Finn shook his head vigorously, closing his eyes tight as he did, mumbling under his breath,
“I-I w-was only following orders of the mayor. "
Vivienne straightened herself, “You also follow my order! You don't go behind me and execute orders without my permission!”
Richard remained impassive, looking at Finn kneeling in front of him.
He understood what was going on, it was obvious Finn was just a mere messenger whose hands were tied.
“It’s all right, Vivienne. I’ll be fine.” He turned to Vivienne and said calmly.
Vivienne swallowed hard, scratching at her temple as she watched Richard.
It was as clear as day that the mayor and his daughter were nothing but ambitious but stupid people who didn't mind bringing people down to get to their aim.
On the surface, the city of Dalton appeared peaceful and prosperous, but beneath this facade were various dangerous factions engaged in a power struggle.
Only Richard’s presence kept these forces from making bold moves against the city.
Should Richard step down as acting mayor and word of this spread, they were likely to plunge the city into chaos immediately.
The prosperity Dalton had enjoyed would vanish in an instant, and the people would once again suffer as they had in the past.
Richard’s imprisonment was actually not a concern for himself, but a disaster for all of Dalton’s citizens.
Unfortunately, the mayor's family was too stupid to realize this.
Rubbing at her drawn eyebrows, Vivienne raised her head to meet Richard's eyes,
“Sir, I know I am too insignificant to render help or offer you my help, but please, I wish to help you. Is there anything you might need help with?? I'll do all I can to make it happen”
Watching her, Richard smirked.
“Well, there's one thing…”
“I'd like to travel down to Vancovira”
"Vancovira?" She reiterated and Richard nodded,
“The same Vancovira that borders us and Primse? The same Primse where…”
She stalled her words, and Richard nodded,
“The very same"
Vivienne blinked and gaped at him, before nodding her head. Taking out her phone, she glanced at Richard and back at her phone, her eyebrows still creased as she watched him.
He was an enigma, to say the least; everyone knew of his great achievement, how Primse had constantly attacked Dalton City, forcing her people into slavery and all.
Richard had successfully conquered Primse and captured their leader; she couldn't understand why he wanted to venture near their border.
Yet she immediately arranged for his transportation, after securing it, she took her eyes off her phone and informed him,
“Your helicopter will be arriving in an hour.”
Richard nodded.
“Till then, I'll be waiting in my cell"
Watching him walk away, Vivienne made to talk and convince him to wait in her office, but she knew it was futile. Heaving a deep breath, she dialed a number.
As soon as the receiver picked up, Vivienne wasted no time in speaking up,
“Deputy Sir, there's been a situation right here in my office. Mayor Richard Day has been accused of what I consider to be ludicrous accusations. I'm told that it's Mayor Delaney who called for his arrest. Do you mind looking into this matter and getting to the bottom of it?”
At the same time, Cassie had arrived at the Golden Leaf Restaurant.
The Golden Leaf was the most exclusive spot in town, where reservations were made months in advance, and each meal could easily run five thousand dollars or more. It was a must-visit for the city's elite, a place where the wealthy came to see and be seen.
Tonight, with an air of triumph, Cassie had her arm looped through Andrew's, striding confidently into the restaurant. Her head held high, she couldn't wait to celebrate her “victory” over Richard in such a high-class setting.
When they approached the reception desk, the manager instantly recognized them and approached with a wide smile. But Cassie wasn’t so quick to smile back. Her gaze narrowed, and she barely contained a sneer.
Just a few months earlier, this same manager had dismissed her from the restaurant when she’d tried to ask for a discount, showing her no respect at all.
Even when mentioning she was the mayor's daughter, he’d brushed her off and rudely escorted her out without a second thought.
Now, though, he bowed politely and, to her shock, warmly welcomed them.
“You're very welcome to The Golden Leaf, Ma'am and Sirs. Please allow me to personally escort you to your private room for the evening.” He said, his tone deferential.
He led them to an exclusive elevator, which took them up several flights to the restaurant’s opulent fifth-floor VIP suite, reserved for the most elite clientele.
The suite was nothing short of breathtaking, lavishly decorated with rare artwork and luxurious furnishings.
The manager gestured to James, their waiter for the evening, and announced before he left. “Everything here tonight is on the house. Please, let us know if there’s anything more we can do to serve you. It’s an honor to have you with us.”
Three weeks ago, his boss had instructed that whenever Richard or any of his friends and family came to dine here, they were to receive the highest level of service, and everything would be complimentary.
Knowing that Cassandra was Richard's fiancée, he dared not show even the slightest neglect this time.
Cassie’s eyes widened in disbelief as she took in the splendor of the suite.
She knew this room was reserved strictly for VIPs of the highest status, and her father, even as mayor, had never been granted access.
The idea that tonight they could dine here—completely free of charge—felt surreal.
What had changed?
