Liam rushed through the hospital hallways. After spending the last month visiting his sister here, he didn’t even have to pause to run in the right direction.
“Nurse Mo!” He yelled as the attending nurse to his sister walked out of the ward.
Nurse Mo turned to look at him, her eyes filled with pity.
“Liam, she had another serious attack just an hour ago; this time, it was even harder.”
Liam shook his head, refusing to accept that things were getting worse daily for his sister and only family member.
“Can I see her now?” He finally asked.
Usually, he always tried his best to be there for his sister whenever she was feeling worse because of her failing organ. However, the bills were increasing daily, and he had to spend more time working.
It was impossible to stay by her bedside all day.
Seeing the genuine concern on his face, Nurse Mo couldn’t help but feel even more pity for the pair of siblings and sighed softly.
“She’s still being monitored in the intensive care. In the meantime, the doctor asked you to see him.”
Liam thanked her hurriedly and rushed to the doctor’s office.
It had only been one month but he already knew every part of the hospital. As soon as he stopped in front of the attending doctor’s office, his secretary let him in immediately while gazing at him with pity.
Liam was one of the smartest students in his faculty and was usually observant. After analysing Nurse Mo’s reaction and the secretary’s look, he could already tell that something was wrong.
But there was no other option; he could only go in to see the doctor.
“I won’t waste words with you, Liam; another attack would take your sister’s life.”
Liam felt like the world around him was crumbling.
His face seemed to have aged by some years as he leaned forward to hold the doctor’s hand.
“Has the test been done again? Am I really not a match for her?”
His sister, Rose, had an issue with her cells and her organs were always attacked every now and then with one issue or the other.
To stop her from going through all that pain, the only solution was a stem cell transplant that would give her new, healthy cells.
However, he was not a match, and the cost of getting a paid match was too high. So he told them to do the test again.
They were siblings. They should be a match, right?
The doctor’s solemn look was the only response he needed.
They were not a match.
“Your blood type is one of the rare ones, and very few people have it in the country. It would be hard to have that blood type and be a match for Rose,” the doctor added.
Liam nodded in understanding.
“Is there an available donor?” Although he didn’t have all the money, all he could do was raise it as quickly as possible.
If his sister had another attack…
“All the nurses like your sister have been doing their best and asking other hospitals. We found a match this morning.”
Until Liam arrived in front of his college house, he was in a daze from thinking about all the money that he had to fork out just to get his sister the surgery.
However, he had no choice. He had to beg Lily to give him her share of their savings so he could get a down payment for the surgery first.
Lily was having a girl’s night with her friends and laughing happily at some drama when Liam pushed the door open.
Her smile faltered as she took in Liam’s tired and tattered appearance. After working long hours and barely catching any sleep. Liam had dark circles, and his hair was all over.
His usual charming and handsome appearance was hard to see, and this embarrassed Lily.
“Hehe, didn’t you say he won’t be home tonight?” One of her friends asked Lily as she looked at Liam with a mocking smile.
To all of them, Liam was their friend’s boyfriend, and he could be pushed around because of his low background.
He also adored Lily and would bend over his back to satisfy her. With that impression in mind, none of them ever treated him with any respect in the two years of their dating.
Lily was also annoyed at Liam’s sudden appearance. She had been enjoying having their house to herself in the last week of him running around.
Today, when she decided to have friends over, he suddenly came back.
What type of bad luck was that?
“Liam darling, would you go next door and stay with James? I haven’t spent time with Alice and Mia in a long time,” Lily whined while sashaying towards him.
Even though they owned the house together and Liam paid most of the rent, she didn’t sound like she was asking for a favour but rather like she was giving him instructions.
Liam shook his head, already used to how she used to act.
“I’m not staying for long; I just came to pick something up,” he replied, and Lily’s smile brightened.
“In that case, hurry up and leave so we can have the place to ourselves.”
Without bothering to say more, Lily turned back, prepared to continue the movie they were watching.
