Arnold went to answer the knock on the door with apprehension. His arms were suddenly stiff and his neck felt like it had twisted in one direction and couldn't straighten any longer.
Still, he led his body toward the door and asked, "Who's there?""I'm the maid assign—"Before she could finish speaking, he opened the door. Relief washed over him as he stared at the smallish woman in her cleaning uniform in front of him.For a moment there, he had thought it was someone related to his first quest. The Nexus had not yet told him the details of the quest and he was feeling queasy already. What would this quest be? It seemed the Nexus liked to keep his on his toes."Can I come in?" the woman asked. He looked down at her and moved aside as she rolled her cleaning trolley into his hotel room. He'd been so consumed in his thoughts that he hadn't remembered to let her in.He wanted to say sorry but he decided against it. The old him would have blurted out sorry at the speed of light. Then again, the old him would not be in this situation, in this hotel room. And certainly not have such privileges. He exhaled, trying to let go of the pent-up fear and thoughts that was gathering at the base of his throat.'Arnold'He turned towards the maid, wondering why she was calling him and how the heck she knew his name."What?"She looked at him with creased brows."You called my —"'Arnold'He heard the voice again and realized it was actually the voice in his head speaking.'Good grief, it's me. Now, I need you to get moving. It's time to get the wheels turning for your first quest. Go to the elevator and down to the lobby. That's where your quest will take place.'Arnold moved like he was on something — drugs, maybe. He looked ahead, not greeting anyone on his way, only preoccupied with the thoughts in his head. When he got to the lobby, it was still the same as it had been the night before, but something in the atmosphere was different. He recognized the people in the lobby. At least, he recognized some of the people who'd either aided in his humiliation the night before or who had humiliated him. He watched them as their faces changed at the sight of him — his new, hot gentleman look.Something rose within him, causing him to automatically lift his shoulders up.While thinking about what the heck the quest was all about and why it would take place in the lobby, he almost lost his footing."Sorry," the rude receptionist from the night before said. She'd been watching all his movements. He acted like he hadn't heard her, making a point to look at anywhere but at her.She bent over the counter and extended her hand out to him for a handshake. Even though he wasn't staring at her directly, he could see the outline of her bosom almost completely spilling out from her dress as she bent. It was a tactic to get his attention by all means."I didn't quite get to have a conversation with you last night," she said in the most seductive voice he'd ever heard. He swallowed hard and did a 360° turn towards the sofa at the middle of the lobby, acting like she wasn't talking to him. It was hard, but it was also quite telling the way people changed around one once you had some money. He'd gone from being humiliated at the altar to being seduced by some random, mean receptionist. It didn't get more surprising than that. He hoped it didn't, at least. He could still hear the murmurs. They'd erupted as soon as he came into view looking like a tall glass of wine. He was getting more uncomfortable as the minutes went by and more eyes turned to stare at him.He whispered to the voice in his head, "What now, huh? What am I to do next to get the quest started?"Nexus spoke: 'This quest involves leveling up and will aid you in your general quest for revenge. It’s a lesson for you per se. You’ll be cake to build yourself up, increase your confidence level, and boost your ego too. What you're to do now is to walk up to anyone here you think is a business man and introduce yourself as a fellow business man.'Arnold's eyebrows shot up. "What? But I'm not a bus—"'Keep still and listen. I'm not done giving the full details yet. Due to the fact you accepted the system and have a cause that aligns with it, which is to get your revenge and also get richer, this first quest is related to both but in a unique way.'A screen crossed into his line of vision and he leaned on the wall so he wouldn't fall.[Quest Generated]- Inform three people and tell them to invest in your business.