But then, as she recalled the respectful glances the manager directed at them, understanding dawned on her. Of course—it had to be because of Andrew. He was a Morris, from one of the most prominent families in the capital. Andrew's family name alone must have been enough to completely change their treatment here.Realizing this, Cassie’s eyes sparkled with admiration. Her confusion melted into a profound pride. She looked at Andrew, her lips curling into a smile. “Andrew, I’m so proud of you! It’s all because of you! Only the Morris family can have such an influence!” Andrew gave a smug smile, shrugging as though it was nothing.“Well, being a Morris has its perks,” he replied with a wink. “Enjoy, this is only the beginning. This is nothing compared to all you stand to gain with our marriage and merger”Andrew boasted with a puffed-out chest, causing Harold and Cassie to exchange a glance and beamed widely at themselves. The same thought was running through both their minds: it ha
The waiter nodded and hurried to go do her bidding. In no time, their whole table was filled with exotic and expensive dishes, as Cassandra had made sure to order the most expensive dishes on the menu,Ordering dishes like the Kobe beef, Matsutake Mushrooms, Caviar-topped lobsters, Almas Caviar, escargot as well as truffles. Each meal cost well over five million and Cassandra didn't hesitate in ordering them.Their food was arrayed in a buffet manner, and the trio enjoyed their dish to their satisfaction, The food they had ordered was much more than they could handle; after all, this was a rare opportunity, and they weren’t going to waste it.As they finished the meal and prepared themselves to leave, the door to their room opened and a gentleman wearing an expensive suit entered, smiling widely,“Ms Cassandra, Mayor, it's a pleasure and an honour to have you here. Hope the meal was to your satisfaction?”The man was no other than Nicholas Hunt, the owner of the prestigious Golden Le
Cassandra's and Harold's eyes immediately bulged as Cassie was taken aback, her mouth hanging open,“W-what the hell are you saying?" Cassie glanced at the table they had vacated and her heart began beating rapidly within her, internally cursing at Richard and the restaurant’s owner. These dishes could cost more than one million dollars. It was completely beyond her budget.Harold stepped forward, his gaze intent on the owner, he could tell that the man wasn't going to budge.“We'll pay the bill” He said with arrogance like it’s nothing to him, shoving his hands into his pocket and glancing at Andrew. His words caught Cassandra's attention and she snapped her head to gape at him, in response Harold nodded subtly before he continued,"After all, it’s just a small sum to my soon-to-be son-in-law. You clearly do not know who's standing before you and one day you'll bite your tongue!”While he spoke, Cassie subtly cast a glance at Andrew and smiled to herself, she cat walked towards him wi
One of them swallowed hard, shook his head to dispel his fears, straightening himself, he bent his head and sneered at the shop owner,“Hah! Jokes on you, he cannot appear from thin air to rescue you! So you're at our mercy”He kicked harshly at the man who cowered over, clutching at his stomach. Laughing arrogantly, another soldier crunched his boot on the poor man's heel and said loudly,“Seeing as you've dared to threaten us, I can think of several ways to silence you” he lowered himself and whispered loudly as he winked and continued,"Silence you forever, and then no one, not even the Mayor, would ever find out what happened to you. Silence you, alongside your fellow merchants!" The sickening soldier boasted, hitting his chest with his gun as his eyes shone at the thought. On the other hand, the merchants and the others who had heard the threats were filled with fear, some of them had peed on themselves, some shivering to their bones as they heard him. Sensing and smelling thei
The residents exchanged nervous glances, the weight of the evening sinking in. After a brief pause, the head of the group spoke again, his voice respectful but filled with quiet concern."Mayor, I know I’m not in a position to ask for favors, but seeing as night has fallen and the journey ahead is long, we humbly request that you stay with us for the night and continue your journey tomorrow."A chorus of agreement followed, with the other residents nodding eagerly. They looked at Richard with hopeful eyes, silently pleading for him to accept their hospitality."Yes, please stay the night.""We would be honored to host you, Mayor."They urged as Vivienne stood by watching silently with a smile that reached her eyes, but then she felt a slight pang in her heart, her eyebrows drawing together at the thought of the city not being protected by Richard any longer. She wondered how Dalton City could miss out on such a rare and influential gem.By mere commands from him, the feared soldiers o
Vivienne’s brows furrowed at his request, but she said nothing, only nodding in acknowledgment. As they journeyed down,Vivienne was dazed, staring speechless to see both sides of the streets lined with the residents of Vancovira waving flags and singing Richard's praises; some even had tears in their eyes as they bid them farewell. The procession continued with people still lining the streets until they got to the helipad that was to return them to the City; as they exited the vehicle, they could still hear the praises of the people trailing behind them while the ten disciples bowed in reverence to Richard.Vivienne looked dazedly around, her heart churning within as she followed Richard into the helicopter that was to return him to prison. Back in Dalton City, Cassandra and Harold were back in their home, wine glasses in hands as they toasted and celebrated Richard's downfall as well as the new horizon of Andrew taking over the mayoral position,“Cheers to a new dispensation, one w
As they rushed to follow her orders, Vivienne made calls to ensure the room was well-ventilated, painted, and cleaned. Occasionally, she glanced at Richard, who had his head held back while he meditated to himself. He was unfazed by the activities going on around him while he waited patiently to be led to whatever cell was made available to him. After it was all prepared, Vivienne gingerly escorted Richard to the cell, making sure to inform him as they went about her thoughts,“Mayor Richard, I know this place isn't befitting for someone of your status, and I have tried to make it as habitable as possible. I hope that this place gives you the comfort and peace that you seek, you're a guest and not a prisoner, hence why I have set it to a standard of comfort to help ease your stay here”Richard nodded, saying nothing as they went to the room, and as they walked the inmates who saw and recognized Richard were startled, as they watched with widened eyes,“Are my eyes possibly deceiving
Oblivious to the planning against his life, Richard had awoken the next morning ready to enjoy his current peace and quiet, but that plan was far-fetched as some policemen had come on Vivienne's orders to escort him to a luxurious restaurant .When they got to their destination where Vivienne was waiting for him with a warm smile, Richard quirked his eyebrows and shook his head subtly.“Mayor Richard, I hope you're doing well this morning and that your living arrangement is to your liking?”In response, Richard shrugged his shoulders, just as one of the men pulled out a seat and he sat,“What's all this? And this fuss?" Richard questioned as he spread his arm to the array of food on the table, Vivienne's cheeks tinged a bit before she sat up to respond,“I just felt it right to treat you to a hearty meal” was her simple response as her gaze remained on Richard, who raised an eyebrow at her,“This is really unnecessary. The hospitality isn't needed" Pausing for a second, he sighed and
