richard, they exchanged fearful glances, a flicker of dread passing through their eyes. One of the men swallowed hard; shaking his head to dispel his fears, he bent down, kicked harshly at Mr Brade who fell over, clutching at his stomach. Laughing arrogantly, one of them crunched his boot on the poor man's heel and said loudly,“Seeing as you've dared to threaten us, I can think of several ways to silence you” he lowered himself and whispered loudly as he winked and continued,"Silence you forever, and then no one, not even the Mayor, would ever find out what happened to you. The residents exchanged nervous glances, the weight of the evening sinking in. After a brief pause, the head of the group spoke again, his voice respectful but filled with quiet concern."Mayor, I know I’m not in a position to ask for favors, but seeing as night has fallen and the journey ahead is long, we humbly request that you stay with us for the night and continue your journey tomorrow."A chorus of agreement followed, with the other residents nodding eagerly. They looked at Richard with hopeful eyes, silently pleading for him to accept their hospitality."Yes, please stay the night.""We would be honored to host you, Mayor."They urged as Vivienne stood by watching silently with a smile that reached her eyes, but then she felt a slight pang in her heart, her eyebrows drawing together at the thought of the city not being protected by Richard any longer. She wondered how Dalton City could miss out on such a rare and influential gem.By mere commands from him, the feared soldiers o

Vivienne’s brows furrowed at his request, but she said nothing, only nodding in acknowledgment. As they journeyed down,Vivienne was dazed, staring speechless to see both sides of the streets lined with the residents of Vancovira waving flags and singing Richard's praises; some even had tears in their eyes as they bid them farewell. The procession continued with people still lining the streets until they got to the helipad that was to return them to the City; as they exited the vehicle, they could still hear the praises of the people trailing behind them while the ten disciples bowed in reverence to Richard.Vivienne looked dazedly around, her heart churning within as she followed Richard into the helicopter that was to return him to prison. Back in Dalton City, Cassandra and Harold were back in their home, wine glasses in hands as they toasted and celebrated Richard's downfall as well as the new horizon of Andrew taking over the mayoral position,“Cheers to a new dispensation, one w

As they rushed to follow her orders, Vivienne made calls to ensure the room was well-ventilated, painted, and cleaned. Occasionally, she glanced at Richard, who had his head held back while he meditated to himself. He was unfazed by the activities going on around him while he waited patiently to be led to whatever cell was made available to him. After it was all prepared, Vivienne gingerly escorted Richard to the cell, making sure to inform him as they went about her thoughts,“Mayor Richard, I know this place isn't befitting for someone of your status, and I have tried to make it as habitable as possible. I hope that this place gives you the comfort and peace that you seek, you're a guest and not a prisoner, hence why I have set it to a standard of comfort to help ease your stay here”Richard nodded, saying nothing as they went to the room, and as they walked the inmates who saw and recognized Richard were startled, as they watched with widened eyes,“Are my eyes possibly deceiving

"Sir, I need you to approve my leave so I can take care of my wife who's about to give birth," The man said slowly, handing over a matter to Richard. "Alright, it's approved," Richard nodded and took the letter from the man. "Thank you, sir," The man beamed happily and quickly walked out of the office. Richard sighed and sat back on the chair after the man was out. It had been three years since everything. Andrew, Cassandra, and Harold were tried and thrown into prison. Justus, Aiden, Clinton, and Robin were also thrown into prison for fraud. The citizens of Dalton City demanded that Richard come back as the Mayor of the city. After much pleas and persuasion, h

Walking out of the office, the three walked out of the mayoral office only to be greeted by about five men who were in uniforms. Seeing the men, Andrew and Harold froze and it was as though their eyes would pop out of their sockets as they stared at the men. Slowly, they began to move back as though they had seen a ghost. "Father, Andrew, what the heck is wrong with both of you?" Cassandra frowned and stopped the two who were retreating slowly. "You should also go back; they are most probably here to arrest us," Harlod whispered to Cassandra, whose eyes flashed with panic. This must be Richard's fault. They were sure he was the one who invited them over. Apart from him, no one dared to make such a big move. Also, they were not expecting it. "Please stop moving back; we are going to assume you want to run away, and we would be forced to use force on you?" One of the men stepped forward, stating in a loud, cold voice, making the three stop in their tracks. The people before them

He was just too damn dangerous."So do you still think we should take the killing seriously, or we should continue to look at him," Cassandra stared at the two men and inquired."We should get rid of him for good this time, else, he won't spare us," Harold shook his head.He knew if Richard was to know they wanted to kill him, he w
