Chapter 166

The sun had not yet fully risen that morning when Richard saw his father walking with a cane. Although age and health conditions forced many people to use wheelchairs, his father refused firmly.

James seemed reluctant to look old and weak. Everyone there would consider it natural if he used an assistive device such as a wheelchair, but he was instead tough and defiant.

"What's he doing with it?" Richard observed the old man's slow but steady steps. James was determined to maintain his little independence and was still trying to show that he was capable and tough.

Richard couldn't help his curiosity. He was quite disturbed by his father's behavior, which made him even more anxious. "Why doesn't my dad just use his wheelchair?" he asked Smith, who was on hand to assist Richard despite the early hour.

With an understanding look, Smith replied, "He feels more comfortable using a cane, sir. The wheelchair makes him feel more restricted like he's still in his prime."
