CHAPTER SEVEN: PAINFUL MISTRUST.

"Get lost!" A pissed-off Miles finally shut the door elevator on Edmund's face. He finally got rid of the bastard.

Miles had always known that the sales director had coveted his wife ever since she joined the company. He just wished Lola could see things clearly for what they truly are.

“Miles, where did you get the money from?” Lola suddenly looked at her husband with a worried gaze. "Did you steal it from somewhere?" Her eyes suddenly widened as a realization crossed her mind. “Oh my god! Please, tell me you didn’t borrow this from a loan shark?”

Miles couldn't believe the words that were coming out of his wife's mouth. How could she suddenly think the worst of him? Did she really think there was no legal way he could have gotten his daughter's hospital bill? Seeing how his wife was treating him like a stranger while praising Edmund left Miles deeply hurt.

“My goodness! Miles, answer me!” Lola began tearing up as she pointed an accusing finger at him. “Have you lost your mind?! Where the heck are we supposed to get enough money to pay them back?”

Miles couldn’t bear to watch Lola breaking down out of fear. He decided it was time he revealed the truth to his wife, including his real background. He couldn’t keep his family suffering like this when he now had access to massive wealth as the new heir of the Creek’s business empire.

“Babe, you need to calm down and let me explain…..” Miles didn’t get to finish his words though, as Lola slapped him across the face, much harder than the last time.

"Never, in your sad and pitiful life, tell me to calm down again. Not after you just put a target on our backs" Lola's words dripped with venom as she stared hatefully at her husband. "Not only do I have to worry about taking care of my sick daughter and a sad excuse for a husband, I now have to worry about settling things with dangerous loan sharks. Do you even know how high their interest rates are? Once you borrow from them, they make sure that you spend the rest of your life trying to pay them back."

Miles was deeply stunned by Lola's action. He now had a deep red handprint right across his right cheek. It stung, but not as much as the disappointment welling in his heart at the moment. When did Lola become so impatient with him? When did she start seeing him as a sad excuse for a husband? Had it been long since she started harboring such a strong hatred for him in her heart?

Miles couldn’t help but wonder if he missed any sign and he soon realized that Lola had begun growing distant from him a month after she began working directly under Edmund Porsche. That man had executed multiple schemes to emasculate Miles in Lola’s eyes, and by the look of things, he might have succeeded.

Miles turned his gaze back to his wife, tears of emotional pain brimming at the edges of his eyes. “Lola, do you hate me so much?”

Lola's eyes widened in shock at the question, and that seemed to douse the anger in her heart. She quickly averted her gaze, as she couldn't bear to keep staring at the mark she left on his face. She was rarely violent, and she couldn't help but wonder if she truly did love Miles anymore.

It took more than a minute passing by for Miles to realize that Lola wasn’t going to answer his question. “I see.” Her silence, to him, was answer enough. He turned his back to her. “Keep an eye on our daughter. I should return to the company.” He then left the hospital.

Lola, on the other hand, simply watched him leave. She realized she had no desire to keep in here.

Miles had gone as far as to come out of hiding from the family he had left behind all for his daughter and his wife, but in the end, she couldn't see him as a capable husband. Miles' heart was at the lowest it had ever been since his mother died. He decided it was time to end things and quit pretending like he couldn't be anything other than a security man.

Unfortunately for Miles, his trials were far from over.