“Lily, there’s an important matter on the ground. Can we talk inside the room?” Liam asked while glancing at her friends, who were staring at them.
Since they started dating two years ago, he and Lily had started a joint savings account that they planned to use when they were done with college.
Lily was the one who kept the bank card, and he wanted to borrow the money for Rose's surgery.
With how good he was at earning money, he knew that paying Lily’s share would not be a problem as soon as his sister was healthy.
Sensing that something was wrong, Lily looked at her friends and then nodded.
As soon as they were inside, Lily asked him, “What’s the matter?”
“Lily, they have found a donor for Rose’s stem cell, but I don’t have enough to cover the down payment.”
Lily’s face changed as soon as he mentioned money.
“Isn’t that something very expensive?” She wasn’t very smart, but she had a vague idea that things like that usually cost a lot of money.
Liam nodded, not noticing the change in her expression.
“It is, but getting a donor is even harder, for Rose to find one, it’s already very lucky…”
“What are you saying, Liam?” Lily yelled, her eyes sharp and cautious.
For Liam to call her, she could already guess what he wanted to ask; after all, he shared everything with her.
Liam’s excitement dies when he sees that something is wrong with Lily’s expression.
Thinking his rambling had confused her, he scratched his hair in embarrassment.
“Lily, the important thing is that, I’ll need to loan from our savings.”
Lily’s eyes narrowed with disgust as she looked at Liam’s tattered appearance. In the first place, she never believed that they would spend the money together; after all, the money was in her account. But now he wanted to take some from it.“I already locked the money up. We can’t access it,” she lied while crossing her arms across her chest.Liam’s chest tightened as he heard her words.“What do you mean, Lily?” Last he remembered, it was an open account.Lily even took some from it last month to get a designer bag that she loved so much. When did it get locked?“Lily, this is very urgent, as soon as Rose is feeling better, I’ll pay the money back.”Lily sneered as she looked at his pitiful appearance.“It’s normal for sick people to die. If you don’t have the means to save her, the most you can do is accompany her in her last moments.”On hearing her words, Liam’s heart chilled, and he stared at her with shock.“Can you hear yourself?” He asked after some seconds. Lily rolled her ey
The rest of everything that Lily said was a blur, and Liam ended the call without knowing what to say.He had met Lily in his first year, and he immediately liked her sunny and bright personality. She was not that good at studying and would come to him for help every now and then. Gradually, the both of them became close and became a couple. To save money, she had suggested moving in and Liam had agreed since he was staying alone. In these two years, he had considered her his woman and also family. After all, he didn’t have anyone besides Rose. However, he had also noticed that Lily had been changing these past few months, but he had been too busy to point anything out. This time, he could see that they had come to the end of their rope. But it took him a costly amount to see the gaps and changes.Just then, the accountant opened the door, pushing him out of his thoughts.“Liam, I just called the donor's family. They said the half payment must be complete before they agree to sign the
Even though his heart ached to sell it, Liam knew it was the smartest decision. He was not a person who liked to collect expensive items in the first place and didn’t have any idea about pawning things off.Using his phone, he was able to find a pawn shop with very good reviews and took the bus to the nearest bus stop.“Welcome,” the boss at the pawnshop greeted as Liam entered. His eyes were sharp and piercing, and Liam felt a little uncomfortable under his gaze. However, he still greeted him back politely before taking out the watch.“I’d like to sell this,” he started and placed the watch on the counter. The man’s eyes lit up and he hurriedly grabbed the watch that Liam had just placed on the counter.Seeing the shining gold, the man was impressed.“I didn’t know that this brand would still be moving around. It’s been a while since they created designs that would go into the public,” the man said and then started a long-winded conversation about how the brand was really impressive.
