Alex looked at the darkened roof as it vibrated dangerously, debris pouring into his eyes, the building was falling apart.
The smoke was too thick and it stung his eyes. He looked at the old man again, the flames were not near him yet, it would take a while for it to get near him, meaning he still had time to get a wet blanket or something to beat the flames and smoke with.Alex turned around, he had to run back through where he came from in search of a wet blanket, time wasn't on his side.He heard a loud rumble, a louder one following the first. The ceiling was collapsing already! He was halfway down the hall already, Alex rushed down the hallway back to the old man, the ground behind him giving way as the ceiling collapsed chasing him and he ran.He grabbed the old man's arm and pulled him into what appeared to be a hallway closet“Al—?” he couldn’t get another word out, as Alex's big hand clamped over his mouth. His muscular arms held him tight and the look in his eyes told him he’d better start praying to his God, as the rumbling grew louder around them. Then they heard loud deafening noises which seemed to go on forever. Alex pulled him down past a few shelves until, finally, they were crouched on the floor behind a large row of toilet paper and towels. His full weight was on him, crushing him to the hard ground. His hand was still over his mouth, blocking out any chance the smoke had to suffocate them. Then there was a final explosion and he watched in horror as the door was ripped off the hinges. A large fire ball came rushing towards them. He tried to dodge just before a large chuck of wood hit his head and everything went black.Alex fought to stay conscious by breathing slowly and blinking his eyes a few times. He’d been hit by a large chunk of wood from the door during the explosion. He felt the slickness of blood oozing down the back of his head, and when he reached back, his hand came away red. He felt the old man's unconscious body under him and when he moved to sit up, he felt a wave of dizziness hit him. He continued to breathe slowly. He knew they needed to get moving, firefighters and extra policemen would soon be here to stop the fire and round up the prisoners. Shaking his head lightly, he demanded that his body start functioning. He looked down at the man and noticed a large knot on his forehead. Gently he pushed the bright red knot aside to take stock of the wound. he might have a concussion. Running his hands over her, he felt for any broken bones or other lesions. He coughed violently as he dragged himself to his feet. The old man opened his eyes slowly, blinking a few times as he slowly sat up, the room was slowly getting licked by the flames, Alex quickly steadied the man as he looked outside the hallway through the rising flames scanning for any exits. He could hear sirens already, he knew the police and the fire department were already here.He quickly helped the old man to his feet, putting his arm around his shoulder, as they quickly moved through the flames, hoping the hot sweat on his body would do his skin justice against the searing flames. They had to get out of here before the building collapsed fully or before the fire department and police got to them.He looked around, desperate to find an exit."The south…" The man croaked, coughing halfway as blood spurted from his mouth."The South gate…. there should be a way there." the man continued.Alex lifted the man, putting him on his back so as to give him leverage to run faster as he headed for the South gate, not minding the flames licking his skin, it was agonizing but he had no choice, this was a chance to get out of here, a chance he had been looking for, for a long time. The corridor leading to the South gate had collapsed already, blocking every part, the fire was bigger than it was in any other part of the prison. The ground vibrated again, it was like an earthquake was taking place, Alex dragged the old man as they dived for cover under a broken dislocated cell. Another rumble began, the walls collapsing on them, the broken cell was doing a good job of shielding them from everything except the debris and the smoke.Alex waited for the rumble to stop, hoping for the fire to have reduced, his skin felt crisp, like he was getting roasted. The old man was a lot stronger than Alex had thought, he had pulled through everything and still looked fine, only the dusty black face gave away the tired look on the man's face.Alex crawled outside the cage as the old man followed suit. The fire was wild, it was everywhere Alex squinted, he could make out a small window from the distance but it was too high.He looked again, beside the window he could make out a cable hanging loosely from the ceiling. If only they had enough time to use the cable as a rope to climb up the window. He knew even if they did it and jumped from the window the jump could render them paralyzed. He limped towards the cable, trying to not think of the wild fire around them, the painw was agonizing but with every step he took her knew he was nearer to his freedom. The old man was right behind him as they zigzagged across the flames towards the cable.Alex pulled on the cable, it was strong enough to carry them one at a time."You go first." He urged the man with a smile to put him at ease."You go….." A loud explosion cut him off, as the building began to vibrate violently, Alex knew this was it, the final explosion to collapse the whole building, they were running late already."We