Chapter 003

Finn shook his head vigorously, closing his eyes tight as he did, mumbling under his breath,

“I-I w-was only following orders of the mayor. "

Vivienne straightened herself, “You also follow my order! You don't go behind me and execute orders without my permission!”

Richard remained impassive, looking at Finn kneeling in front of him.

He understood what was going on,  it was obvious Finn was just a mere messenger whose hands were tied.

“It’s all right, Vivienne. I’ll be fine.” He turned to Vivienne and said calmly.

Vivienne swallowed hard, scratching at her temple as she watched Richard.

It was as clear as day that the mayor and his daughter were nothing but ambitious but stupid people who didn't mind bringing people down to get to their aim.

On the surface, the city of Dalton appeared peaceful and prosperous, but beneath this facade were various dangerous factions engaged in a power struggle.

Only Richard’s presence kept these forces from making bold moves against the city.

Should Richard step down as acting mayor and word of this spread, they were likely to plunge the city into chaos immediately.

The prosperity Dalton had enjoyed would vanish in an instant, and the people would once again suffer as they had in the past.

Richard’s imprisonment was actually not a concern for himself, but a disaster for all of Dalton’s citizens.

Unfortunately, the mayor's family was too stupid to realize this.

Rubbing at her drawn eyebrows, Vivienne raised her head to meet Richard's eyes,

“Sir, I know I am too insignificant to render help or offer you my help, but please, I wish to help you. Is there anything you might need help with?? I'll do all I can to make it happen”

Watching her, Richard smirked.

“Well, there's one thing…”

“I'd like to travel down to Vancovira”

"Vancovira?" She reiterated and Richard nodded,

“The same Vancovira that borders us and Primse? The same Primse where…”

She stalled her words, and Richard nodded,

“The very same"

Vivienne blinked and gaped at him, before nodding her head. Taking out her phone, she glanced at Richard and back at her phone, her eyebrows still creased as she watched him.

He was an enigma, to say the least; everyone knew of his great achievement, how Primse had constantly attacked Dalton City, forcing her people into slavery and all.

Richard had successfully conquered Primse and captured their leader; she couldn't understand why he wanted to venture near their border.

Yet she immediately arranged for his transportation, after securing it, she took her eyes off her phone and informed him,

“Your helicopter will be arriving in an hour.”

Richard nodded.

“Till then, I'll be waiting in my cell"

Watching him walk away, Vivienne made to talk and convince him to wait in her office, but she knew it was futile. Heaving a deep breath, she dialed a number.

As soon as the receiver picked up, Vivienne wasted no time in speaking up,

“Deputy Sir, there's been a situation right here in my office. Mayor Richard Day has been accused of what I consider to be ludicrous accusations. I'm told that it's Mayor Delaney who called for his arrest. Do you mind looking into this matter and getting to the bottom of it?”

At the same time, Cassie had arrived at the Golden Leaf Restaurant.

The Golden Leaf was the most exclusive spot in town, where reservations were made months in advance, and each meal could easily run five thousand dollars or more. It was a must-visit for the city's elite, a place where the wealthy came to see and be seen.

Tonight, with an air of triumph, Cassie had her arm looped through Andrew's, striding confidently into the restaurant. Her head held high, she couldn't wait to celebrate her “victory” over Richard in such a high-class setting.

When they approached the reception desk, the manager instantly recognized them and approached with a wide smile. But Cassie wasn’t so quick to smile back. Her gaze narrowed, and she barely contained a sneer.

Just a few months earlier, this same manager had dismissed her from the restaurant when she’d tried to ask for a discount, showing her no respect at all.

Even when mentioning she was the mayor's daughter, he’d brushed her off and rudely escorted her out without a second thought.

Now, though, he bowed politely and, to her shock, warmly welcomed them.

“You're very welcome to The Golden Leaf, Ma'am and Sirs. Please allow me to personally escort you to your private room for the evening.”  He said, his tone deferential.

He led them to an exclusive elevator, which took them up several flights to the restaurant’s opulent fifth-floor VIP suite, reserved for the most elite clientele.

The suite was nothing short of breathtaking, lavishly decorated with rare artwork and luxurious furnishings.

The manager gestured to James, their waiter for the evening, and announced before he left. “Everything here tonight is on the house. Please, let us know if there’s anything more we can do to serve you. It’s an honor to have you with us.”

Three weeks ago, his boss had instructed that whenever Richard or any of his friends and family came to dine here, they were to receive the highest level of service, and everything would be complimentary.

Knowing that Cassandra was Richard's fiancée, he dared not show even the slightest neglect this time.

Cassie’s eyes widened in disbelief as she took in the splendor of the suite.

She knew this room was reserved strictly for VIPs of the highest status, and her father, even as mayor, had never been granted access.

The idea that tonight they could dine here—completely free of charge—felt surreal.

What had changed?
