His dreams were always the same.
It always started with him walking into one of the Ivy training rooms only to see an exact replica of himself training intensely. Mage energy flowed ceaselessly through his entire body as he summoned water from the air and try to hold it in place as it grew in size. It grew bigger but his body would ache all over in return and his clothes drenched in sweat, from having to release so much energy at once.He would stop to rest and even out his breaths, but after resuming his training, nothing would flow out of him. Not a drop of energy flowed even after trying over and over. He would watch himself panic and grow scared from the fear of being powerless.Every single time he dreamed, it was the same and no matter how much he yelled at himself to not take a break and just push through till the end, or take things easy, slow and steady, he didn't seem to hear or notice anyone speaking to him. He always took a break and had the same result every time.Frustration and anger would take over both images and that anger would explode into nothingness. He would jolt out of sleep at the exact time of explosion all covered in sweat.Sora woke up breathing hard. He was never able to speak of his dreams, even with Ryo. They haunted him in more ways than he could ever express and he knew words would fail him if he tried. It was barely dawn when Sora woke up.His eyes were wide open and they burned from the insides. He knew trying to go back to sleep would be impossible so he sat up in bed for a few seconds before getting up.The lights were off and he let it stay that way and walked to his bathroom blindly. He tried opening the door but it was already open. He questioned whether or not he locked the door before going to bed but didn't make anything of it until he switched on the bathroom lights."Shit!" Sora stepped backwards abruptly making him lose balance and fall to the ground."What?""How did you get—" He was in the middle of his sentence when it dawned on him "You picked my lock again didn't you?""Yes" he replied sounding completely unbotheredHis flat tone vexed Sora more. "Ryo!""What? I wonder why you still get shocked. You should be used to it by now.""I should be used to waking up to find someone in my room?""Not someone, me. You should be used to finding me in your room.""How long have you been here?""I'm most sure but it's been a while. I watched you sleep."Sora put his hand to his forehead and ran his hand through his hair. "Ryo, you've got to stop doing this. I will really pass out one day."Ryo moved closer to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "I told you, we have the best Healers, you'll be back to normal in no time if you pass out." Ryo glanced at Sora's shirt "But it looks like you already had a heart attack in your sleep.""What?""You're soaked in sweat and judging from the way you jolted out of sleep, something is definitely wrong.""I'm fine.""You were breathing hard.""Heat" Sora replied quickly trying to wrap up the conversationRyo stared intensely at Sora, from one eye to the other. The weather in Namyrs had been harsh making everyone dorn their cloaks at all times. He knew he was lying but he decided not to push it. "Alright, if you say so."Ryo walked past Sora and headed for a chair. Sora washed up and dried his face before heading back into the room."Why are you here anyways?"Ryo adjusted in his seat. "Things got crazy at midnight.""How come?""We found another body.""What! Where?""Close to the Hunters area.""The Hunters' area? Shouldn't that be the most secure place in all of Ivy?""It is, which makes the whole thing more alarming.""This is crazy."Sora wondered how unsafe the Ivy really was now. If a soul eater could have taken someone close to the Hunters' area unnoticed, nowhere was safe."These attacks seem very calculated. It keeps attacking and it's sure to not get caught. This is the Ivy, the most secure place in Namyrs that every soul eater fears but it's still staying. It's definitely after something.""We think so too, but what?" Ryo replied.Sora stood wondering, what would such an intelligent soul eater really want from the Ivy?"Hold on, shouldn't you be there, I mean with the Hunters?""I was there for a meeting but I came here immediately after."Sora seemed confused. "Why? Wouldn't the Hunters want to intensify security?""They would need as many Hunters as they can get."Ryo moved from his seat and began to fix Sora's bed. "You were alone.""Okayyy?" Sora was expecting a more detailed response."You were alone, by yourself, unprotected."Sora felt the strings on his heart pull and water hit the back of his eyes. He tried speaking but his voice broke. After a while, he spoke; "You know I am surrounded by other mages right?"Ryo finally got into bed and covered up. "I had to be sure."Sora stood watching Ryo as he shut his eyes to sleep."Sora?" Ryo called out with his eyes still shut.He cleared his throat "Yes?""You have a snoring problem, you should look into it.""I don't have a snoring problem." Sora retorted sharply."I have watched you sleep. I know.""You realize that just sounds totally creepy, right?""Whatever."Ryo took the sheets and dragged them over his head to end the discussion. It had been four days since the Ivy Meeting but everyone still seemed tense. Mages walked in smaller groups and avoided being out long before dusk. Once the safest place in all of Namyrs, the Ivy had now become filled with so much anxiety and fear.Hunters still stood guard at several locations in the Ivy, and their presence gave some sort of comfort but it wasn't enough to rid people of their anxiety. As expected, words didn't go out about the new death. The Hunters had kept it hush, the masters would probably know too. Seeing as everyone was already tense, it was probably a wise decision to not share the information.Ryo and Sora walked into the Dining Hall, and headed straight for the serving stand. They caught Konan's eyes as they walked, Sora straightened his hood over his head but Ryo seemed completely unbothered. They had barely sat down to eat when they were approached by another Hunter. When on duty, the Hunters' had a black form fitting uniform with their rank badges on them
