"Go on," she whispered. "You know you want to."

He took a deep breath and stepped forward, approaching Mona with a hesitant smile. "I just wanted to say," he began, his voice faltering slightly. "I'm really glad to be here, and I appreciate everything you're doing for us."

She looked at him, and he saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes. But then she smiled, and the tension in the air seemed to dissipate.

"It's not easy," Mona admitted. "But we've learned to be resourceful and rely on each other. And we have our ways of staying safe. We take turns keeping watch, and we have lookouts posted at all times. And if we ever need to hide, we know how to make ourselves invisible to outsiders."

She said it so matter-of-factly, as if this were the most normal thing in the world. But Elliott could only imagine how difficult and dangerous it must be, to live like this, always on the move, always looking over your shoulder.
