It had been four days since the Ivy Meeting but everyone still seemed tense. Mages walked in smaller groups and avoided being out long before dusk. Once the safest place in all of Namyrs, the Ivy had now become filled with so much anxiety and fear.
Hunters still stood guard at several locations in the Ivy, and their presence gave some sort of comfort but it wasn't enough to rid people of their anxiety. As expected, words didn't go out about the new death. The Hunters had kept it hush, the masters would probably know too. Seeing as everyone was already tense, it was probably a wise decision to not share the information.Ryo and Sora walked into the Dining Hall, and headed straight for the serving stand. They caught Konan's eyes as they walked, Sora straightened his hood over his head but Ryo seemed completely unbothered. They had barely sat down to eat when they were approached by another Hunter. When on duty, the Hunters' had a black form fitting uniform with their rank badges on them. This one was a level two mage. All Hunters had an air of calm mystery to them, but this Hunters was different. He wasn't calm, he kept looking everywhere in the room but he spoke to Ryo."The Hunters are meeting in an hour."Ryo seemed surprised. "Why? Meeting isn't until much later tonight. Did something happen?""They'll explain things at the meeting.""Alright."He only took two steps away from them when he returned."Take the route in the woods.""Why?""Orders." He looked to Sora. "And bring him along."Ryo squinted and a frown formed across his forehead. Sora's face seemed more puzzled than Ryo because his lips were slightly ajar."Him? Why?" Ryo asked."Just orders."Ryo nodded and the Hunter left.Sora couldn't understand. First, he was never invited to things. He didn't have the qualifications to be a part of any meeting, more so, a Hunters' meeting. Something was off but Ryo didn't say anything, so he kept quiet."Errr….Ryo, haven't we taken this route twice already?""Can't be. I know the way."After they finished at the dining hall, Ryo led them into the woods. This path to the Hunters' area was a secret only the Hunters and top masters knew about. The location was revealed only when a Hunter had completed his training to mark the beginning of their missions outside of the Ivy.When Ryo completed his training, he, along with eight others, had been shown this route into the Hunter's area and they were to begin missions but when the Ivy started getting attacks, it was put on hold. Now as they walked through the woods, Ryo seemed unsure about his directions but he kept going."I know that tree." Sora said, pointing to the weirdest looking tree around. It's a Fennantia. There's only one of them in the Ivy and I've seen it twice now.""We're not lost." Ryo responded although he sounded unsure.Sora stopped moving. The absence of the sound of his footsteps made Ryo stop too. Ryo looked back to see Sora standing akimbo with a blank expression on his face."You know you can admit we're lost, yeah?""Okay, fine. Sora, I think we're lost.""Okay, what do we do?""We can try retracing our steps.""Alright"They turned and began retracing their steps but no matter how many times they tried, they always ended up at the same tree."I think we can give up now." Sora said as he sat on the ground and rested on a tree.Ryo sat too "I'm sorry""It's alright, I probably needed the exercise.""The meeting is soon, more Hunters will take this route and they'll help.""Yeah, I guess so.""We just have to wait."And so they waited. Sora shut his eye for a while and sleep took over.Strong wind began to blow and the weather became colder.Sora opened his eyes to find Ryo pacing back and forth. Sora pulled his hood over his head and got up to talk to him."It's been a while, the meeting should have started by now but no one took this route."Sora turned and looked in all directions. "Ryo, I don't think anyone is coming.""Someone has to. You heard him when he approached me right? You were there, you heard him.""I know. All of a sudden, a dark cloud formed above and Sora felt a piercing chill burn his skin. Ryo must have felt the same because color drained from his face instantly. They looked dead at each other and started to survey their surroundings.Soon, the Hunter that had approached them at the Dining Hall appeared from behind trees and walked to them, stopping at a short distance.Relief flooded their faces at the sight of another person."What took you so long?" Ryo asked"The view was nice, I had to savor the moment." The Hunter replied."What do you mean?""I mean it was fun playing with your minds and watching you walk aimlessly. Tell me, how did it feel going around in circles? I must say, it was easy to trap your minds." He asked with a grin on his face.Ryo and Sora looked at each other with baffled expressions "You did that? How?" Sora asked."Oh it's easy to play with the human mind. Just pick a picture of their desires and paint their minds with it. In your case, you wanted to get to the Hunters area, through this route, that was your desire. I simply kept you locked in it.""Mages can do that?" Sora looked to Ryo"No. Mages do not mess with people's minds." Ryo stood staring directly at the Hunter."So he's not a mage?" Sora was beyond confused."He is not." Ryo's words were filled with so much certainty."If he's not a mage then what is he?" Sora asked Ryo."Get behind me Sora." Sora looked at the Hunter, he had a deadly expression on his face that scared Sora from within so much he couldn't move"Now!" Ryo yelled as he pushed Sora behind him.The skies became darker and the air colder. Roars and laughter from the Hunter echoed through the woods as it shed the body it had dorned. The dark clouds gave way and the Soul Eater within it came forward. Its dark energy terrified Sora beyond anything he had ever felt and he could see Ryo's hands tremble even though his energy surged through them. Never in his lifetime had he thought seeing a soul eater was possible, but here it stood before them. They were indeed living their last moments. Descriptions had not done justice to them at all. Soul Eaters were dark creatures known to traumatize even the strongest mages, just from looking at them. Soul Eaters had the same gaunt skull-like face that was slightly bent to the side, almost like they had been hit in the jaw. With black eyes that matched their black exterior, fangs, and claws that seemed ready for action, and dark energy that flowed around them, waiting to draw in its victim. It was said that the claws of a soul eater could
