In his life,Alex had done many crazy things but this was the craziest.
The air was cold against his face as he leaped into the air, the building crumbling and going up in flames behind him. The hard ground came rushing at him. Unable to stop the momentum, he lifted his leg to take the brunt of the impact.A roar erupted from his chest as his whole body connected with the solid hard ground, pain splintered through his body, especially his leg. He had angled his body so his legs could take the fall and held his hands tight around his head as he crashed to the floor.Everything went dark.*****With every ounce of strength she had left Joanne tried to hold herself together, Marshall had called her late last night telling her about the fire at the prison, she had rushed here, driving all through the night and here she was, in Marshall's cramped up apartment, Marshall was lucky, he wasn't on shift last night but immediately he heard of the fire he had rushed straight to the prison. He had called her, telling her he couldn't save her dad but he had managed to save a friend of her dad, he had found the man's body by the side of the collapsed building. She was still shaken by the death of her father as she slowly walked back to where the injured unconscious man lay. Marshall had gone out to the accident site to give a report. The fire had claimed a lot of lives. She straightened the covers on the old sleigh bed and plumped the pillow behind the man who her father had always talked about for the last two years. He had written her countless letters about Alexander Kane, the man wasn't anything short of what she expected. The man had been slipping in and out of consciousness, she could see his eyes blink again.Maybe she had woken him up when she walked into the room."Are you comfortable?" She asked.'That's stupid, Joanne. His face is pale with pain.' She thought to herself. He watched her through thick lashes, his brown eyes, undiluted by flecks of green or gold, looking somehow familiar."Not exactly." He groaned."Now that we have you in the house, Marshall will call a private doctor.""I don't need a doctor.""I can understand why you wouldn't want to go to the hospital, but a doctor will be glad to pay a visit out here, especially with an injury like that." She nodded at his knee which she'd propped up higher than his heart and immediately iced, immediately she and Marshall had carried him from the car to the couch. His knee was pretty fucked, he could see the swell and the cuts around it, he was surprised that he hadn't broken his legs in the fall, the jump had been almost four stories high."As I told you, it's nothing, I'll be fine." His voice was hoarse, probably from pain. He took back his dark hair and shrugged a mile wide shoulders. He was a big man with the build of an athlete."I know how to take care of it." Angling his head to the door, he asked, "Is the Warden gone?""Yes. He went back to find out the protocol the government would put to rearrest the prisoners who escaped, there's definitely going to be a nationwide manhunt." She smiled weakly. "Now I can just take care of you."**Alex looked at her grimly, she was holding up more than he expected.Didn't she just hear that her father had been burnt beyond recognition and he had died in the fire.Yet she had driven almost through three states just for him.She was a busy woman, she owned a company that was planning on competing with Concorp and bringing down the Connery Family, yet she had time to come for him.She must respect her father that much.Even if he wanted to tell her about her father's death, he would do it in the nicest way possible. She looked pale and petite but behind those green eyes, he could see the blazing fire and passion. He knew the government would organize a statewide manhunt for the escaped prisoners any moment from now and the whole city would be flooded with law enforcement agencies. He had to start moving immediately his leg got better. He looked over at Joanne again. He knew if anything happened and they traced him here, she would be in trouble, he couldn't put her in trouble for deciding to help or care for him. That was the last thing he planned on doing.Sarah.She crossed his mind, he wondered what she was up to.He looked around for any laptop or phone, maybe if he googled her, he could learn more about what happened."You look tired, I'll excuse you." Joanne whispered, bringing him out of his thoughts. He closed his eyes so she'd leave, in reality, he needed to plot out his strategy. She quietly switched off the lights and crept to the door, from under half open kids he caught her watching him. After a moment, she shook her head and