The next day, Liam only woke up when he felt his head being tugged on. As he opened his eyes to his sister’s familiar eyes, he couldn’t help the joy that rushed through him.“Rose,” he groaned out, his voice still husky from just waking up.“Brother.”Rose's eyes teared up as she looked at how tired her brother looked. Although he looked a little better after a night's rest, it was still not enough to hide all the stress that he had been through in the last few days. Her heart ached for her brother terribly.“Rose, how do you feel? The doctor said the attack was a mild one?” Liam asked.Without waiting for her reply, Liam rushed to check around her, as though, by doing that, he would be able to tell if she was fine.Rose smiled gently as she saw his worried expression.“I know my body best. I’m fine right now.” She was in a little bit of pain but she didn’t dare to tell him as she didn’t want him to worry.Liam finally calmed down and sat down beside her while holding her hands. For t
Without waiting for his reply, Lily ended the call and Liam looked around the empty apartment one more time as the call ended. At first, he wanted to believe that something was wrong with Lily, but after hearing her last words, a part of him couldn’t help but believe her. There was just that feeling in his heart. The realization.Without knowing, he had already settled in one corner of the floor and his mind started to wander to the memories they had both shared. In their relationship, he had indeed been the one giving and Lily just taking.Liam stood up, his eyes flashing with anger.“Already even?” He scoffed as he looked around his empty house. She had taken all that belonged to him and his prize money and she felt they were even? Before he could think of the next point of action, his phone rang, disrupting his thought process.“Liam, where are you?” Daniel’s voice rang out anxiously from the other end of the call.Liam frowned slightly. Daniel was his coursemate and closest friend
“Not on my watch!”Her voice was clear and sweet, but with the high-pitched tone she used, it made everyone pause.Jake’s eyes widened as he looked at the familiar figure. “Naya!”Naya glanced at him, and her lips curled up with disgust. “Who are you?”If it was any other person, Jake and his minions would have flared up. However, even though the Willow family had some money, they couldn’t compare to the Ornery family in any way.In front of her, Jake didn’t dare to speak. He even lowered his head slightly.Seeing that he knew his place, Naya nodded slightly. On the other hand, Lily thought that Naya had charmed Jake with her looks and flared up.“Who’s this vixen? Why can’t you greet Jake? Do you dare to offend the Willow family?”Everyone looked at her but nodded in agreement. After all, they didn’t know who Naya was. However, Jake seemed to have called her name, so no one was bold enough to scold her like Lily had just done.Naya’s eyes narrowed as she turned to look at Lily.“And
Before he could reply, she placed her index finger on her lips.“What’s your department?”“Computer science,” Liam replied helplessly. Either way, he was really minoring in some courses. However, it was not his major; if she went there later, she wouldn’t find him.Naya’s eyes flashed, but she still told the driver.“Drive to the computer science department.”She turned to Liam and said, "Put your number here. I’ll call you when next I want to see you.”Liam’s face stiffened as he heard her words. So he had just made her drive him to a department that was on the other side only to give out his number? He felt that there was many troubles that he was facing now, he had no intention of giving her but when he met with her eyes, Liam couldn’t help his heart from thumping.“I have saved you; the least is to collect my number. Besides, do you think I’m not worthy of being your woman?”Liam shook his head hurriedly as he was afraid that she would misunderstand.“If you don’t think so, put yo
The four men had straight faces and nodded at his reply.“Young master, we have finally found you!”Liam stepped back as he looked at them guardedly. They have found him?Thinking they were people with bad intentions, he slowly took steps out of the hallway. When the men saw his actions, their lips twitched in amusement. This young master was really cautious hehe…“Young Master Liam, we have spent the last twenty years searching for you, now that we have found you, it’s impossible for this to be a mistake.”“We have also saved your adopted sister and she will get the switch done as soon as possible,” one of them said.Liam paused in his steps.Adopted sister? Also, were they the ones that paid for Rose’s treatment?“You are the ones that covered the treatment for my sister?”“Yes, young master. Since she’s someone you care about, it’s not a big deal to help her!”Liam pinched himself secretly as he felt like he was daydreaming. In this short while, they had called him a young master a