- Quest reward: 100 lavish point per person, +1 level up- Quest failure: All Nexus points will be untouchable for one week. You won’t be able to spend the money and will be considered useless. Then the screen was gone.He looked around the hotel lobby suddenly, and from their dressing, he could tell the business men and women apart. He could spot the influential and rich men in suits that screamed money. Now, he had to think of a business that wouldn't make him look stupid in front of them. Anything.Something clicked in his head. He had prior experience in selling groceries so he'd stick to the guns he knew. After he thought of something random and related to groceries, he scanned all the business men he could find and decided to pick the first person he would walk up to and discuss with. He picked one man in a sharp navy blue suit and walked up to him, striking up a conversation immediately."Hi," he said, sitting directly opposite the man.The man glanced at him from the morning paper he was reading and barely nodded to acknowledge him.Arnold wasn't deterred. He launched into his speech. "I have a business proposal I would like to run by you. It has something to do with a grocery business. I was thinking I could tell you in case you'd be interested in investing in it so that I —""Excuse me?"Arnold stopped, mouth open. He'd been going on and and on that when the man finally cut him off, it was so abrupt he felt like he'd been run into by a car on the street."I don't have time for all that crap.""Sorry, I —" Arnold started, but the man wasn't having it."Do you think you can just walk up to strangers and start talking about some dream business that's in your head? Move on, mister."Arnold stood and walked away so that the man wouldn't keep on raising his voice at him and cause a scene. He'd had enough of humiliating experiences. He didn't need to add yet another one.Technically, he hadn't yet failed the quest, but he had also not completely succeeded. He had been bold enough to take the leap and speak but he had not been able to convince the man to listen further. On to the next one, he thought. He had to try another person. He scanned the lobby for someone else. Someone more approachable. He zeroed in on a blonde man with a very athletic looking body and a face that he was sure wasn't American.Arnold took a deep breath and walked up to him. He held out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Arnold."The blond man looked up at him from his phone and shook his hand firmly. "Mr Larry."A good start, Arnold thought. He began to tell him about the business.Mr Larry watched him with an unreadable expression. Then, he reached for a cigarette pack in his inner suit pocket and took one out. "Do you smoke?"Arnold shook his head.Larry shrugged and put the packet of cigarettes back into his inner coat pocket. Then he lit the cigarette he'd collected with his lighter and began to puff on the cigarette."Go ahead," Larry said when Arnold seemed to pause to watch him. "I'm listening."Mr Larry watched Arnold speak. He watched him try to articulate his words very well. He puffed out smoke from his cigar repeatedly. Sometimes, he did it so close to Arnold’s face that he could see the visible disgust on the man's face. It gave him some sort of sick pleasure.“Hold on.”Arnold looked up at Larry, wondering why he suddenly told him to hold on.“Yes?” Arnold asked, now looking at Larry intently, his eyes examining the man’s face. From his examination, he made a finding: Mr Larry's lips didn’t resemble that of a smoker. It was surprisingly clean and fresh-looking.“Why?”Arnold was beginning to wonder. He shook his head to stop his distracting train of thought. “Why what?”“Why the fuck should I invest in your business? Let’s say, okay, I’m interested in this business idea you’re pitching to me, why do you think I should invest in it?” Larry laughed — a dark, long laugh. He reached out and put out his cigarette on the ashtray beside him. “From what you’ve said so far, it
‘Arnold.’Someone was calling him.‘Arnold.’That voice again. He shook his head and he could swear that the feeling was gone almost instantly. It was fast and surprising.'Arnold.'That voice yet again. That voice in his head was speaking to him. He snapped out of his reverie and left the old man’s gaze finally. The feeling was gone and the locked gaze was broken.“Yes?” he replied the voice.Somehow, now that he had gone through this number of humiliating experiences, he didn’t exactly care if he looked crazy. Heck, he might as well be crazy taking orders from that invisible being that had somehow taken up room in his body, in his mind and was controlling him with a voice and the promise of money.‘Your quest has been completed and I can literally hear your thoughts, Arnold.'“Well, good for you," Arnold whispered in reply. "Just tell me the score so we can as well get over with this first quest.”At this point, he was shameless. What was at stake was suddenly greater than saving fac
There was a cafe on the hotel's ground floor, just a few meters away from the hotel lobby. It was serene yet there was a slight bustle to it — similar to ruffling feathers. For its wonderful qualities, it was very expensive. It had some of the most expensive coffee Arnold had ever seen not to even consider drinking. But, here he was, sipping a latte like it the most mundane thing ever. He took his time to savour the taste. It was nothing extraordinary, just overpriced. It was quite disappointing but he could guess that the price was more for the ambience than it was for the coffee. This morning as the sun streamed in through the windows, he tried to soak in everything and just be in the moment for once. He was wearing a casual get-up, trying to match the atmosphere: a pristine checkered shirt rolled up to show his strong hand and a black trouser.Even as he tried to look and feel zen, his head was running round and round in circles as he tried to calculate how much he’d spent and ho