sighed. His mind drifted back to Sarah, he knew she was praying he died in the fire. The thought of that made him chuckle, he felt anger inside, even after that years he was still filled with anger.Anger from everyone that the Connery family had fucked over. His eyes flew open as he heard tyres screeching in the driveway. He'd slept. The room had been awash with sunshine when Joanne had left, now late afternoon shadows made crisscross patterns on the wall behind the desk. His knee throbbed as he eased himself to a sitting position, looking out of the window he could see Marshall waking up the front porch, his van had soot all over it, Alex could guess where he was coming from.He switched on the basketball lamp and reached for the pain medicine.A still cool glass of water rested next to the bottle, to think that Joanne had come in while he slept didn't sit well with him.In truth not only did his knee hurt like a son of a bitch, but his shoulders ached and his hand was sore. The fall had battered his thirty two year old body, which didn't bounce back as fast as it used to.The door flew open and Marshall stomped in, his face hard as a rock.He looked over at Alex with a grimace,"Hey fella..""Where's Joanne?" He continued gruffly."I don't know." Alex mumbled, his head ached badly, even with the coolness of the water, his throat was still dry."Well y'all better hit the road!""There's going to be a nationwide manhunt starting by twelve o'clock." He continued.Joanne had paused at the door immediately she heard what Marshall said, she looked very anxious."So what do we do?" She asked.Marshall looked over at them with a cocky grin, his rock hard face lighting up with scorn."Run!"He had taken some of the drugs he found on the cabinet and he felt better. He watched her eyes blink several times. She didn't look worried but he knew he still had to put her at ease.“No one knows what happened to me. It’s all over the news that a lot of us were killed in that explosion." Alex said as he motioned towards the black couch. " Yeah, you guys don't have much time.I'll call them to set the record straight,” Marshall chipped in.Alex glanced over at him, he looked like he was prepared for whatever storm was coming“What—what would happen if they get hold of you? or if they know I'm with you?” She twisted her hands in her lap, starting to look very nervous.Alex shook his head firmly and she relaxed a little in her seat. “We shouldn't be worrying about that, we should be preparing to leave here before twelve.once it's twelve, every of the city's exits would be shut."“What did the police say?” She leaned closer to his chair as she asked Marshall, who stood across the room
Joanne walked into the dark room and felt around for a light switch. When the room flooded with light, she gasped. It was full of tall shelves stocked with everything from flashlights to rubber hoses. She almost tripped over her backpack as she started walking the aisles. Why would Marshall have all this stuff? Who was he? How did Alex know him?Taking the bag, she started walking the aisles, grabbing a flashlight, grabbing a handful of batteries, a box of matches, and other basic items. When she reached the back, her bag was heavy with stuff she thought she’d need. She’d spent four years in the Brownies growing up and knew what it took to go camping. She spotted a small silver box on the top shelf and took it down. Inside was a silver .45. She reached in and felt its weight, knowing she had to make room in her bag. She grabbed a box of bullets and before placing the gun in the small side pocket of the bag, she made sure it was unloaded. Her father had forced her to take gun classes a
Alex walked at a steady pace as he watched the back of Joanne’s dark head. She defiantly fit in to the crowd. a few heads turned when she walked down the street and men had seemed to fall aside with their tongues wagging. At least that’s what he imagined. She had that effect on men, kind of like the coyote in the cartoons when steam shot out of its ears, and its eyes did the slot machine spin.Okay, so it wasn’t that bad. If he wanted to be totally honest, that’s the way he’d felt when he’d first seen her. She’d walked across the room in a hot red outfit even though she looked sad, he’d lost control of his wits. Not only had his temperature risen, well … he shook his head and cleared the image from his mind. They’d been walking for almost an hour and already he could tell she was slowing down. So far they hadn’t run into any trouble. When Joanne stumbled, he reached out and took her arm. She yanked it free and glared at him. He smiled at her in return, which only caused her to frown.