Namrys was colder these days. The switch from the hot summers to the cold winter had been quick. Maybe too quick. Days are shorter and even the flowers seemed to have shifted from full green to a slight brown. This particular night was extremely cold and white fog formed as he exhaled one more time. Crouched on the roof of the infirmary of the Ivy, Sora sat alone facing East towards the Ivy gates. He was covered in layers of clothing, but the cold made him feel naked. He had his earmuffs on, but it didn't stop the cold from freezing his ears either. The cold air filled his lungs and left his skin dry constantly. The thick fog that covered the city should have made it impossible for him to see clearly, but he could see the second hand on the city clock afar off as it hit another sixty and he could see the minute hand move slightly to hit twelve sharp. The clock dinged nine times. Nine pm, Thursday. Ten days since they got attacked. Ten days since he died and was reborn. Three d
"Are you okay?" Sora sat still on the bed and didn't respond. He tuned out for most of their conversation and instead, studied her with keen eyes. Whether or not she minded his silence, she didn't show it because she kept talking. She had to be at least twice his age, maybe thrice. She would have been in the Academy for a very long time because he could see the aging lines that were starting to form across her face and her lips which had started to give a slight bow. A thick portion of her hair on the left was a sharp gray color that stood out amongst her brunette hair which had been neatly styled into a low bun but her petite figure and soft voice could throw anyone off when guessing her age, it still had him guessing. She had come in to examine him again but unlike the previous times, she stayed to talk to him today. Today, the eleventh day since he died, and four days since he woke up. He still had no intentions of speaking, but something about Laya drew him in. He decided he m
Explaining to the Ivy Masters about all that happened in hopes that they would believe him didn't seem like a good plan either.Sora put his hood over his head looking down as he made his way to his room whilst preparing to face the reality of Ryo's absence when he heard a loud shout from across the hallway."Halfling!"Not today, gods!Sora turned and began to walk back the way he had come without looking up to see who had shouted. He didn't need to.He could hear the sounds of the footsteps that approached, and he quickened his steps too.Sora broke into a run but he was knocked off balance as a strong force tangled his legs, making him trip and fall to the ground and it gave enough time for them to catch up to him.Dai grabbed him from behind and pulled him up as Marce broke the water force still tangled around his legs."Hello
I didn'tI didn't kill himHe's not deadTears poured down Sora's face as several thoughts ran through his mind.I killed someone. I killed Konan.Gods how!?Sora ran into the woods and kept running till his legs gave out and he crashed to the ground. He lay on the wet floor and tried not to process anything but the thoughts kept coming.Sora struggled and pushed himself up, staggering through the woods till he found a clearing and sat underneath a tree.He buried his face in his hands and closed his eyes, but the image of Konan's lifeless body didn't leave his head. "What have I done?"His life couldn't be any worse. From being attacked by a soul eater and losing Ryo to battling for his life, now he had killed a mage and would get kicked out of the Academy."I didn't kill him." He repeated
"Come along young man."Z walked ahead of Sora who seemed too stunned by his surroundings. Never in his life had he thought he would walk through the Hunters' area. It was completely different from what he had imagined. For some reason he expected the area to be fully dark-themed and had imagined seeing dark creatures with very serious-looking mages everywhere but this was different. The Hunters he saw looked like normal mages. Even Z seemed normal compared to what he has imagined. They walked until they came to a large room with a serving stand by the entrance. The Hunters' dining hall was small compared to the hall he was used to in the academy, but it was functional. They got meals, and both sat at a table close to the door. They ate in silence, but Z seemed more interested in getting her day over with. Sora wanted to ask questions about the mission she had been on, but he kept quiet. After she wa
"Hey"Sora held Ryo's hand in his and squeezed tightly. His hands were cold against his but he did not mind."I miss you and I wish you were here… I try to imagine you're out on your first mission and I'm just here waiting till you will get back. You will get back won't you?""My life has been crazy wild since you went on your mission and you'd be so shocked by how much change there has been since then… I went to the Hunters' area. Can you believe it? I took the route through the woods… it's tricky actually, I see why we couldn't find it easily, and I'm not sure I even know the route anymore."Sora smiled to ease the tightness in his throat."and I almost killed someone, too.""Guess who?" After a quick dramatic pause, Sora added; "Konan."The thought of killing anyone has never crossed his mind. Asides not bein
He struggled to get out of bed and moved to open the door.Seeing Z at the door in uniform awakened his senses completely. She glanced at him from head to toe. "Meet me in the training area in ten minutes."She walked away immediately, and he was left standing dumbfounded. He hurried and freshened up before hurrying out of the room.He had moved into the Hunters' area the day before, after seeing Ryo. The move had been quick and effortless, as a result of not having much to do.Sora walked quickly until he came to the open area they had passed through his first time in the Hunters' area.Z stood there already waiting and before her was a bowl on a stand. It reminded him of the first practical class he attended. The beginning of his shame and it left a bitter taste in his mouth.Quickly adjusting himself, he went and stood before Z, bowing his head slig