can't make it." The man murmured as a tear streamed down his face.Alex could barely hear him above the noise of the explosion."Go." The man mumbled again"huh?" Alex looked at him, he couldn't hear what the man was saying but all he knew was that they didn't have time for any shitty chatter now.The building shook violently again as the man looked around with an horrified look on his face."Go!" He screamed."Go!" He screamed again."Go! There's no time!" He continued, as he walked backward towards the fire."What do you mean? we're leaving here together!" Alex bellowed."Go! There's no time! The rope can't hold the two of us! the building is going to fall any second from now!" The man continued, his voice was powerful, like he had made up his mind to die."No! I can't leave you!" Alex protested, As the sound of explosions drowned his voice."Go! please! tell my baby girl…daddy loves her!" The man continued, the building had started to collapse.Alex looked at the man as tears streamed down his face, he didn't have much time anymore, the building was already collapsing on them.He gave the man one last look as he started climbing the cable as fast as he could."My wife and son are waiting for me! thank you!" Alex heard the man holler as he got to the window sill. He turned his head to look at the man one last time but the walls had come crashing down on him as the last bits of the building gave way, resulting in a big explosion. With tears in his eyes, Alex let go of the rope, jumping into the cold dark air, hoping he survived. In his life,Alex had done many crazy things but this was the craziest. The air was cold against his face as he leaped into the air, the building crumbling and going up in flames behind him. The hard ground came rushing at him. Unable to stop the momentum, he lifted his leg to take the brunt of the impact.A roar erupted from his chest as his whole body connected with the solid hard ground, pain splintered through his body, especially his leg. He had angled his body so his legs could take the fall and held his hands tight around his head as he crashed to the floor.Everything went dark.*****With every ounce of strength she had left Joanne tried to hold herself together, Marshall had called her late last night telling her about the fire at the prison, she had rushed here, driving all through the night and here she was, in Marshall's cramped up apartment, Marshall was lucky, he wasn't on shift last night but immediately he heard of the fire he had rushed straight to the prison. He had
He had taken some of the drugs he found on the cabinet and he felt better. He watched her eyes blink several times. She didn't look worried but he knew he still had to put her at ease.“No one knows what happened to me. It’s all over the news that a lot of us were killed in that explosion." Alex said as he motioned towards the black couch. " Yeah, you guys don't have much time.I'll call them to set the record straight,” Marshall chipped in.Alex glanced over at him, he looked like he was prepared for whatever storm was coming“What—what would happen if they get hold of you? or if they know I'm with you?” She twisted her hands in her lap, starting to look very nervous.Alex shook his head firmly and she relaxed a little in her seat. “We shouldn't be worrying about that, we should be preparing to leave here before twelve.once it's twelve, every of the city's exits would be shut."“What did the police say?” She leaned closer to his chair as she asked Marshall, who stood across the room
Joanne walked into the dark room and felt around for a light switch. When the room flooded with light, she gasped. It was full of tall shelves stocked with everything from flashlights to rubber hoses. She almost tripped over her backpack as she started walking the aisles. Why would Marshall have all this stuff? Who was he? How did Alex know him?Taking the bag, she started walking the aisles, grabbing a flashlight, grabbing a handful of batteries, a box of matches, and other basic items. When she reached the back, her bag was heavy with stuff she thought she’d need. She’d spent four years in the Brownies growing up and knew what it took to go camping. She spotted a small silver box on the top shelf and took it down. Inside was a silver .45. She reached in and felt its weight, knowing she had to make room in her bag. She grabbed a box of bullets and before placing the gun in the small side pocket of the bag, she made sure it was unloaded. Her father had forced her to take gun classes a
Alex walked at a steady pace as he watched the back of Joanne’s dark head. She defiantly fit in to the crowd. a few heads turned when she walked down the street and men had seemed to fall aside with their tongues wagging. At least that’s what he imagined. She had that effect on men, kind of like the coyote in the cartoons when steam shot out of its ears, and its eyes did the slot machine spin.Okay, so it wasn’t that bad. If he wanted to be totally honest, that’s the way he’d felt when he’d first seen her. She’d walked across the room in a hot red outfit even though she looked sad, he’d lost control of his wits. Not only had his temperature risen, well … he shook his head and cleared the image from his mind. They’d been walking for almost an hour and already he could tell she was slowing down. So far they hadn’t run into any trouble. When Joanne stumbled, he reached out and took her arm. She yanked it free and glared at him. He smiled at her in return, which only caused her to frown.