Joanne was going to kill him. They were on hour five of their ‘small trek’, as he’d called it, and not only were her feet killing her, she was sure she’d sweat more fluids than she had taken in, or weighed, for that matter. He’d never told her they were going to be hiking through the jungle at top speeds. If he had, she would have told him where to go and how to get there.“Arg… Alex.” She corrected herself. “I have to stop.”“Shhh!” He’d been acting strange for the last half a mile. She had a few rocks in her boots and needed a moment to use the nearest tree. Her shirt was sticking to her skin, and she wanted nothing more than to remove it and toss it aside. But the bugs were so bad under the canopy of the trees, she didn’t want any new bites on exposed skin. Looking at the back of his head, she realized he wasn’t fighting any bugs off.“Alex, I need to stop.” She thought this name suited him better than Argon. He turned and looked at her, his eyes burrowing into hers. She tried very
Alex watched Joanne across the small space as she slept. He’d sat across from her last night at Marshall’s and watched her, much like he was doing now. She slept like he’d dreamed of doing for years, like the whole world had dropped off and she had no cares. He knew the hike had been hard on her. Hell, it had been hard on him, but he was used to being uncomfortable and tired. He’d done it all his adult life and had no plans of letting up any time soon. He liked helping people out and working with his buddies from his time in the Connery corps. He was very glad that he and Marshall had patched up their relationship. He’d been his best friend for the last year. Alex had hated knowing the man was not around to call when he got in a tight spot. But above everything else about his current life, Alex liked the danger and the thrills he got when he outmaneuvered his opponents. It was like a game to him. He’d always been good at it. When he was a kid, he’d played paintball wars with all his f
* * *Joanne felt the cold stone on her back and Alex’s breath on her neck. She wouldn’t regret this move. She’d always taken what she’d wanted and she’d wanted him. Especially after walking out of the cave and seeing him standing naked under the water. She would have had to be a saint not to want to jump him. His muscles were impressive in clothes, but bare, she just wanted to lick him up and down.As she felt his breathing slow, she knew he was going to be pissed at her for maneuvering him so easily. She’d never seduced someone like that before and she felt liberated in doing so. Actually, she wanted to do it again, but doubted they had the time or could spare the energy. Her hands felt a few small scars on his back that she’d seen the other night when she’d been following him. Reaching down, she ran her hand over the larger one along the lower part of his spine.“How did you get this?” she asked as he held himself still."in prison?" she asked again.“Hmm. I should have been lookin
Alex pulled her back into the brush quickly and didn’t wait to see if they’d been spotted as they took off running back the way they’d come. When they’d made it twenty yards he chanced a glance over his shoulder and saw several heads bobbing in the trees, heading their way. Damn!He grabbed her arm and they made a sharp turn, cutting to the right down a path he knew was dangerous. He didn’t think they had any choice. He didn’t know if the men were the feds or other armed forces but he could tell they were looking for people like them. Hell, they could open fire on them through the bushes. All he knew was they couldn’t chance stopping and ask them what they wanted.“Sorry, Princess. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. He grabbed her and flung himself off the cliff, trying to take the brunt of the impact himself. The rains the night before helped their muddy journey down the slippery ravine. As they slid down the steep hill, Alex grunted every time his back connec
He estimated that they’d traveled a few miles. He didn’t notice anyone following them, but that could change. They needed to get away from the water and quickly. He looked over at Joanne. She was resting the back of her head on the grassy shore. Mud was caked into her hair and her clothes were soaked and muddy. Her eyes were closed as she leveled her breathing.“We have to get moving, Princess. The men might be right behind us.”She nodded and started to rise, her bag still on her shoulders. He reached over and took it from her. “Since I lost mine, I’ll carry the extra weight.” She smiled and nodded again. He wondered why she wasn’t talking and asked, “Is your throat okay?”She coughed a few times, then whispered. “I think I drank too much water and dirt. It will be fine, after I get a drink.”He stopped and allowed her to pull out her canteen of water. As she took a drink, he realized most of the food had been in his
