Chapter 34

The leader raised his hand, signaling his men to attack. "Get him!" he roared, spittle flying from his mouth, his face contorted in rage.

But before any of them could move, Richard’s world suddenly froze.

Time had stopped.

The leader’s outstretched hand hung motionless in the air, his snarl frozen on his lips. The crazed crowd, mid-charge, were like statues, their expressions twisted in wild hunger. Flames flickered in place, unmoving. Everything was suspended in eerie silence.

Richard exhaled, his mind clear, knowing exactly what he had to do.

He moved quickly to Mia, who was standing helpless, her hands still tied. With precision, he cut through her bonds and scooped her into his arms. She was weightless in the frozen world, her wide eyes locked in a moment of fear.

But this wasn’t over yet.

Richard set Mia down at a safe distance from the camp, behind a pile of rubble far enough away that she wouldn’t be caught in the blast. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, glancing back