Joanne was going to kill him. They were on hour five of their ‘small trek’, as he’d called it, and not only were her feet killing her, she was sure she’d sweat more fluids than she had taken in, or weighed, for that matter. He’d never told her they were going to be hiking through the jungle at top speeds. If he had, she would have told him where to go and how to get there.“Arg… Alex.” She corrected herself. “I have to stop.”“Shhh!” He’d been acting strange for the last half a mile. She had a few rocks in her boots and needed a moment to use the nearest tree. Her shirt was sticking to her skin, and she wanted nothing more than to remove it and toss it aside. But the bugs were so bad under the canopy of the trees, she didn’t want any new bites on exposed skin. Looking at the back of his head, she realized he wasn’t fighting any bugs off.“Alex, I need to stop.” She thought this name suited him better than Argon. He turned and looked at her, his eyes burrowing into hers. She tried very
Alex watched Joanne across the small space as she slept. He’d sat across from her last night at Marshall’s and watched her, much like he was doing now. She slept like he’d dreamed of doing for years, like the whole world had dropped off and she had no cares. He knew the hike had been hard on her. Hell, it had been hard on him, but he was used to being uncomfortable and tired. He’d done it all his adult life and had no plans of letting up any time soon. He liked helping people out and working with his buddies from his time in the Connery corps. He was very glad that he and Marshall had patched up their relationship. He’d been his best friend for the last year. Alex had hated knowing the man was not around to call when he got in a tight spot. But above everything else about his current life, Alex liked the danger and the thrills he got when he outmaneuvered his opponents. It was like a game to him. He’d always been good at it. When he was a kid, he’d played paintball wars with all his f
* * *Joanne felt the cold stone on her back and Alex’s breath on her neck. She wouldn’t regret this move. She’d always taken what she’d wanted and she’d wanted him. Especially after walking out of the cave and seeing him standing naked under the water. She would have had to be a saint not to want to jump him. His muscles were impressive in clothes, but bare, she just wanted to lick him up and down.As she felt his breathing slow, she knew he was going to be pissed at her for maneuvering him so easily. She’d never seduced someone like that before and she felt liberated in doing so. Actually, she wanted to do it again, but doubted they had the time or could spare the energy. Her hands felt a few small scars on his back that she’d seen the other night when she’d been following him. Reaching down, she ran her hand over the larger one along the lower part of his spine.“How did you get this?” she asked as he held himself still."in prison?" she asked again.“Hmm. I should have been lookin
Alex pulled her back into the brush quickly and didn’t wait to see if they’d been spotted as they took off running back the way they’d come. When they’d made it twenty yards he chanced a glance over his shoulder and saw several heads bobbing in the trees, heading their way. Damn!He grabbed her arm and they made a sharp turn, cutting to the right down a path he knew was dangerous. He didn’t think they had any choice. He didn’t know if the men were the feds or other armed forces but he could tell they were looking for people like them. Hell, they could open fire on them through the bushes. All he knew was they couldn’t chance stopping and ask them what they wanted.“Sorry, Princess. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. He grabbed her and flung himself off the cliff, trying to take the brunt of the impact himself. The rains the night before helped their muddy journey down the slippery ravine. As they slid down the steep hill, Alex grunted every time his back connec
