The First Quest

Arnold woke up to the heady scent of luxury. For the first time in his entire life, he had slept without any form of discomfort. All he could feel was the fluffy beddings and the pillows that felt like tufts of cloud.

After the incident with the hotel staff, they had apologized to him profusely and provided everything he needed immediately. Fueled by the doors his money opened for him and the endless privileges, he had entered cloud nine from yesterday until today.

He opened his eyes and all he could see was white. If he didn't know any better, he would have simply assumed that he must be in heaven.

He stood abruptly, letting the soft, white duvet slide off his bare skin and walked into the adjourning bathroom in his birthday suit. After showering, he laid out the brand new designer clothes he'd ordered on the bed, sniffing it like a savage before proceeding to put it on — with the tags still intact, of course.

As he put on the gray suit trouser, he heard a light buzz coming from his door. Someone was at the door. He proceeded to open it, remembering that he'd called the hotel for his breakfast, ordering the best breakfast buffet. Those were his exact words. When he opened the door, a maid came in with a big tray of food.

"Here's your breakfast, sir."

Sir. It felt good to be called that.

She lingered at the door, swallowing at the sight of his bare chest. He blushed a little.

"Thank you. You can leave it there." He pointed some random place for her, still unsure of how to act with his newfound wealth.

She left the food at the side of his bed and went out immediately like she was running from something.

Alone once more, he continued putting on his clothes.

When he was done, he went over to the dresser with a full length mirror — nothing like he'd ever seen before. Standing in front of the mirror, he gave himself a once over, nodding at the regal - looking man in front of him. The man in the mirror exuded class and money, more befitting of his new status and the fat amount of money in his account.

"Good," he whispered to himself.

His stomach rumbled loudly.

He bowed his head a little from embarrassment even though there was no one around. Then, getting his act together, he moved towards the lavish food platter at the corner of his bed. He sat on his bed and opened the platter.

As he opened it, he was slightly overwhelmed at the sight of so much yummy food at once. He dived right into the meal, munching on everything down to the turkey bones.

While eating fast, he made sure he didn't mess up his new clothes. He had to walk out of this room looking his very best to make a point and show those who'd laughed at him the night before that he was a motherfucking trillionaire! And, trillionaires didn't look like mad men. Never again, he thought.

What happened the day before would not repeat itself going forward.

As he bit into a large chicken lap, something buzzed in his head.

Was it the door?

‘Arnold.’

No, it wasn't the door. It was the voice in his head — that voice from yesterday. It was still there.

‘Of course, I'm still here.’

He froze mid-bite as a screen suddenly appeared in his line of vision with words scrawled on it.

(Host - Arnold Stone)

(Nexus Point Balance – Unlocked- 4,999,999,984,500 dollars)

(Body - 55 -Average)

(Mind - 11 - Fragile. Can easily be manipulated.)

(Lavish Point – 100,000 points)

He had spent a total of $2,000 apart from the $13,000 he'd used to book this hotel room.

Nexus told him loud and clear.

‘That's your present balance, Arnold.’

He was still not used to the voice in his head, so each time it spoke, it threw him off balance.

When the voice spoke again, there seemed to be a hint of humor in it.

‘Don't be scared.’

In a more serious tone, the voice continued: Your stay in the hotel is limited. There's a flaw in the system that won't allow you spend past a certain limit on yourself. So, you'll not spend much time here because it'll only make you spend more and more on your personal needs. You'll have to move on and find a way to settle down quickly.

‘Never forget this, Arnold. If you want to enjoy yourself to stupor, you have to work hard to earn it. In order to move higher, you'll have to work hard for it.’

There was silence as Arnold still tried to process everything he was hearing.

Then, in a loud voice, the voice asked: ‘Do you understand?’

Arnold jolted upright and nodded, hoping the Nexus could sense it.

Alright.

‘Hmmm. You seem to have accepted the reality of the system pretty well. Therefore, it's time for the system to help you rise to the top and avenge those that betrayed you like you were a mere piece of trash.’

Arnold's eyes widened.

"Really? I—" Arnold began.

‘Silence for now. Eat up. You'll need the strength.’

Arnold gulped down the rest of food as fast as he could, obeying the voice. When he was done, the system continued speaking to him.

‘Now, prepare yourself. You'll be going for your first quest soon.’

"What quest?" Arnold asked, suddenly feeling eager and curious at the same time.

Silence. The system didn't reply.

"Hello? Are you still there?"

Nothing.

He got up and went into the bathroom to wash his hands. He looked up at the mirror in the bathroom, staring at the sharp lines on his jaw, at his rather strong - looking chin.

‘Arnold, are you ready?’

He shook his head. Then nodded. Then stilled. The system was back, but his mind wasn't yet stable.

‘Are you ready for your next quest?’

Arnold sighed and looked straight at his reflection in the mirror. He squared his shoulders and replied, "I'm ready."

There was a knock on the hotel room's door immediately the words left his lips.

Arnold's breath hitched as he looked towards the door. The knocking intensified. His pulse began to race.

Who could that be? Was this his first quest? What the heck was happening?
