All through the bail process and up until the point where Chris walked out of the police station, he was in shock. A while ago, he didn’t even have the hope of paying a huge sum of $5000 for his bail. But then a savior swooped in and paid.
It was unbelievable!
Fortunately for him, he had to believe because he had his freedom now. And now, he wanted to get back to his job as quickly as possible and not let his family know that he had been at the police station. He had already lost his girlfriend, he didn’t want to go through the heartache of losing his job and having his father disappointed in him.
A few steps forward, he saw an elderly man standing beside a black car. However, the man was all too familiar to him, “Uncle Steve?”
“Is that you?” He rushed toward the old man quickly. Steven Jackson was his neighbor, an old man who had always helped him and his family in every little way. Seeing him there, Chris thought that the old man had helped him once again.
He held the old man’s hand with a look of gratitude, “Thank you, Uncle. You saved me. I would be rotting in there if you had not come for me.”
“Chris…” The old man only smiled, slowly letting go of his hand making Chris frown. Why was the old man pulling away?
“You don’t have to thank me, Mr. Chris.” The old man bowed, with so much respect causing Chris’s frown to go even deeper.
“Mr?” Chris was confused. “Uncle Steve, what’s wrong? You are acting so weird.”
On the other hand, Steve was not fazed by Chris’s question, he only turned to open the car door, “Get in.”
Chris was beyond shocked at this moment, “You own this car?” He quickly ran around the car and he could attest to the fact that the car was an expensive one, luxurious, and one only those wealthy masters would drive.
He could never believe that the old man who lived in a poor neighborhood could own such a car. How did the old man even afford $5000 easily for his bail?
“Uncle Steve, are you into gambling?” Chris blurted out before even thinking. He covered his mouth quickly and shot Steve an apologetic look.
However, once again, Steve smiled but this time, he chuckled heartily, looking at Chris with a doting expression. “You are going to find out soon enough whether I am into gambling or not.”
“Get in.” He pointed at the car, directing Chris to get in.
Chris stood there for a few minutes but then he knew the old man wouldn’t be able to harm him. As a good citizen of the country, he was determined to find out whether there was an illegal scheme going on and he might be able to report it as he should.
“You better not hide anything from me, Uncle,” Chris warned sternly as the old man got into the car. Soon, the car started and the drive lasted for twenty minutes before they drove through a large open gate. The car then stopped before a large manor that had statues, trees, and even a fountain occupying the front yard. It gave an antique vibe yet modern.
The whole place screamed money and Chris knew he could never be welcomed in a place like that.
“Why have you brought me here? Do you want me to be embarrassed?” Chris was cautious as the old man opened the door and he got out. But the scene that greeted him as he looked straight at the entrance of the manor shocked him.
There were two rows of neatly dressed people lined before the entrance and he was sure there were more than twenty. How could a place house this many people?!
“Why are they here? Who are they?” He asked.
“Your servants,” Steve answered proudly.
“Welcome, young master Chris!” The servants’ voice boomed throughout the whole manor and Chris froze in shock. His head was reeling from what they had just said.
Was this some sick joke? Him? A young master? He could say that he was young but a master was taking it too far!
“You are playing a prank on me, right, Uncle?” Chris smiled, uneasily, seeking clarification.
“Wait until you get inside.” There was a subtle smirk on Steve’s face that shocked Chris. When did this man get this cunning? Steve led him into the manor and as he walked, the servants spread apart and lined up behind him, following him into the mansion.
He looked around, wondering whether they were trying to kidnap him. He knew that some rich people were engaged in trafficking and they could sell him at a high price. However, he was quickly distracted by the grandeur of the building. It was simply luxurious and opulent.
Soon, the grand door leading inside the manor opened, and Chris's eyes zeroed in on a man sitting on a luxurious chair.
He frowned, “Dad, what are you doing here?”

