"What the" Maya blurted out when she felt the temperature around them dropping. "How? It's not even been an hour yet!"
Callum chuckled at her expression which looked like she had eaten something sour. He swore a smirk on his face as he shrugged.
"It's not that difficult. I'm sure Master Gurung wouldn't have asked me to do something he didn't think I'd be capable of."
It was a loaded statement. After all, Callum was certain it was something that should be beyond the level of someone who didn't have the answers. He only said it like that to see what reaction the old man would have.
However, Master Gurung didn't even bother opening his eyes as he nodded. Damn. Either Grandpa told him what our legacy is capable of or he already had his suspicions. If it's the first then it's not a big deal. But if it's the second...
Callum chewed on the implications of that question for a moment. Then he's testing the limits of The Magician by using me as a test subject.
He could only trust his Grandpa's judgement for now and hope he hadn't made a mistake. Hmm, come to think of it. Fire is linked to my Power stat. Should I try increasing it?
A quick glance at his stats told him he'd already filled the single point of fire mana his body could hold. After consulting the Archives, he decided to go ahead and break through his limit.
Luckily this should be the easiest to increase. He took a deep breath in anticipation. First, familiarise myself with the full amount of fire mana in my body.
It took him a few minutes to grasp the exact amount of the fire element flowing through him. Next, seize the same amount of mana from my chosen source. This step took a bit of effort to sense and then isolate the element from the others.
As the air around them became colder, Maya sensed the temperature between Callum's hands rising. Don't tell me! She gulped.
Callum's expression scrunched up as he proceeded to the next step. Now, I need to mix the fire element with my arcane mana. This was the difficult bit. He had to imprint the command he wanted the fire element to do into his arcane mana.
It sounded like it should be easy. However, reality begged to differ. When he felt the temperature rising without adding more of the fire element he knew he had succeeded. Ok! Now pull it in!
Callum clenched his jaw as sweat appeared all over his body. His temperature rose as though he had a fever while he concentrated on trying to sense what it was doing to his body. Although it seemed to last for some time only a minute passed.
[Ding!]
[Mana Vessel has been refined. Power, Fire, and Arcane have been increased by 1.]
Several sharp breaths escaped Callum's lips while he stared at his trembling hands. Damn, that was intense He could feel his t-shirt sticking to his back and it was rather uncomfortable.
"Monster..." Maya whispered.
"Hmm?" Callum noticed her complexion had paled as he raised an eyebrow.
"That was vessel refinement, right?" She placed her hand over her heart to try and calm it down. "How did you figure it out on your own?"
Callum tilted his head with a frown. What's she talking about?
"Not every legacy is like yours, Cal." Master Gurung said with a sigh. "Maya, don't ask him anything about this. Even if it goes against your common sense. Think of it as a mixed speciality between his bloodline and The Magician."
"Cal," Master Gurung said with a stern tone as Cal felt mana fill the space between them. "I've silenced this conversation so Maya doesn't hear what I'm about to say. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"The Magician, that ring of yours, uses mind magic to store your entire bloodline's magical research and present it in a way for you to understand. Whatever form it takes in your mind is due to your influence. There are very few legacies that do the same thing."
"Wait, then how are the other Arcanas passed on?"
"By teaching and studying the family legacy." Master Gurung sighed. "I've had to teach Maya everything she knows and she's had to put in the effort to memorise it. Whereas you can think of your legacy as having a shared eidetic memory with your ancestors."
Master Gurung clicked his tongue making it clear he thought having The Magician's Legacy was cheating.
"Most of the Major Arcana either contain powerful spells or effects that are specialised towards a certain type of magic. Yours is highly versatile in comparison, which is why many will want to get their hands on it. No matter what, try not to show anything too far beyond what The Clocktower teaches you."
"Then, why did you ask me to do something that should have been beyond me?"
"I was testing your wisdom." Master Gurung's eyes narrowed as he stared at Callum. "I wanted to see if you'd take a risk. You barely know me but you showed enough for any decent mage to know you have something of value on you. While I can appreciate you may have done it because of your trust in Felix, you need to be more careful in the future."
Callum got the sense Master Gurung was seriously concerned for him. He's right. I'd already considered the possibility he may have had an ulterior motive, but I threw caution to the wind because I trust Grandpa's judgement.
"Well, it seems you're taking what I've said seriously. For now, refine your vessel with fire, light, and air as much as possible with what time we have left. You need to be ready in case The Clocktower issues you with an admittance test."
Callum nodded and thought about their conversation for a bit before continuing with the fire element. It's my weakest one so it makes sense to raise it first. With the mention of a potential test, he felt like he finally understood why Master Gurung had him focusing on mana refinement and storage.

