Chapter 2

Ethan made his way to the nearest police he could find by the road and tried to report Philip. But once the Police heard what Ethan had to say, he hissed in annoyance.

"Go back to your house if you don't want to be arrested. You're being a nuisance." The policeman said in a voice tinged with annoyance.

Ethan had approached the policeman still in his cleaning jumpsuit which was dirty. From the moment the policeman heard the name of Philip Carnegie from Ethan's mouth, he didn't even try to hear Ethan out. He already considered as a pauper who was trying to fight against the rich.

Ethan was dumbfounded at the coldness of the police man. He looked at his dirty clothes but he couldn't get rid of it since his proper clothes was still in Philip's house and he had been kicked out of the house.

Ethan went back to his house with dejection. He entered the house that he had been living in for almost a year now. It wasn't his house, when he wanted to marry Sophia, he told her to wait since he couldn't yet afford a house for both of them but Sophia had somehow rented an apartment for the both of them.

Ethan was angrily thinking about what to do to make Philip pay for taking his wife, he imagined all sorts of different scenarios. But before he carried out anyone of them, he decided to call Sophia.

He rang Sophia's phone a few times and she didn't pick up his call.

'Did he seize her phone?' Ethan thought, blaming it on Philip again.

"Damn all these rich bastards." He cursed under his breath.

He paced about in frustration as he thought about what to do when his phone rang. He quickly accepted the call and held the phone to his ear.

"Big brother Ethan, when will you bring my birthday gift? Have you forgotten my birthday?" A young and thin voice asked the moment Ethan received the call.

Ethan's anger cooled down immediately, the voice of the little girl had the effect of being able to calm him down and she was one of the most cherished people he had.

"I'm sorry Sylvie" Ethan said. " Your big brother has been very busy. I will bring your gift right away." He promised.

"Okay! Don't forget to get something for Mark too." The little girl chimed in an happy tone as Ethan hung up the call.

Ethan didn't have any family members. Ever since he knew himself, he had been raised in an orphanage and that was the only family he had. Ever since he graduated from college and began to work, he always made it his habit to check up on the orphanage even though it wasn't his responsibility.

Sylvie and Mark were two of the orphanage children who were very close to him and he regarded them as his siblings even though they weren't related by blood. He loved them very much.

Ethan quickly changed his clothes and went to the orphanage while spending the little change he had left on him to buy them gifts. He played with them at the orphanage till late in the evening before he headed back home.

Sophia didn't come home that night. Ethan tried calling her over and over again and still got no response. Ethan was about to go to the Police again to report the matter when Sophia sent him a text message saying that she had gone to see her parents, that he shouldn't expect her at home.

Ethan was exasperated as he didn't know what to do. Sophia had never introduced him to her family and she always kept it mysterious. Anytime Ethan asked her about her family, she would tell him to not worry about it, that he didn't need to know. Ethan was a little worried about it but he kept his concerns because he was happy as long as he loved his wife and she loved him back.

The next day, Ethan quickly freshened up and left the house to go to the company to resume his work. He was not with his car as it had developed a fault the previous day and was still at the front of Philip's house.

'I have to get it fixed asap, I'll use the money I get from this week's work to repair it.' Ethan thought to himself as he had to walk over to the company. He ended up being late.

He arrived at the company that gave him jobs to sustain himself. The money he usually received from jobs wasn't much so he usually requested to do big jobs alone even though it usually wore his body down. But even then, the money he received was still meager.

Anytime Ethan asked for a raise, the manager would tell him that he was inexperienced in the work and so he couldn't receive the full payment because he wasn't a professional. Ethan always had no choice but to just receive the money he received.

He made his way into the company and knocked on the door of his manager.

"Come in." A languid female voice responded to his knock and Ethan pushed the door open.

"Good morning, Mrs Phoebe." Ethan greeted with a slight bow of his head.

"What happened yesterday? You didn't report at the office." Mrs Phoebe asked as she nibbled on a cookie. She had a plump stature.

"I'm sorry ma'am, something unexpected happened." Ethan said.

"Did you finish the job?" Mrs Phoebe asked with dull eyes.

"No ma'am, I witnessed a crime and when I tried to intervene, I was kicked out." Ethan said as he recalled the previous day's events.

"Crime?" Mrs Phoebe echoed. "Wasn't it just because you saw your wife with another man? What is the crime in that?" She asked curiously and with a hint of disdain on her face.

Ethan was taken aback. He didn't expect that she would know everything but it seemed that she had been informed about what happened at Philip's house.

"I couldn't stand by and watch ma'am." Ethan said without remorse.

Which man wouldn't react after seeing such a spectacle?

"That's all on you." Mrs Phoebe said. Ethan looked up at her in bewilderment.

"You're fired!" She announced dismissively.
