"A thief?" Elijah asked, tilting his head slightly, amusement flickering in his eyes.

"Give me your phone," the man said more firmly, stepping closer. "And your car key. Every dollar you have, too."

Elijah chuckled, shaking his head. "First of all, thinking you'll get my phone is a joke. Secondly, asking for my car keys?" He let out another laugh. "Now that’s even funnier."

The thief scowled, gripping the knife tighter.

"You know what? I'm in a hurry." Elijah reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills. "Here," he said, holding them up. "This is $5,000… or more, I think. Have it and just leave.”

The thief hesitated, his eyes widening as he snatched the cash. He quickly counted through it, his fingers shaking slightly. His breathing hitched when he realized it was actually $7,100.

But greed had already taken hold.

"Drop your car key and the phone too," he demanded, his knife still pointed at Elijah. His confidence grew as he saw how easily Elijah had ha

Nathaniel’s father frowned, his sharp eyes narrowing. “What do you mean by some guy shut down the proposal?”Nathaniel exhaled through his nose, still feeling the sting of the interaction. “I mean exactly that. I approached Celestine Valencia, but instead of responding to me, she let some man sitting beside her take charge. He questioned everything—picked apart our security protocols, pointed out flaws, and made it seem like working with us was a risk instead of an opportunity. By the time he was done talking, Celestine had lost interest, and I had no way to counter him.”His father’s expression darkened with anger. “And you just let that happen?” He scoffed, shaking his head in disappointment. “You let some nobody dismiss years of our research and development like it was nothing?” He stood up abruptly, his hands tightening into fists at his sides.Nathaniel clenched his jaw. “I—”“I might have been wrong handing Mercer Innovations over to you,” his father interrupted, his tone sharp

Elijah leaned slightly against the wall, his expression calm. “It’s a thank-you tip.”Celeste let out a soft chuckle and shook her head. “Thank you, but I can’t accept it. You’ve already paid for everything. There’s no need to give me anything extra. It’s my duty.”Elijah shook his head. “Have it. Moreover, I love how you work. I’ll take your contact and call you directly next time when there’s an issue.”Celeste hesitated for a moment before finally taking the money. “Alright. Thank you.”She then took his phone from the table, quickly typed in her number, and saved it. Handing it back to him, she said, “Now you can reach me whenever.”Elijah nodded. “Thank you, Celeste. It’s really late—are you sure you can leave safely?”Celeste smiled and waved off his concern. “Oh yes, I brought the hospital car, so that’s not a problem. I’m heading back to the hospital.”Elijah gave a small nod and walked her to the door. He watched as she got into the car and drove off before locking the main g

Elijah's eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the morning light. He blinked a few times, instinctively reaching toward the other side of the bed—only to find it empty. His brows furrowed.Sierra wasn’t there. His gaze shifted, noticing the used drip now removed and placed neatly on the nightstand. That was enough to get him fully awake. He sat up, running a hand through his hair before swinging his legs off the bed.Where did she go?Pushing himself up, he walked out of the room, his bare feet making soft sounds against the floor. As he stepped into the hallway, a faint but distinct aroma drifted toward him.Food? His eyes narrowed slightly as he followed the scent. The closer he got to the kitchen, the stronger it became—warm, rich, and unmistakably homemade. Sierra was cooking.Elijah walked toward the kitchen, the scent of rich, simmering stew filling the air. As he stepped inside, he saw Sierra standing by the stove, her back to him, completely focused on what she was making. His gaze

Sierra’s hand froze mid-stir. Her heart skipped a beat, and she felt her face heat up even more. "W-What?" She turned her head slightly to look at him, eyes wide.Elijah just shrugged, like he hadn’t just thrown her into complete disarray. "I’m just curious," he said, his gaze locked onto hers. "Every time I look at you, you just get prettier."Sierra swallowed hard, gripping the spoon in her hand tighter. "I—uhm—Elijah…" She couldn’t even form a proper response.Elijah chuckled at her reaction, clearly amused. "I should say it more often," he mused, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "You look cute when you're flustered.”Sierra quickly turned her attention back to the pot, trying to focus, but her heart was racing too fast to concentrate.Elijah’s eyes trailed down to the silky nightgown Sierra was wearing. His gaze darkened slightly with curiosity and something else she couldn’t quite place."You took your bath this morning and changed into this?" he asked, his voice low.Si

Sierra nodded. “Yeah, she’s with me now for the time being. You know she rents, so I figured it’s better for her to stay with me now that my parents aren’t around.”Elijah frowned slightly. “Where are your parents?”“They relocated, so I’m the one here alone,” she replied.“Really? Relocated?” He asked, his frown deepening.Sierra nodded. “Yeah, due to business and—”Before she could finish, Elijah’s phone began ringing.Elijah brought out his phone and saw an unknown number flashing on the screen. He hesitated for a second before answering."Hello, who's this?" he asked.A familiar yet unexpected voice came through the line. "Hello, Elijah. How are you? This is Sierra’s mom."Elijah's brows lifted in surprise. His gaze immediately shifted to Sierra, who was focused on the stove, unaware of the conversation. The timing was uncanny—they had just been talking about her parents, and now her mother was calling."Hello, Mom," Elijah quickly responded, adjusting his tone.Mrs. Lane’s voice