He had managed to raise his fire-related stats by 3 and his air-related ones by 1. Unfortunately, the train had become busier which brought a halt to his training to prevent anyone from noticing the anomalies caused by it.After arriving in London, they had taken a taxi. Callum had fully expected to be brought to Big Ben considering the organisation was called The Clocktower. However, they stopped outside an old antique shop that nobody glanced at twice."Hey, why are we here?" Callum asked Maya as Master Gurung paid the driver. "I don't know." Maya shrugged. "It's my first time in London outside of airports."Callum grimaced when he realised there
Callum's eyes went wide as they stepped inside the room. He had expected to find a woman behind a desk in a neat office. However, what he stepped into instead was the largest garden he had ever seen!Shrubs, trees, hedges, and flowers he had never seen were dotted around the landscape. Their colours and hues made a perfect harmony that seemed to soothe his soul. Soon, he heard the sound of birds chirping. As the fragrant scents washed over him, Callum spotted cats, dogs, foxes, bees, ants, and many other living creatures going about their business. A short distance away, a stunning woman in her early thirties sat inside an octagon-shaped white gazebo. Her light brown hair was done up in a tress, and her white day dress gave her a certain look of purity. That, combined with the scenery, made her look like a nature goddess descended to earth."My, my," The woman said with a bright smile as she turned to look at her guests. "Who do we have here? The elusive Hermit of all people! I must s
"Wait!" Cal said, but it was too late."Where are we?" Maya looked around the room they had appeared in.Callum cocked an eyebrow as he scanned the large but almost empty room. There was a comfortable-looking four-poster bed in the middle of one wall with a set of drawers and a wardrobe against another. The strangest thing though, was a desk and chair with a black gem-like ball embedded in it.A knock sounded against one of the three thick wooden doors in the room and Maya was quick to open it. On the other side was a young woman with dark circles under her eyes. "Is Callum Shaw here?" The woman asked as she peered into the room. "I'm here to deliver his materials and explain a few things to him.""I'm right here," Cal said as he waved her in. "Maya, give her some room.""Thank you. My name's Emily Fletcher." The woman smiled brightly despite her evident exhaustion. "First, let me say congratulations on joining The Clocktower. You must be quite skilled to pass the entrance exam despit
Callum cursed as he rushed through the hallway. His hair was still wet, and he'd missed breakfast. Thank god for that enchanted thing in the bathroom that cleans clothes. It would have been embarrassing to arrive on the first day with odour issues.Luckily, the bracelet is enchanted to show where your next class is. Cal grinned as he stared at the black metal band on his left wrist. The enchantment was pointing at a door on his right a short distance away. There were a few minutes left until the class started, so Callum paused outside to catch his breath before going inside. Silence descended in the lecture room as he opened the door and stepped inside. His classmates stared at him with confused expressions, and a young man in the middle row looking down at him opened his mouth to say something."Callum!" Emily squealed from the second row, which drew everyone's attention to her.Callum sighed in relief. At least there's one person I know in my first class. His relief was short-lived
"Well, this is a pleasant surprise." Professor Morales said while staring at him. "Our first success within minutes of class starting! I didn't expect you to succeed until you asked for help, and we had a few classes together."She sounded absolutely delighted as the rest of the class stared at him with a mix of awe and envy. Even Emily, near the front, had her mouth hanging open as she looked at him as if he were a monster."Please, tell me, what classification is your new spell?""It's a ward-type spell," Cal replied as he felt his face heating up."You hear that class? Mr Shaw showed wisdom beyond what most fresh young mages do. It's important to have a way to defend yourself before focusing on other methods. Now, if you would, please show us your spell."Cal gulped as he removed his hands from the cube and looked around the class. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it now. Whirlpool!Cal stood up and moved back as he stretched out his arm. His mana flowed through his body, cr
Callum sighed as he sat back and watched the others for a while. After several minutes, no one else had created a spell. 'What's going on? It's not that hard.'Cal frowned as he noticed the tense expressions of his classmates. He could tell they were concentrating, and nobody seemed to be slacking off. Even Professor Morales wore a look that said it was perfectly normal. 'Did I get lucky?'No matter how he thought about it, that shouldn't be the case. 'There's only one way to find out.' Callum shrugged his shoulders and placed his hands on the cube again. As the interface popped up, Cal already had a spell in mind. Now that he knew how spells were made and that they had a 'memory' of their own, there was something he wanted to make his mana refinement easier. Before long, a green glow lit up the class from its rear. Callum almost wondered if he had become deaf because of the silence. Unanimously, the whole class turned to stare at him again."Ahem," Professor Morales cleared her throa
[Name: Arcane Bullet Classification: Assault Stage: Circle Elements: Arcane Complexity: 2 Power: 4 Secondary Power: 0 Required Mana: 2 (Expand) (Expanded): Arcane: 2 Description: A low-power ranged arcane-type spell.]Callum barely paid any attention to the notification as he met the hungry gazes of his classmates. 'Well, this should be enough for now, right?' He licked his lips as he removed his hands from the cube and lay back in his chair.'It would be nice to have more spells, but I've already drawn too much attention. There must be a way to create spells away from all these prying eyes.'Cal was oblivious to his classmates' thoughts as he relaxed at the back of the class. His casual attitude made them feel like he was saying this course was too easy and they were insignificant in his eyes.Of course, Callum had no such thoughts. Well, apart from the easy part. Mages were notoriously competitive and always searching for ways to improve their standing among their peers.
"Hmph!" Amesbury grunted triumphantly. "You're not the only Major Arcana in this joint class anymore, Hans!""Oh, shit!" Emily moaned beside Cal. "That's Hans Müller! He inherited The Tower legacy from his family. Apparently, there was a tragic event, and his older sister, who should have inherited it, died. Watch yourself, Cal."Callum frowned as he glanced at Hans. The guy was around six foot and four inches tall. Which meant he towered over everyone from the two classes. He had a rugged square jaw, dark hair, and piercing blue eyes. "That's him. Over there!" Amesbury gleefully pointed Callum out. "That's Callum Shaw, The Magician! Are you scared now?""Shaw? The Magician?" Hans grunted as he scanned Callum before marching up to him. "Are you Felix Shaw's grandson?"Callum reeled in shock. "You knew my grandpa?""That's right." Hans nodded as a grin spread across his face. "Master Felix personally trained me in the basics when I awakened! If it weren't for his support, my family ma