The skies became darker and the air colder. Roars and laughter from the Hunter echoed through the woods as it shed the body it had dorned. The dark clouds gave way and the Soul Eater within it came forward. Its dark energy terrified Sora beyond anything he had ever felt and he could see Ryo's hands tremble even though his energy surged through them. Never in his lifetime had he thought seeing a soul eater was possible, but here it stood before them. They were indeed living their last moments. Descriptions had not done justice to them at all. Soul Eaters were dark creatures known to traumatize even the strongest mages, just from looking at them. Soul Eaters had the same gaunt skull-like face that was slightly bent to the side, almost like they had been hit in the jaw. With black eyes that matched their black exterior, fangs, and claws that seemed ready for action, and dark energy that flowed around them, waiting to draw in its victim. It was said that the claws of a soul eater could
Namrys was colder these days. The switch from the hot summers to the cold winter had been quick. Maybe too quick. Days are shorter and even the flowers seemed to have shifted from full green to a slight brown. This particular night was extremely cold and white fog formed as he exhaled one more time. Crouched on the roof of the infirmary of the Ivy, Sora sat alone facing East towards the Ivy gates. He was covered in layers of clothing, but the cold made him feel naked. He had his earmuffs on, but it didn't stop the cold from freezing his ears either. The cold air filled his lungs and left his skin dry constantly. The thick fog that covered the city should have made it impossible for him to see clearly, but he could see the second hand on the city clock afar off as it hit another sixty and he could see the minute hand move slightly to hit twelve sharp. The clock dinged nine times. Nine pm, Thursday. Ten days since they got attacked. Ten days since he died and was reborn. Three d
"Are you okay?" Sora sat still on the bed and didn't respond. He tuned out for most of their conversation and instead, studied her with keen eyes. Whether or not she minded his silence, she didn't show it because she kept talking. She had to be at least twice his age, maybe thrice. She would have been in the Academy for a very long time because he could see the aging lines that were starting to form across her face and her lips which had started to give a slight bow. A thick portion of her hair on the left was a sharp gray color that stood out amongst her brunette hair which had been neatly styled into a low bun but her petite figure and soft voice could throw anyone off when guessing her age, it still had him guessing. She had come in to examine him again but unlike the previous times, she stayed to talk to him today. Today, the eleventh day since he died, and four days since he woke up. He still had no intentions of speaking, but something about Laya drew him in. He decided he m
Explaining to the Ivy Masters about all that happened in hopes that they would believe him didn't seem like a good plan either.Sora put his hood over his head looking down as he made his way to his room whilst preparing to face the reality of Ryo's absence when he heard a loud shout from across the hallway."Halfling!"Not today, gods!Sora turned and began to walk back the way he had come without looking up to see who had shouted. He didn't need to.He could hear the sounds of the footsteps that approached, and he quickened his steps too.Sora broke into a run but he was knocked off balance as a strong force tangled his legs, making him trip and fall to the ground and it gave enough time for them to catch up to him.Dai grabbed him from behind and pulled him up as Marce broke the water force still tangled around his legs."Hello
I didn'tI didn't kill himHe's not deadTears poured down Sora's face as several thoughts ran through his mind.I killed someone. I killed Konan.Gods how!?Sora ran into the woods and kept running till his legs gave out and he crashed to the ground. He lay on the wet floor and tried not to process anything but the thoughts kept coming.Sora struggled and pushed himself up, staggering through the woods till he found a clearing and sat underneath a tree.He buried his face in his hands and closed his eyes, but the image of Konan's lifeless body didn't leave his head. "What have I done?"His life couldn't be any worse. From being attacked by a soul eater and losing Ryo to battling for his life, now he had killed a mage and would get kicked out of the Academy."I didn't kill him." He repeated
"Come along young man."Z walked ahead of Sora who seemed too stunned by his surroundings. Never in his life had he thought he would walk through the Hunters' area. It was completely different from what he had imagined. For some reason he expected the area to be fully dark-themed and had imagined seeing dark creatures with very serious-looking mages everywhere but this was different. The Hunters he saw looked like normal mages. Even Z seemed normal compared to what he has imagined. They walked until they came to a large room with a serving stand by the entrance. The Hunters' dining hall was small compared to the hall he was used to in the academy, but it was functional. They got meals, and both sat at a table close to the door. They ate in silence, but Z seemed more interested in getting her day over with. Sora wanted to ask questions about the mission she had been on, but he kept quiet. After she wa
"Hey"Sora held Ryo's hand in his and squeezed tightly. His hands were cold against his but he did not mind."I miss you and I wish you were here… I try to imagine you're out on your first mission and I'm just here waiting till you will get back. You will get back won't you?""My life has been crazy wild since you went on your mission and you'd be so shocked by how much change there has been since then… I went to the Hunters' area. Can you believe it? I took the route through the woods… it's tricky actually, I see why we couldn't find it easily, and I'm not sure I even know the route anymore."Sora smiled to ease the tightness in his throat."and I almost killed someone, too.""Guess who?" After a quick dramatic pause, Sora added; "Konan."The thought of killing anyone has never crossed his mind. Asides not bein
