CHAPTER TEN The conference room was noisy as the attendants were busy communicating among themselves. Some were busy discussing about their plans for a better future, while others were lamenting about their past losses. The meeting room was filled to the brim as the people there all had their eyes out for just one thing. Bagging a contract with the Echelon industries. Echelon industries was one of the biggest group of companies in the country and any contract with them would surely be a blast. Different elite families were present, Maria Steele was also present and along with her came Kate. Maria had always been someone to show off so on a special occasion like today, (Kate had told her of her relationship with Chris, so she was sure they would be able to bag a contract easily) she dressed as if she was going for a fashion show. They were still indulging in their discussions when Chris came into the room and the whole place went silent in a minute. He was putting on a navy blu
“Now, where we’re we?” Owen asked and smiled. Maria’s heart began to beat faster at the sinister smile Owen had on. “Ladies and gentlemen, I have gone through all the proposals and just like my colleague had said earlier, they were all good but I couldn’t take all so I have chosen the two best among them.” He paused a little and stared at the crowd before commencing.“After much deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that the two most worthy contracts are the ones from the Steeles and Mrs Tamara here” He paused for a while as the whole crowd grumbled about his decision. Many felt he had selected them because they were his relatives. Because it was no coincidence that he had chosen his former family’s business and his wife’s family business. Maria was happy beyond comprehension. The joy she felt in her heart at that moment was the most she had felt in her entire lifetime. She had always known that Owen was a fool but she didn’t know that it was up to this extent. But
“Is that so?” Owen asked and the attorney nodded in response “Yes, my don. We’ve signed our part. Now all that is left is for you to sign yours” Maria said with a fake smile and Owen quirked his brows. The attorney handed him a pen and he stared at each of them for some time before asking “have you gone through the whole deal?” He asked Maria.without a second thought “oh, yes we have” she answered and Kate stared at her questioningly but Maria ignored her stares. Owen signed on the paper and with the help of his attorney, the stamp was placed on the signatures and the deal was sealed. When they were through with the signing and stamping process, Maria suggested that they had a drink to celebrate the future of their companies. Owen used the intercom to request for a bottle of Chardonnay and in no time, the wine was delivered to the room. They had just popped the bottle of wine open when Maria received a call but she ignored it. Owen poured a considerable amount of wine into the
CHAPTER THIRTEEN Chris paced up and down in his office, his emotions were all over the place as he thought of the incident that had happened earlier. He knew he would surely be punished for it but above all, he wished he wouldn’t end uo losing his job. That blood sucking whore Kate he cursed under his breath. For some Time now, he had been asking her out and she choose today of all days to accept him. “C**t” he cursed under his breath. He was still in his thought when a knock came on his door “who is that motherf***er” he cursed out loud and the voice he heard next sacred the living shit out of him “it’s me Owen” he heard the voice from the other side and immediately, he rushed to the door. He heaved a sigh before turning the door knob. “Forgive my inappropriate words Mr Owen” he said admidst a bow and thrust out his hand for a handshake. Owen accepted his hands and they both shared eye contact for a while before Chris lowered his gaze “Won’t you invite me in? Or is
CHAPTER FOURTEEN It’s been three days since Owen bought all their stocks and Maria had to admit, it brought a whole new level of change to their business. The shareholders were beyond happy with the latest developments. The company’s publicity increased after the announcement that the contract had been signed. Maria had invited the whole of the steeles family to a meeting that was actually meant for celebrating their latest deal. They had invited many others as well, it wasn’t a formal meeting but no one would like to miss such an important event, therefore the hall was filled to the brim.******************* Maria ran her eyes through the crowd as she tried to decipher Kate’s whereabouts but she couldn’t find her. She sighed in exasperation, ‘Kate would be the death of her’ she thought and hissed under her breath. Ever since their trip to Echelon, she had not been too well. She seemed detached and angry at herself for a reason best known to her. She was about t
CHAPTER FIFTEEN They were still in the middle of the party and Maria had just finished giving her speech which has touched the whole crowd. She had explained how her family had gone through hell before they were finally able to eat three square meals a day. The crowd listened attentively as she narrated her life story and many were touched by her past but became happy when she informed them of the latest developments. Few were sincerely happy for them while others were faking their smiles. A toast was raised in honor of the Steele family and Maria had just come down from the podium when she saw the two women that Kate had been talking to before she arrived earlier. One of the women looked a little bit old, maybe in her early seventies or late sixties while the other looked younger. Maybe in her early fourties or so She walked up to them in her ground flowing gown and when she was close enough, she greeted. The women were unaware of her presence and her greeting was what i
CHAPTER SIXTEEN Owen had just gotten home and he was kinda tired. He had to admit tho, he missed all this. The early morning coffee, the stamping and signings and the occasional roundups of the top deals. He opened the door with his fingerprint and as soon as he walked into the building, he sighed. The whole place was quiet and kinda empty. He massaged his left shoulder with his right hand and did the same with the other but he felt no relief. He was fuc*ing tired. He had just slumped into the couch when he heard the doorbell ring. He was kinda suprised because it was late already. He stared at the clock on the wall and the time was five minutes past eleven. Heck, he didn’t know that it was this late, he had been so busy that he lost track of time. The doorbell rang again and this time, he furrowed his brows. He stood up from the couch carefully and tiptoed to the door. He peeped from the peephole and he saw that it was none other than Mia. He stared for a while, trying to asce
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN Tamara had been concerned about the partnership with Echelon. Ever since the day she signed the contract, she had been on tenter hooks. She felt he was trying to play some sick game but she couldn’t counter his attacks when she didn’t even know what the game was. She felt disturbed with the fact that Owen had chosen his two enemies out of all the eligible candidates. She knew that Owen still had her in mind so it came as a surprise to her when he choosed her company for the partnership. She had thought that he would refuse her contract immediately but he ended up accepting it. She was well aware that their companies were not the ones with the best deals but he had accepted theirs anyways. She was also surprised with the fact that he was the CEO of Echelon. She remembered clearly when she had collected the company from Owen after his father, her husband’s death. He had been devastated, depressed even. It felt as though his whole life had been collected
