Chapter 3

"What?!" Ethan blinked in confusion. It was as though he didn't hear correctly.

"You're not deaf are you?" Mrs Phoebe asked, a tinge of irritation coating her voice. "Get out of my office. I do not want to see your face here again." She said.

Ethan was dumbfounded. "Why are you doing this?" He asked with a shaky tone.

"I don't have a choice, alright? Don't take it too personal. You should have focused on your job and not disturb the client who was enjoying himself in his own house." Mrs Phoebe said. It seems like someone was behind this.

"Did Philip put you up to this?" Ethan asked, his anger began to simmer again.

"Keep your voice down." Mrs Phoebe said as she glanced about as though she didn't want anyone else to hear their conversation.

"Don't cause trouble for me. I just tf you that you're fired so get out of my office before I call the guards to carry you out." She said.

Ethan had no choice but to turn around in defeat. His mind was already a chaotic mess by now. He turned his head back for one last moment.

"Won't I at least get my salary for the week?" He asked with a slightly expectant tone."

"No." Mrs Phoebe replied sharply without sparing him a glance.

She had actually been called by someone from Philip's house with a report about what Ethan did and an order to fire him. She had nothing to lose so she did as she was told.

Ethan became dejected and felt like a price of trash. He walked out of the company in shame and made his way back home, Only for him to see some posters pasted on the house.

The posters said "This house has been sold. Keep off the property."

Ethan doubted his eyes. He checked the house again to confirm if it was his and it really was. He hissed in annoyance as he tore the poster on the front door and tried to enter the house by putting in his key. But the keyhole didn't turn to his key as the lock had been changed.

"What's going on here?" Ethan muttered in confusion and slight panic.

As he struggled with the door, a policeman approached him and jerked Ethan away from the door.

"What do you think you're doing?"  The man said as he glared at Ethan.

"I'm trying to enter my house!" Ethan snapped at the policeman.

The policeman scanned him from top to bottom. Then he had a look of realisation on his face.

"Ah! So you are the guy she spoke about?" He muttered with a snicker on his lips.

"She? Who? Did you see Sophia?" Ethan asked in confusion.

"You mean Sophia Walton?" The policeman asked as he threw a curious glance at Ethan.

"What Walton? She's Sophia Astor, my wife. I married her." Ethan refuted.

The policeman laughed in mockery at Ethan's obliviousness.

"It's either you are very stupid or you were deceived by an expert. Do you even what family she belongs to?"

"I don't know..." Ethan replied.

"Man, I feel sorry for you but there's nothing I can do for you. You definitely know the Walton family in this city, right?" He asked Ethan.

Ethan nodded his head and the police followed up with an answer.

"The Sophia you've been 'married' to is to the eldest daughter of that family. She's way out of your league. It makes me wonder why she married you in the first place." The policeman said with a pondering expression on his face.

"You're handsome for sure. That's the only thing I can say. She probably used you as a form of distraction for her otherwise boring life. She probably wanted to experience what it was like to get married to a pauper and used you for her experiment..."

The policeman seemed to be talkative as he blabbered in and on while Ethan watched.

"What are you saying?!" Ethan lost his cool as he heard everything the policeman was mumbling to himself.

The policeman looked at Ethan and scoffed.

"You still don't get it... I'm saying that your marriage has been a lie and was only a game of amusement for your 'wife' Sophia and her family were in cahoots with her." He explained.

Ethan felt like his head was spinning. He couldn't accept what he had just heard and he just stared at the policeman with a doubtful face while still being scared that it was the truth.

"I don't believe you." Ethan denied it.

"You don't? Why don't you take a look at this?" The policeman said as he shoved some documents to Ethan's hand.

The documents were the receipts of the house being sold, a short note that read "Game over, you've gotten boring." and a document of divorce.

Ethan slumped to the ground as he couldn't believe what he was seeing. The policeman had been saying the truth.

The policeman looked at Ethan with amusement in his face and pointed to a corner of the house.

"Oh, and there's your luggage too." He said to Ethan who turned his head to look and then he saw just a small bag that was supposed to be all his personal property.

Ethan felt like a thousand needles were gripping his heart as he sat on the floor without saying a word. The policeman had been right. He recognised the writing on the note that it belonged to Sophia and there was no way the documents could be fake as they had been given to him by a policeman.

The only property that he supposedly had was also thrown out of the house and the lock of the house had been changed.

The proof was all there and still Ethan had a very hard time believing it. Images of the past one year that he had spent with his 'loving wife' flashed through his mind.

All of that were lies? His marriage was a game?

Tears ran down Ethan's cheeks. He had never felt so betrayed and sad his entire life. At that moment all the affection and love that he had for Sophia melted away like it was a lie and he struggled back to his feet. He gave the policeman the documents and picked up his bag that had been thrown outside.

And without cleaning the tears that stained his cheeks, he walked out to the streets and kept walking.