"Hello?" Mr Xiu waved his hand across Arnold's face.He continued when Arnold didn't reply. "Are you alright, young man? You suddenly went off and it looked like you were talking to yourself for a moment there."Arnold cleared his throat and muttered something inaudible about using a tiny ear bud to make a phone call."Oh, forget it," Xiu said lightheartedly. He linked his fingers on the table and asked. "So, what do you say?"Arnold's eyebrows scrunched up. He was just getting over the sudden, new quest and he was wondering what Mr Xiu was getting at. "So what?""What do you say about the offer?"Arnold's eyebrows raised up. "What offer?" Had Mr Xiu been talking to him while the voice was also speaking to him?Xiu laughed. "You don't think I was just trying to make small talk when I told you about investing a few minutes ago, did you?"Arnold was genuinely surprised. He stuttered. "I — Ii—""So, what do you say to—"Arnold found his voice quickly and replied, a little too fast. "I ac
Arnold was shocked. It flowed through his entire being and flooded his face. He could feel the heat and he was sure his cheeks and nose were already flaming-red. Confusion mixed in with the shock. His brows knitted. What was Mr Xiu talking about? It was so sudden that he almost laughed. He wanted to laugh. But he held it in by a thin thread. He stared at the coins in his hand, trying to weigh what it was: the currency and amount."What?" He didn't know when the words left his lips. His mouth worked on its own sometimes. He held one of the coins closer to his face. Maybe he needed to use prescription glasses because it was hard to identify the coins. As he took a closer look at them, he discovered why it was hard for him to identify them. They were an outdated currency. They were American coins, but they were no longer in use.He scoffed."What?" he repeated. He looked up at Xiu who looked very un-bothered. Like this was a very normal transaction. Like his demands were totally easy a
Arnold was back in his heavenly hotel room. After the conversation with Xiu, he found that he could no longer sit at the cafe. He couldn't even finish his coffee. It had become very cold. He ordered five club sandwiches and another cup of coffee, which he took to his room. He stuffed his face full with the sandwiches, and when he was done with his meal, he took off his clothes. The hotel room had lost the brand new feeling he'd gotten the first night he'd spent in it and he was too busy thinking so he couldn't sleep. Instead, he laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The clock was ticking. Time waited for no one, after all. A few hours later, he still hadn’t gotten over his encounter with Mr Xiu. He was spread out on the bed, thinking hard about, poring through every bit of their conversation. He held up one of the coins between his thumb and index finger. The other coin was on the dresser. He brought the coin in his hand close to his face. The light bounced off the metal."What
Arnold felt better than ever. He'd not still found a way to somehow magically transform the coins the Ghost of Wall Street, Mr Xiu, had given him into money, but he was trying and that was what mattered to him. The fact that he was trying made all the difference. And, he wouldn't stop trying. Not now. Not ever. It was this resilience that would take him further. He'd hit a huge milestone that was more than worthy of celebration. He'd not yet completed the chain quests, but he'd finally found an apartment that he liked and he could finally settle down there. It was far better than he could have ever dreamt of and he was so proud of himself, he could cry from all the emotions passing through him. When the agent had taken him to see the apartment, he had actually almost cried from awe and relief. Finally. After days of searching, he'd found an apartment he could call 'The One'. He was moving right up the ladder and it was the best feeling anyone could ever ask for, especially him, co
Lisa walked into the store, subconsciously swaying her hips a bit more than she would normally do. She felt the man's eyes on her and a silly part of her intended to give him a good view.Good God, she thought as she headed to the aisle that had fresh vegetables, he was one hot hunk. She wondered how she'd managed to stop her squeak after she'd bumped into him and looked up to find that he was the one. She'd watched him from her balcony on the days she was bored and lounging there, sipping red wine. Now that she had finally seen him up close, he was even hotter. Who knew that a simple grocery run would bring her towards his direction? She picked a few carrots, staring at the sizes a little too long. Her thoughts doubled back to him. He looked like a caring man. Not just an outwardly hot man, no. He looked like someone strong that she could depend on. Someone she could share all her worries with. She had to talk to him again. She just had to. She couldn't waste this opportunity whe