You Have No Power
Gerald had long left the hospital, however, his face had deteriorated and he had also refused treatment from the hospital. He refused to let any doctor touch his face apart from Doctor Blackman. However, no matter how he reached out to the doctor, he never got a reply. Now, he was staying at the secluded house Baron had grudgingly provided for him with an attendant by his side. “What is he saying? Did you tell him I agreed to the surgery he proposed before now?” He asked desperately. “I am sorry,” The attendant apologized with pity in her eyes. “He has warned me to stop contacting him otherwise he is going to involve the police.”“Ohh…” Gerald let out, his finger nicking his flesh as he was slowly immersed in worry. The doctors had said he had a tendency to have a stroke now due to the way his health had deteriorated. But then, he wasn't ready to give up. He was going to find adequate help by all means. “Contact Baron.” He ordered the attendant. At this point, he had no choice b
Released
Five days later…“Have you heard?” A police officer rushed to the detective in charge of Chris’s case with a bewildered look.“What is it?” The detective asked, his gaze displeased. He had a lot on his mind, he was trying to connect the Westminster family to the bomblast but there were no leads. He also has not been able to contact Chase about their ongoing deal. “Reid has been found.” The officer said and immediately the detective whipped his head in his direction. “What…what do you mean?” He asked shakily. “Oh, you don’t know?” The officer laughed scornfully. “I thought you were the detective in charge of the case.” Of course, he knew this beforehand but then they all knew how much the detective had been so hyper about the case.“What do you mean by that?” The detective snapped! “It’s my case and I know everything about it.” He lied through his teeth so he wouldn't be seen as a fool. He was the one in charge but how could he not know? “I guess you know then…” The officer chuckle
Emptiness
“Family member?” Gerald muttered, his eyes flickering to the empty space in the corner of the ward. He was just like that, empty. His life, empty. On the other hand, the nurse wondered why he was thinking deeply about a family member. Did a billionaire like him not have someone to call his own?“Don’t you have one?” She probed. She was just curiously asking but Gerald felt like she was mocking him.“I do.” He blurted out without thinking. “Can you give me their names or contact?” She asked joyfully, feeling like there was progress. At least, if he had a family, they could help oversee his checkup. “Baron…” He whispered. “My son, Baron Rice.” The feel of those words on his mouth left a bitter feeling. He didn't have a son, he just had people he could use. “Okay, I will contact him. Rest well, for now.” The nurse quickly left. It was easy to get Baron’s contact especially when she contacted the police about Gerald’s case. They were overseeing the bomb blast incident. An hour later,
Sweet Smile
Gerald’s frail body was spread on the hospital bed while he stared at the white ceiling in frozen shock. He didn't know how he got there or how long he had been there. He just opened his eyes to see that he was there. He called for Chase, but there was nothing. No one was by his side. The door opened and he whirled his head to the side weakly. He saw a nurse walking in with the sweetest smile on her face and in that moment, his heart shifted a little. No one had ever smiled so sweetly at him before. Not even his parents. All his life, he was surrounded by misery. “Excuse me, good day.” She greeted. “I see you are awake. I would like to do a quick check-up on you. You don’t mind if I touch you, right?”Gerald couldn't speak, so he only nodded. The nurse moved closer, and though he didn't suffer any burns from the blast, she noticed that his face was a bit weird with little bruises here and there. He wasn't like this when he came in with the emergency unit. “Uhm, Mr. Rice, did you
We Will Find Reid
It had been two days since Chris had been wallowing in the police cell with the detective in charge of his case passing mocking remarks to him. However, Chris was counting down in his mind, until the time his father would make a move. With the true Westminster power, he should be out in a day. However, it was now stretching to the third day. “Hey, you.” The detective walked to his cell, with a sneer that had been plastered on his face for the last 48hours. He gripped the bars and poked his face between the bars. His mashed-up face between those bars made Chris cringe a bit and he pulled away, due to the stench emanating from him. “Aren't you going to go home? You stink.” He hissed. “Why would I?” The detective smiled, his yellow teeth more visible. “When I personally escort you into jail, then I will leave for home. For now, I just want to watch your misery—”Ring!Ring!!!The detective’s head whirled around when sudden ringing sounds filled everywhere. Different stations were ge
Everything Falling Apart
Chase frowned, confusion riddled him, “What do you mean I was fooled?”In that moment, Gerald chuckled, “Like I said, you are a loyal dog who would never change its stripes. Dogs like you…” He licked his lips, taunting Chase even more. “Will always be led around, used, deceived, and dumped.” “Shut the fuck up and tell me the truth! Did you send Greg to kill me or not?” Chase barked, holding onto the old man’s shoulder, “I signed a document. Did you send him to do that too?”Gerald wasn't moved by his barking, he only continued to smile. No answer. He was reeling in Chase’s pain. “Damn it!” Chase cursed and slowly let go of the old man. His feet moved backward as he stepped out of the basement. As soon as the door closed behind him, he stumbled to the ground, struggling to even breathe. Darkness had overshadowed the mansion, the night sky brooding heavily as a storm was about to happen. A storm was happening in Chase’s mind too. All along, he had his suspicions. Chris had easily ag
